    Have the experience of a lifetime with fellow UIC students this spring break!

    $150 will cover lodging, transportation, and food for a whole week. If you're interested in making great memories and participating in direct service for poverty, homelessness, health, environmental or another social justice issues this spring break, please read on!

    Alternative Spring Break at UIC is happy to announce that applications for Spring 2015 trips are now open! We organize alternative break tripswhere 7-10 groups of ~10 students engage in direct service for a week. Each trip has a focus on a particular social issue; Students educate themselves and each other, and then do hands-on work with relevant organizations.

    Become a volunteer English as a Second Language tutor at Aquinas Literacy Center! Volunteer tutors are needed to instruct limited English proficient adult learners for 90 minutes per week at our Center, located at 3540 S Hermitage.

    All instruction is one-on-one and training is provided. Knowledge of a second language is not required; all instruction is in English.

    Join us for our two-part tutor training: Friday, May 2 (6pm - 9pm) and Saturday, May 3 (9am to 3pm). Tutors must attend both days for certification.

    Seeking After School Tutors

    Project: VISION (www.projectvisionchicago.org) is a small grassroots organization serving youth age 12-18 in Chicago's Chinatown & Bridgeport neighborhoods. We are seeking paid and volunteer tutors for our After School Homework Tutoring Program. Tutors will assist students in grades 6-12 with homework and provide enrichment activities to help students develop academic skills and knowledge. Each tutor will work with 4-5 students each afternoon and assist the Program Coordinator with maintaining student records. We are seeking tutors with strong personal academic records and enthusiasm and passion for teaching!

    Qualifications:

    -Must be at least college sophomore
    -Strong academic record (undergraduate GPA of at least 3.3/4.0) and confident in subjects including English, history, and higher math (i.e. algebra, geometry, advanced alegebra, pre-calculus), and sciences (i.e. biology, chemistry and physics).
    -Good communication skills
    -Reliable, punctual, self-motivated and able to work well with a team
    -PAID TUTORS must be available to work 10-20 hours/week (in minimum 3 hour blocks).
    -VOLUNTEER TUTORS must be available to work at least one 3 hour block per week. Shifts are available Mondays-Fridays 3-7pm and Saturdays 10a-1p. 
    -All tutors must be able to commit to working the entire academic year (through 6/15/15)
    -Experience working with youth in the 12-18 age group is preferred.

    AAAN is looking for tutors in:

    - Mathematics
    - Physics (Calculus and Algebra based)141, 142 & up
    - Accounting
    - Psychology

    - And any other subjects based on undergrad student requests

    Responsibilities:

    African American Academic Network tutors assist students with course work related to UIC academics through individual or group sessions. Under the supervision of the Learning Resource Center manager, tutors will perform the following duties:

    - Must be available for work Monday thru Friday according to the set and agreed schedule
    - Maintain accurate student file progress and information
    - Maintain and monitor Learning Resource Center activities at all times
    - Assist in maintaining a clean LRC environment
    - Tutor in two (2) or more courses
    - Answer and assist students and staff with questions related to course information
    - Monitor computer lab and ensure computers and printers are operating properly and correctly by students
    - Promote tutoring, and other services and events offered or sponsored by AAAN
    - Lead peer review groups or workshop sessions, writing follow-up reports on student progress
    - Attend meetings and LRC sponsored events
    - Computer skills are required

    Minimum Qualifications:

    All tutor applicants are required current enrollment of 6 credit hours minimum and a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher and have attended UIC at least 1 year (some grad students may qualify). Tutor candidates have the capability to effectively communicating with diverse entities of students who may have multiple learning needs or skills. All AAAN tutors are required to tutor in two (2) or more subjects/courses in which grades of “A” or “B” was earned. Once hired, tutors must work a minimum of 10 hours a week, and at least TWO DAYS in the week. Master’s candidates are welcome to apply.

    WHAT: Two hours per week dedicated to tutoring and goal-setting with an at-risk student from a low-income family.

  • Volunteer for the Windy City National Qualified Volleyball Tournament, 3/25 – 3/27

    The second annual adidas Windy City National Qualifier volleyball tournament will take place at McCormick Place Convention Center, March 25 – 27, 2016. Over 800 teams will participate in this event, and we’re in need of volunteer assistance to ensure it’s an overwhelming success!

    Important Information:

    The minimum age for a volunteer is 18 years old. Volunteers MUST commit to work a minimum of TWO SHIFTS during the event. All volunteers receive two adidas staff t-shirts for the entire weekend. If volunteers are working multiple days, volunteers should plan to wear one of the shirts on each day. It is preferred that volunteers wear tan or black shorts and gym shoes. Please note that while the Volunteer Coordinator makes every effort to match you with your position preferences, volunteer positions are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. Volunteer Coordinator will sign off any volunteer service hours once shifts are completed if needed. Volunteers must sign a Release of Liability Waiver provided by WCNQ staff.

  • Possible Service Honors Activity with Disability Resource Center

    The Disability Resource Center is looking for an interested and committed Honors Student to work with a student who is blind in his Fall 2015 ECON 121: Principles of Macroeconomics course. The Honors Student would serve as the DRC student’s note taker and scribe throughout the fall semester.  A scribe assists with the visual and writing aspects of homework, in-class activities, and exams.  The DRC student will be responsible for training the scribe and informing what tasks are needed such as describing graphs, or writing down specific answers. 

    The responsibilities for this activity are as follows:

    -  Attend all classes as the student’s note taker and scribe for any in-class work that needs completion.

         o Class meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30-10:45 and Wednesdays from 1:00-1:50

    -  Meet with the student a couple of hours/week outside of class to help explain any notes and/or scribe homework assignments

    -  Scribe course exams with student throughout semester (2 midterms at 2.5 hours each and 1 final exam at 4 hours)

     

    The requirements for this activity are as follows:

    - Eligibility in the Honors College and approval of this activity by your Faculty Fellow

    - Familiarity with Macroeconomics – prefer someone who has taken ECON 121 before, especially with Professor William Rauscher

         o If you haven’t taken ECON 121 but will be in the future (including Fall 2015), you are not eligible for this activity.

  • Volunteer Opportunity: UIC Engage

  • One-time volunteer opportunity: STEM event for middle school girls, Sat. 3/22 (Registration required)

    Are you interested in helping inspire and empower middle school girls to pursue science and math careers? Expanding Your Horizons - Chicago could use your help! We are looking for volunteers to help out at the second Expanding Your Horizons - Chicago conference on Saturday, March 22nd at the University of Chicago in Hyde Park. We will need volunteers from approximately 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., but not all volunteer jobs have to last all day.  Example positions include helping with registration, setting up and assisting workshop leaders, ushering participants between locations, distributing lunch, and cleaning up facilities.  There will be a reception with food and refreshments for volunteers at the end of the day.  

    Chicago Expanding Your Horizons is a one-day conference where 200 middle school girls participate in hands-on science, technology, engineering, and math workshops. It is an exciting event for both the girls and volunteers, and we hope you will help us make this year’s conference a success! More information about the conference can be found on our website at https://sites.google.com/site/eyhchicago/.

    Volunteers will be expected to attend a mandatory orientation session the week before the conference at the University of Chicago campus.  The dates for training this year are March 15, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. or March 19, 2014 at 6:00 p.m.  We are trying to recruit around 50 volunteers to help the conference day run smoothly.   Are you interested?     Be a Part of an Awesome Reading Program!    Little Village READS is a new literacy initiative that pairs reading tutors with 1st through 3rd grade  students in the Little Village Community. All our students have been referred by their teachers for extra help outside the classroom, and they meet with tutors two days a week to work on building their reading skills. Tutors engage students in free reading, interactive games, and fun literacy activities.

  • Swimable Seeking Leadership Team Members

    Swimable is an aquatics program powered by university students that serves children with special needs. Our model consists of three parts: our instructors, our swimmers, and their families. Swimable features specially trained students that conduct one-on-one swim lessons with children with special needs. Swimmers can enjoy customized swim classes led by instructors that interact well and understand swimmers individual needs. We also work to provide a space where families can network and learn about other community resources that could benefit them.

    Swimable was developed and launched at UIUC and now is expanding to UIC.

    Currently, we are seeking students who are interested in being on the leadership team for Swimable @ UIC. There are a variety of roles, like public engagement, special events, and social media. Also, we are not major exclusive, we just want people who are passionate for our cause!

    Honors College Tutoring – Tutors schedule 3 hours per week in the Honors College Tutoring Center providing tutoring services to other UIC students.  Tutors must meet the following:

    o   Must be able to tutor in at least 3 different courses

    Student Leadership Development and Volunteer Services and Campus Programs are looking for mentors to join for the 2015 Fall Semester IGNITE Leadership Experience. IGNITE is a semester-long exploratory leadership program designed to help first- and second-year undergraduate students gain leadership capacities and get involved in UIC. As engaged leaders, IGNITE mentors will help guide the leadership explorations of first- and second-year UIC students. The ideal mentor will have some leadership experience and, most importantly, be committed to engaging with leadership on a personal, academic, and professional level. IGNITE mentors will gain confidence in their interpersonal, facilitative, and advising skills—all critical areas of need for graduate school and the workforce! Requirements: 

    Must be a UIC junior or senior undergraduate student. Must commit to attend every IGNITE session on Tuesday nights from 3:45-6pmstarting September 22 and ending November 24.Unfortunately, due to the nature of our program, if you have a class/work/personal conflict that overlaps with our program schedule, you are not eligible to apply for the program. Please consider applying next year! Mentors must attend Catalyst LeaderShape on Saturday, September 19from 9am-5pm. We are seeking involved students with a passion for helping other students find their place at UIC.

    The Department of Biological Sciences is seeking students who have excelled in Biology courses to volunteer as tutors for a few specific courses.  Courses for which they are seeking tutors include:

    The Arts of Life (http://artsoflife.org/) is a Chicago organization comprised of two professional arts studios working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.  They have an ongoing need for volunteers and (un-paid) interns.  This is a wonderful opportunity for students of all academic backgrounds to participate in volunteer activities benefiting the disabled populations in Chicago.
