What Are We?
- A tutoring and mentoring campus organization. We focus on 8th graders attending Daniel J Corkery in Little Village. This year, we are also expanding to Spry located in Pilsen, so we need many more weekly tutors!
What Do We Do in SL?
- We act as tutors and mentors to junior high students: helping with homework, office skills, such as Microsoft or google drives, but also as role models. Students can ask about college life, academics, or anything else that comes to their minds.
Why?
- As many of you are aware, Chicago Public Schools often lack funding and many are in underdeveloped areas. As tutors and mentors, we aim to bridge the gap that often comes with shortage in funds.
How Often Do We Meet?
- We know you have busy schedules, so flexibility is a major part of this club. Tutoring happens three days a week, Tues - Thurs; you pick whichever day works best for you to go in and tutor. Also, one Saturday every quarter, so two times a semester, we have what's called a school improvement day which focuses on helping out the school- painting, clean ups, hanging up/taking down pap ers and posters, and we also play games with the kids. You can either come to tutoring or the school improvement day (or both!)
Time Commitment
- For weekly mentoring/tutoring, we ask our volunteers to allot time from 2:50-5pm, since it takes about 20 minutes to get to the school. Tutoring sessions run from 3:15-4:15 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The Saturday events typically run from 9am-12pm.
How Do We Get to the School?
- There is a Sprouting Leaders funded uber account that should only be used for transportation to and from UIC. Carpooling is another option. Members will be reimbursed for expenses such as gas, but they'd have to set it up with an eboard member prior to doing so.
We will be having a meeting this Thursday, Sept 14 at 4pm, location TBD. If you would like to attend or have any questions, please email m.gharib@sproutingleaders.org
