  • Possible Service Honors Activity with Disability Resource Center

    The Disability Resource Center is looking for an interested and committed Honors Student to work with a student who is blind in his Fall 2015 ECON 121: Principles of Macroeconomics course. The Honors Student would serve as the DRC student’s note taker and scribe throughout the fall semester.  A scribe assists with the visual and writing aspects of homework, in-class activities, and exams.  The DRC student will be responsible for training the scribe and informing what tasks are needed such as describing graphs, or writing down specific answers. 

    The responsibilities for this activity are as follows:

    -  Attend all classes as the student’s note taker and scribe for any in-class work that needs completion.

         o Class meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30-10:45 and Wednesdays from 1:00-1:50

    -  Meet with the student a couple of hours/week outside of class to help explain any notes and/or scribe homework assignments

    -  Scribe course exams with student throughout semester (2 midterms at 2.5 hours each and 1 final exam at 4 hours)

     

    The requirements for this activity are as follows:

    - Eligibility in the Honors College and approval of this activity by your Faculty Fellow

    - Familiarity with Macroeconomics – prefer someone who has taken ECON 121 before, especially with Professor William Rauscher

         o If you haven’t taken ECON 121 but will be in the future (including Fall 2015), you are not eligible for this activity.

  • Potential Honors Activity: Seeking Video Editor for Project Vida

    We are currently recruiting a student in the School of Art and Design with experience in video editing to work on a project creating video testominals addressing barriers to pre-exposure prophylaxis for HIV (PrEP).  Our team currently consists of three UIC medical students, one Medical School faculty member, and the staff at Project Vida, an HIV/AIDS education and direct services organization in Little Village. We have the expertise to recruit participants for the testimonials and guide testimonial content, but need to recruit a student interested in being primarily responsible for video editing. If desired, the student would be able to discuss receiving Honors Activity or Capstone credit with their Honors Advisor.  Interested students should contact Wesley Gibbert at wgibbe2@uic.edu.

  • Project: VISION Paid After-School Tutoring Position in Chinatown and Bridgeport

    Project: VISION is a small grassroots organization serving youth age 12-18 in Chicago's Chinatown & Bridgeport neighborhoods. We are seeking tutors for our After School Homework Tutoring Program.     Seeking After School Tutors

    Project: VISION (www.projectvisionchicago.org) is a small grassroots organization serving youth age 12-18 in Chicago's Chinatown & Bridgeport neighborhoods. We are seeking paid and volunteer tutors for our After School Homework Tutoring Program. Tutors will assist students in grades 6-12 with homework and provide enrichment activities to help students develop academic skills and knowledge. We are seeking tutors with strong personal academic records and enthusiasm and passion for teaching!

    Qualifications:

    -Must be at least college sophomore
    -Strong academic record (undergraduate GPA of at least 3.3/4.0) and confident in subjects including English, history, and higher math (i.e. algebra, geometry, advanced alegebra, pre-calculus), and sciences (i.e. biology, chemistry and physics).
    -Good communication skills
    -Reliable, punctual, self-motivated and able to work well with a team
    -PAID TUTORS must be available to work 10-20 hours/week (in minimum 3 hour blocks).
    -VOLUNTEER TUTORS must be available to work at least one 3 hour block per week. Shifts are available Mondays-Fridays 3-7pm and Saturdays 10a-1p. 
    -All tutors must be able to commit to working the entire academic year (through 6/15/15)
    -Experience working with youth in the 12-18 age group is preferred.

  • PSI CHI Seeking Tutors

    Psi Chi Tutoring is a volunteer tutoring service that takes place in BSB, Room 2048. It is designed as a walk-in service to serve all UIC students throughout the campus with one-on-one academic help for several psychology courses.     Alternative Spring Break at UIC is happy to announce that applications for Spring 2015 trips are now open! We organize alternative break tripswhere 7-10 groups of ~10 students engage in direct service for a week. Each trip has a focus on a particular social issue; Students educate themselves and each other, and then do hands-on work with relevant organizations.

  • Science Fair Judges Needed - 12/14

    The UIC WISE program has been asked to recruit science fair judges for the Upper Grade (6-8) Science Fair at Mark T. Skinner Fine Art & Technology School. They are looking for judges to evaluate the projects. If you or someone you know is able to come and help out, it will be appreciated. 

    Judges just need to have a willingness to help a young person make their science project better. UIC students, staff and faculty are all welcome to volunteer. There is a good number of volunteers already, but still a few more people are needed to help out. The science teacher will have an easy scoring rubric to follow.

    The Science Fair judging will take place on Monday, December 14th from 9:45 to 12:45 in the gym.

    Skinner is located near Whitney Young High School at 1260 W Adams St in Chicago.

    The Social Justice Initiative at UIC invites Honors College students to get actively involved in the FREEDOM DREAMS...FREEDOM NOW Conference that is coming up May 28-May 30 This is a three-day gathering in honor of the 50th anniversary of Freedom Summer '64 and will include activists, community leaders, students, scholars and artists and UIC faculty and students, and will feature a keynote address by Julian Bond (Co-Found of SNCC and first President of the Southern Poverty Law Center).     Student volunteers will help prepare for the conference, run it, attend sessions and be included in special pre-conference and post-conference events with the guests and participants.   • Swimable Seeking Leadership Team Members

    Swimable is an aquatics program powered by university students that serves children with special needs. Our model consists of three parts: our instructors, our swimmers, and their families. Swimable features specially trained students that conduct one-on-one swim lessons with children with special needs. Swimmers can enjoy customized swim classes led by instructors that interact well and understand swimmers individual needs. We also work to provide a space where families can network and learn about other community resources that could benefit them.

    Swimable was developed and launched at UIUC and now is expanding to UIC.

    Currently, we are seeking students who are interested in being on the leadership team for Swimable @ UIC. There are a variety of roles, like public engagement, special events, and social media. Also, we are not major exclusive, we just want people who are passionate for our cause!

    Since 1995, Toys for Tots has helped spread cheer during the holiday season through the generosity of donors. The UIC community is joining this effort by collecting toys for excited Cook County children. Please consider donating this year and brightening the life of a young child.

    New and unwrapped toys for children ages 0-13 can be dropped off at any of the collection sites on East Campus. Toys that are used or contain weapons or food cannot be accepted.

  • Truman Scholarship for Careers in Public Service, Deadline 10/26

    Are you committed to public service?  Apply for the Truman and Public Service Scholarships!

    The Truman is a $30,000 scholarship for juniors who are committed to careers in public service at a leadership level. Students apply during their third year and if they win, the money is applied to graduate/professional school studies.  The Truman Foundation conceives of public service broadly. It could be activism, science research, community leadership, elected office, government employment, education, policy, urban issues -the list goes on.

  • Tutor at the AAAN Learning Center, Bio and Chem Tutors especially needed!

    AAAN is looking for tutors in:

    - Mathematics
    - Physics (Calculus and Algebra based)141, 142 & up
    - Accounting
    - Psychology

    - And any other subjects based on undergrad student requests

    Responsibilities:

    African American Academic Network tutors assist students with course work related to UIC academics through individual or group sessions. Under the supervision of the Learning Resource Center manager, tutors will perform the following duties:

    - Must be available for work Monday thru Friday according to the set and agreed schedule
    - Maintain accurate student file progress and information
    - Maintain and monitor Learning Resource Center activities at all times
    - Assist in maintaining a clean LRC environment
    - Tutor in two (2) or more courses
    - Answer and assist students and staff with questions related to course information
    - Monitor computer lab and ensure computers and printers are operating properly and correctly by students
    - Promote tutoring, and other services and events offered or sponsored by AAAN
    - Lead peer review groups or workshop sessions, writing follow-up reports on student progress
    - Attend meetings and LRC sponsored events
    - Computer skills are required

    Minimum Qualifications:

    All tutor applicants are required current enrollment of 6 credit hours minimum and a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher and have attended UIC at least 1 year (some grad students may qualify). Tutor candidates have the capability to effectively communicating with diverse entities of students who may have multiple learning needs or skills. All AAAN tutors are required to tutor in two (2) or more subjects/courses in which grades of “A” or “B” was earned. Once hired, tutors must work a minimum of 10 hours a week, and at least TWO DAYS in the week. Master’s candidates are welcome to apply.

  • Tutor at the UIC Cisar Student Veteran Center

    The Cisar Student Veteran Center (CSVC) is looking for tutors to help student veterans succeed in class.  The CSVC is a space for veterans to study and find fellowship with fellow students.  The CSVC is located at Student Center East, and is a great opportunity for ambitious and successful students to gain volunteer hours, strengthen a resume, and to engage in community service.  Specifically, the CSVC is in need of math and chemistry tutors, though all other areas of study are welcome.  They would prefer that prospective student tutors be available for a minimum of 1-2 hours a week at the CSVC.  Interested students may send a resume to uicstudentveteransaffairs@gmail.com.
