  • Future of Chicago Lecture Series

    The annual “Future of Chicago” lecture series brings civic leaders to examine issues with students and the community.

    Topics focus on the social, economic and political conditions of the Chicago metropolitan region. Former Chicago alderman Dick Simpson, professor of political science, moderates the series, hosted by the department of political science since 1976.

    The lectures are noon to 12:50 p.m. in Lecture Center C3.

    Come join HCAB for a fun night of crafts and volunteering! On November 2nd from 5-7 pm in the Honors College lounge, relax, mingle, and help make cards for Veterans! Veterans and individuals on active duty all deserve to know they are appreciated.   • Chicago Signature Honors: Capoeira Workshop with Mestre Calango, Thurs. 4/24 (RSVP required by 4/20)

    Due to the success of our Fall Semester workshop, United Capoeira Association-Chicago invites you again to experience the excitement of Capoeira.  Capoeira is an African Brazilian martial art that incorporates self-defense with dance, music and acrobatics.  It crosses many facets of personal expression, while developing a strong sense of community. Brazilian native and Capoeira Master, Mestre Calango, and Dr. Lindsay will lead a fun and exciting introductory class that will cover the basic movements, history and music. Be sure to wear comfortable clothes suitable for a full body workout. RSVP today!

  • Want to go abroad to study, research, or teach English after graduation? Fulbright Info Session, Thurs. 4/23

    Immediately after World War II in 1946, Congress created the Fulbright Program, to foster mutual understanding among nations through educational and cultural exchange. Students participate in English teaching or a self-designed program of study that can include research, university coursework, art projects, language study and more. The grants are available to over 150 countries, and generally provide round-trip transportation, language or orientation courses, maintenance for the academic year, and supplemental health and accident insurance. Applicants must be U.S. citizens who hold a BA or BS by the beginning of the grant period. The UIC deadline will be early in the Fall semester of 2015 for the 2016-17 year, so now is the perfect time for Juniors to start exploring the option!

  • Honors Capstone General Information Workshop, Mon. 2/3

    The Capstone Information Session Workshop provides an opportunity for you to learn more about the Capstone requirement, brainstorm possible topics or ideas for your Capstone, and talk with an Honors College Associate Dean or Postdoctoral Fellow about your Capstone.  This workshop is intended for everyone from Seniors starting on their Capstones now to freshman who want to learn more about the requirement to be prepared in the future.  

    The workshop will be held Monday, 2/3 from 3 - 4 pm in Burnham Hall 121 (Quiet Study Room).

    WHY: Because Art Institute is not everything, and just because you have been to MCA does not mean you have seen it all. There are all sorts of exciting art and art spaces around the city. Let's pay a visit to Bridgeport Art Center, hear about Project Onward, which supports artists with disabilities, and talk to the artists themselves about their work.

    Why: “Phenomenal dancer Sònia Sánchez channels the subconscious depth of flamenco, raw and unadorned, in Le Ça, her solo dance propelled by electric guitarist David Soler and vocalist Miguel Angel (“el Londro”). A magnetic presence with an extraordinary command of body and rhythm, Sánchez creates a flamenco language all her own with her prodigious music collaborators.” (MCA Website)

  • Faculty Fellow Relationship Workshop, Thurs. 3/10

    All first-year students will be assigned a Faculty Fellow by the summer after your freshman year.  Come to this interactive workshop to learn more about the role of a Faculty Fellow, tips for communicating and building a relationship with your Fellow, and other advice and strategies for building a strong relationship with your Fellow. This workshop is designed primarily for first-year students and students who are new to the Honors College, but any Honors College student is welcome to attend.

Since Battle took over the company in 2011, these are just a few of the choreographers Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater has presented during their annual residency on our historic stage.     Marcia Festen has more than 20 years of experience in the nonprofit sector. Currently, she serves as Director of the Arts Work Fund for Organizational Development, a funding collaborative which supports capacity building efforts for small arts and cultural organizations. She also has a consulting practice for nonprofits. She is co-author of Level Best: A Step-by-Step Guide to Evaluation for Grassroots Nonprofits (2004) and How Effective Nonprofits Work: A Guide for Donors, Board Members and Foundation Officers (2002). Her publications include: Leveraging New Funds to Support Human Rights Organizations (2001) and Community Panels for Youth—A Community Based Alternative to Juvenile Justice (2001).

    Esther Grimm’s lifelong career in the arts spans administration, museum education, arts education, and philanthropy. She is the executive director of 3Arts, a public grantmaking organization dedicated to supporting women artists, artists of color, and artists with disabilities working in the performing, teaching, and visual arts in Chicago. She authored six children’s non-fiction, art-activity books focusing on the art of ancient and living cultures.

    Lecture and Lunch with Congressman Mike Quigley, Wednesday 11/9

    Congressman Mike Quigley will be coming to UIC the day after the election.  Want to discuss current events, the election, or the future of Chicago with the Congressman?  Come to his lecture and/or lunch to engage in discussion!

    Congressman Quigley is the US Representative for Illinois’ 5th congressional district, which includes most of Chicago’s north side as well as several western suburbs.

    Topics focus on the social, economic and political conditions of the Chicago metropolitan region. Former Chicago alderman Dick Simpson, UIC professor of political science, moderates the series, hosted by the UIC department of political science since 1976.  Series co-sponsors are UIC Honors College and the UIC Institute for Policy and Civic Engagement.

    Don Bielinski has held CEO and President positions in 3 different industries, leading businesses ranging in size from start-up to the Fortune 500, and in locations including the US, Europe, Asia, and Australia.   His expertise lies in developing start-ups from within existing businesses, managing complex turnarounds/reorganizations, strategy development, and innovation.  In his 25-year career with W. W. Grainger, Inc. his roles included Group President, Division CEO, SVP Marketing & Sales as well as CFO. Post Grainger, Don has been CEO of Exostar, a technology service company in the Aerospace and Defense Industry and Chairman, Asia Pacific for the Hudson Highland Group, a $1.5B talent management and recruitment business.
