  • Paid Research Assistant Position with UIC Department of Pediatrics for recent graduates

    Department:  UIC Department of Pediatrics

    Position Title:  Research Assistant 

    Description: Applications are welcome for candidates interested in parent-child interactions and impact of enhancing parenting behaviors to promote early child development. Research assistants will deliver a brief parent-directed intervention to parents while they wait for their child to be seen by his/her pediatrician at the University of Illinois Outpatient Care Clinic (1801 W. Taylor). Other responsibilities include assisting with recruitment, ordering supplies and intervention materials, management of study data, conducting phone assessments, scoring data entry of assessments, and other project-related activities as requested. Research assistants will gain experience in: (a) practice-based research involving parent-child communication in pediatric settings and patient outcomes and (b) manuscript  writing.

    Requirements: Completion of undergraduate degree and a strong interest in early childhood development and/or pursuing an advanced degree from a  program in psychology, public health, social work or medicine. 

    Qualifications/Experience: Preferred experience working with parents and children ages 2-24 months

  • Undergraduate Research: Globaled 2 Project in the College of Education

    Undergraduate Research/Scientific Assistant Position: GlobalEd 2

    The GlobalEd 2 Project at the College of Education is seeking a part-time undergraduate research/scientific assistant to help with the development of curriculum materials and digital support tools for students over spring semester 2015, with the possibility of an extension to summer term.

    This is a 10 hour per week position with occasional additional hours up to 20 hours a week.

    Responsibilities for this position include:

    • Performing Internet research and finding resources on issues related to GlobalEd 2 topics (specifically global food availability and genetically modified foods).
    • Compiling and curating a database of web links, resources, and other tools to help students using the GlobalEd 2 curriculum.
    • Assisting with the development and deployment of official GlobalEd 2 curriculum materials via the web (e.g., worksheets, handbooks, websites, and other digital applications).
    • Data entry using Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, and other web-based forms.
    • Data management tasks, including scanning, photocopying, labeling, filing, and analysis of student work.
    • Other duties as needed.

    GlobalEd 2 is an online curriculum developed in collaboration with University of Connecticut. Within GlobalEd 2, middle school social studies classrooms in Connecticut and Chicago participate in an online negotiations simulation to discuss a socioscientific issue. Currently the issue in the GlobalEd 2 curriculum is global food availability and genetically modified foods. Each classroom represents a nation, and within each classroom/nation, there are smaller committees focusing on environment, economy, human rights, and health issues. The nations and committees research their situation, then engage in online discussions (message boards and live "chats") with the goal of reaching international agreement on some solutions to food issues. The goal of the project is to increase students' science literacy and interest in science by situating science in a real-world scenario and a technology rich environment.

    This position is ideal for an undergraduate in education or social sciences who is interested in classroom-based research and has or wants some experience with office/research lab work. This position is also focused on web research, so it is suitable for anyone who enjoys “hunting” for items on the web and curating the best items.

    Strong attention to detail and proficiency in basic Microsoft Office and Google Apps software are required. Also, any technology experience with programming, WordPress, or other content management platforms is preferable.

  • Part-Time Paid and Volunteer Tutoring Positions with Project VISION

    Project: VISION (www.projectvisionchicago.org) is a small grassroots organization serving youth age 12-18 in Chicago's Chinatown & Bridgeport neighborhoods. They are seeking both volunteer and compensated tutors for their After School Homework Tutoring Program. Tutors will assist students in grades 6-12 with homework and provide enrichment activities to help students develop academic skills and knowledge base in a variety of subjects. Each tutor will work with 4-5 students each afternoon and assist the Program Coordinator with maintaining student records. They are seeking tutors with strong personal academic records and enthusiasm and passion for teaching!

     

    Responsibilities:

    -Work under Youth Program Coordinator

    -Tutor students (grades 6-12) in various subject areas in after school homework tutoring program (answer students' questions, explain concepts, check work, help study for tests, etc.).

    -Provide enrichment activities to students.

    -Help maintain student records, attendance records, progress reports, and parent updates.

    -Volunteers must be able to commit at least 3 hours/week, and compensated tutors can work 10-20 hours per week. Shifts are available Mondays-Fridays 3-7pm and Saturdays 10a-1p.

    -Must be able to commit to working at least through the end of the academic school year (6/21/16)

     

    Qualifications:

    -Must have a strong academic record and be confident with a variety of subjects through the high school levels

    -Must be especially strong in upper level math (i.e. geometry, algebra II, trigonometry, pre-calculus/calculus) and science (chemistry, physics) subjects

    -Experience working with youth in 12-18 age group preferred.

    -Organized, reliable, punctual, self-motivated and team player

    -Excellent communication skills

    Compensate Tutor Rate: $10/hour

  • Teaching Fellows Program (TA Opportunity)

    The Teaching Fellow program is designed to provide teaching and research experience to “gap year” students who are in between graduating with a B.A. and B.S. and applying for graduate study in psychology. Teaching Fellows are expected serve as teaching assistants at the equivalent of up to a 75% graduate student load, and to work on research under the mentorship of a faculty member and nominator. Given present needs of TAs outside of the department, we estimate we could handle up to 5 Teaching Fellows any given year. The term of employment will be one-year, with the possibility of an extension to two years. 

    This is an open call for nominations of possible Teaching Fellows by June 1. Candidates can be recent UIC graduates, or recent graduates from other universities.

    The nomination should be sent to Linda Skitka at lskitka@uic.edu and should include the following information:

    Three letters of recommendation, one of which may be from the faculty nominateA cover letter from the nominee that includes a statement of qualifications, experience (if any), research interests, long term career plans, and courses that the student feels most prepared to TAA copy of transcripts

  • Fulbright Student Awards

    Interested in teaching English or conducting research overseas for a year after you graduate?  A strong Fulbright application requires a great deal of thinking, planning and writing. Summer is the perfect time to begin to prepare for the September deadline! 

    What is the Fulbright?

    • Immediately after World War II, Congress created the Fulbright Program to foster mutual understanding among nations through educational and cultural exchange.
    • The U.S. Student Program awards approximately 1,800 grants annually and sends students to over 155 countries worldwide.
    • Students participate in a self-designed program of study that can include research, university coursework, language study and more. Alternatively, students can also choose to assist in teaching English in one of over 70 countries, at various levels.
    • Candidates must have US citizenship at time of application and a bachelor's degree before starting their service period. Bachelor’s holders are eligible to apply at any point in life after graduation. 

    Fulbright Full Grant vs. Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship (ETA)

    • Full Grant: requires a proposal of study or research that would take 10-12 months to perform. Some countries require knowledge of the language, others are flexible. Programs of study can include classes, research projects, library work, observations, training in the creative arts, surveys, lab work - in short, anything that would help a student study or learn more about the proposed topic.
    • ETA: offers students the chance to apply to teach English.  In some countries ETAs teach in a high school, in others elementary and in others at the college level. Language requirements vary from country to country, and many countries have no requirement. ETAs are generally students who have some teaching experience and believe that the ETA experience will help to prepare them for what they are doing in the future.

    What are the benefits?

    • These grants generally provide round-trip transportation, language or orientation courses, maintenance for the academic year (based on living costs in the host country), and supplemental health and accident insurance.
    • The Fulbright name is well respected in the U.S. and beyond. Past scholars have considered it an experience of a lifetime. They learn about new cultures or deepen their knowledge of one they already were acquainted with. They make new friends and engage in an in-depth teaching or learning experience that gives them depth of knowledge and skills in their chosen field, and helps set the stage for greater independence in their next career move. They develop a more sophisticated understanding of their host country, the U.S. and themselves.

    The Client Services Office (CSO) is part of the UIC Academic Computing and Communications Center. The CSO handles new student hiring, basic training and supervision, and is located in 2267 SELE. New student employees can work as: lab monitors in any one of the ACCC computer labs located on campus, helpdesk consultants, or  MicroRepair technicians.

    All ACCC student employees support the faculty, staff, and student use of ACCC computing services in whatever role or location they are scheduled in. Consider the diverse range of services: ACCC computer labs, U-Print printing services, Blackboard, UIC wireless networking, WebStore software sales, netID and common password service support and email. The students working our MicroRepair positions support lab hardware and provide service calls to faculty/staff.

    Specifically, student employees are hired by the CSO or MicroRepair for the following:

    Lab Monitors

    To work as lab monitors in ACCC public computer labs, assisting with basic account and access issues, software use, printing services, general network connectivity issues and enforcement of the Acceptable Use Policy. As lab monitors, employees maintain the lab environment and are the first to troubleshoot, fix and/or report problems with lab equipment. Lab monitors also assist users with special accessibility needs.

    Helpdesk Consultants

    To work as helpdesk consultants at the Client Services Office, the primary helpdesk and point of contact for ACCC services. Support is provided in-person, via email, and phone.

    MicroRepair Technicians

    Micro Repair (PC Support) technicians are responsible for troubleshooting and repairing public/teaching computer lab assets as well as providing On-Site Helpdesk support for UIC Faculty and staff.     The Undergraduate Success Center (USC) is an advising center located in Stevenson Hall 111 and offers holistic advising to students from all majors and colleges.  The center serves as a “one-stop” referral resource for students who need help or who need access to resources. The USC is seeking a student assistant to begin working in Fall 2014.

    Responsibilities:

    •          Work the front desk, schedule student appointments and assist with student intake
    •          Engaging students and helping them navigate campus and university procedures as needed
    •          Check-in all students and works with the advisors for follow-up
    •          Maintains office calendar, and assists with all office events and programs
    •          Be familiar with Microsoft Publisher, Excel, and Google Drive
    •          Responsible for office cleanliness and upkeep
    •          Work with other student workers throughout the week
    •          Be friendly,  personable and remain professional at all times
    •          Must be well spoken, patient, and organized.
    •          The hired student assistant must attend two training sessions upon decision.

    Qualifications: Previous office support and/or customer service experience on or off-campus is preferred. Candidates must be a full-time student at the University of Illinois at Chicago and have the ability to communicate clearly. Federal Work Study is strongly preferred and all majors are welcomed!

    We are looking for Neuroscience/pre-med undergraduate (freshman/sophomore) research assistants who are interested in stem cell research for the treatment of neurodegenerative disease, stroke and Alzheimer's disease in particular. Our research lab is in the College of Medicine Research Building in the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology. The successful applicant will work closely with a graduate student on a research project that involves animal modeling, immunohistochemistry, and microscopy work. The applicant will commit to work-study during the school year, and devote at least 20 hours/week. Priority is given to Biology/Chemistry majors with high GPAs. Great experience for those who plan to go to Medical/Graduate school. Qualifications and requirements: work-study funds, prior research experience is preferred but not necessary. The applicant should be able to quickly learn and master new techniques, have good communication skills, as well as be mature, reliable, and organized.     Position Description

    Rush Medical College is looking for Proctors to assist on an as needed basis with administering a variety of computerized assessments to students enrolled in medical school.  Please Note: This is a part-time, contractor position.  The number of Proctors used varies over the course of the academic year depending upon the number of assessment events and event specifications.  Being hired as a Proctor does not guarantee that you will be used for all of the assessment events.

    Proctors are expected to communicate with students and other assessment personnel in a professional manner and demonstrate the highest ethical standards in protecting the confidentiality and integrity of all exams.  Proctors will act in accordance with medical school policies and procedures.  The exams administered at the medical school are high stakes and security is of the utmost concern.  Therefore, proctors will need to be concerned about security and confidentiality at all times.
