  • Honors College-sponsored Study Abroad in Chiapas, Mexico

Cultures and Histories in San Cristobal, Chiapas, Mexico

    June 7 – June 30, 2017

The Honors College and LALS program are jointly sponsoring a summer study abroad program with our own Honors College Faculty Fellow Joel Palka. This program will give students an opportunity to learn about Chiapas from the Colonial Period to the present, as well as acquire knowledge regarding indigenous cultures in Mexico – for example – Mayan indigenous medicine. Students will have unique opportunity to conduct independent study project under supervision of UIC Professor Joel Palka.  This opportunity could be used as the foundation for an Honors Capstone project.

See the attached flier for more information.  For Honors College students, the cost will be reduced to $3050, $900 less than the flyer says. There are also other scholarships that students can apply for to help defray the costs. Anyone interested should contact the Study Abroad office and attend a Study Abroad First Steps Session ASAP because space is limited.

If you have questions about the program, contact Irina Krymova at krymova@uic.edu at the Study Abroad Office, Professor Joel Palka at jpalka@uic.edu, or Honors College Associate Dean Sloan Williams atsloanw@uic.edu .

Will you be involved in community service or leadership activities on- or off-campus this year?  Do you have a novel idea for an innovative engagement project that will positively impact others?  Apply for an Honors College Student Engagement Grant to help you on your way.
Through the generosity of donors, the UIC Honors College is able to offer financial awards to encourage enriching educational experiences that complement students' academic experience.  Grants will typically be $500 or less, but students may request a higher amount when a suitable and compelling rationale is provided.  Costs that may qualify for support might include (but are not limited to): supplies for engaged activities and projects, registration fees and travel for leadership conferences, costs associated with volunteer work, costs associated with the design construction and implementation of technology aimed at solving societal problems, materials for a meaningful event, or start-up funds for a new service-oriented student organization.
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis until the year's allotment of funding is depleted.  So the earlier you apply, the better your chances of being funded.  A link to the application can be found below:
Feel free to contact any Honors College staff member if you have any questions.

  • Honors Summer Housing Scholarship Due Mon. 5/5

We are pleased to announce that the Honors College is able to offer a limited number of Honors Summer Housing Scholarships on a competitive basis. These housing scholarships will cover the cost of a double room in either TBH or MRH (apartment-style housing on the South Campus) for the period of the eight-week summer session (June 16-August 8, 2014). There are no regular dining services during the summer, so the housing scholarship recipients will need to provide for their own meals. In order to qualify, applicants must be engaged in either a UIC summer course(s) or faculty-supervised research on our campus.

To apply, please write a personal statement of up to 1 page (double spaced) in which you explain what you will be doing during the period of the 8-week summer session and its relevance for your academic or pre-professional goals. Please also attach supporting documentation. (For example, if you are taking a class, attach a copy of your enrollment verification. If you are doing faculty supervised research, attach the email or other agreement that verifies the arrangement (this could be an email already exchanged, or a short email for this specific purpose).) Feel free to include in your statement any additional personal or financial information that might be relevant to the Honors College when selecting those most deserving of a summer housing scholarship.

Hurry: applications are due immediately! Email the application to Associate Dean Sara Hall at sahall@uic.edu by 8 am on Monday, May 5th. Use the subject line: SUMMER HOUSING SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION.

This scholarship only covers housing and does NOT cover the cost of food, or tuition for enrollment in a course, or transportation to research sites, or research supplies, etc.

Students receiving this scholarship will be expected to give back to the community of the Honors College and UIC Summer College by helping welcome students and prepare welcoming materials on select dates in July and early August, barring conflicts with class and research schedules.

  • Interim Dean of the Honors College Announced

    OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT:

    Dear Faculty, Staff and Students,

I am pleased to announce that Professor Ralph Keen will become Interim Dean of the Honors College, effective August 16, 2015, subject to approval by the University of Illinois Board of Trustees. Dr. Keen is currently Professor in the Department of History and he has held the prestigious title of Arthur J. Schmitt Chair of Catholic Studies since arriving at UIC in 2010. This appointment follows the decision of the current dean, Professor Bette L. Bottoms, to return to the faculty after an illustrious six years as dean and one year as interim dean. A search for a permanent dean will commence this coming academic year.

The Honors College is a national model for honors education in urban public research universities. Professor Keen has been involved with the college since his arrival at UIC, as a fellow and as a member of the Honors Council, of which he was co-chair in 2014-15. As a member of the college strategic planning committee (2011-12) and diversity committee (2013-14), and as co-chair of the 2013-14 fifth-year review of the dean, Professor Keen became familiar with every aspect of the college’s operations.

Prior to UIC, Professor Keen was Assistant and then Associate Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Iowa, where he was also involved in the University Honors Program. A renowned historian of early-modern religious thought, Professor Keen served as executive officer of UIC’s Religious Studies program in 2014-15. He is the author of two monographs and a textbook as well as editor or translator of five other books, and he is currently completing a monograph on the uses of the idea of divine wrath in religious polemics from Martin Luther to Jonathan Edwards. He is an editor of the monograph series Catholic Christendom 1300-1700 published in the UK by Ashgate, and serves on the boards of the American Catholic Historical Association and the Society for Reformation Research as well as the finance committee (of which he was the founding chair) of the American Society of Church History.

Please join me in welcoming Professor Keen to his new role on campus.

    Sincerely,

Eric A. Gislason Interim Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Provost
