What CYP does?
Chicago Youth Programs is an award-winning agency created by concerned Chicago volunteers, empowering each child to achieve long-term positive outcomes. In keeping our promise to each child, CYP utilizes a holistic approach. This in turn, cultivates their capabilities and improves their health and life opportunities by delivering Chicago’s youth, ages newborn-25, nearly 40 programs that give: more education, more guidance, and more results.
Currently, CYP is serving 450 at-risk youth in three of Chicago’s low-income neighborhoods and is primarily staffed by over 500 volunteers. All programs are free and transportation is provided to ensure that those most in need of services are able to receive them.
Volunteering for CYP
Individuals do not need any special skills to become a volunteer. However, individuals must be willing to commit to the program for one hour each week for one school year. The desire to provide a student with a positive role model, patience, and understanding, dependability, flexibility and discretion are all important characteristics the successful volunteer possesses. Most importantly, before being matched one-to-one with a student, all volunteers must successfully complete the volunteer application process.
As a volunteer tutor, you may be asked to help a student in grade prek-9th grade with the following:
- Reading
- Math
- Spelling
- Writing
- Study Skills
- Organization Skills
- Develop positive attitudes about learning and school
