    The Womenetics Advancing Aspirations Global Scholarship (AAGS)<https://www.womenetics.com/Events/Scholarships> is a $15,000 essay competition that engages young people in pressing women's issues and connects students with thought leaders in impactful roles. The competition, sponsored by Discover, is open to all undergraduates and requires entrants to write a 2,500 word essay on one of five prompts related to business issues affecting women. Five finalists will be chosen, and of these finalists, one grand prize winner will receive $5,000 and four runners-up will receive $2,500. The five finalists will be invited to attend, expenses paid, the 2015 Womenetics Global Women's Initiative in Chicago, where the winner will be announced. Deadline for entries is August 23, 2015.     Womenetics and Discover Financial Services are offering five undergraduates a total of $15,000 through the Advancing Aspirations Global Scholarship (AAGS)<https://www.womenetics.com/Events/Scholarships>. With this award-winning<http://www.prdaily.com/awards/specialedition/278.aspx> essay competition, Womenetics and Discover encourage students to research and become aware of global issues that affect women in business.

    In addition to the prize money, the five finalists will be invited on an expense-paid trip to share their insights at the 2015 Global Women's Initiative - where the grand prize winner will be announced - in Chicago on Nov. 13. At the conference, finalists will attend the VIP reception, participate in a panel discussion about their research and personal ambition, and connect with thought leaders in impactful roles.     The 2015 Global Women's Initiative will convene international thought leaders to explore Confidence is Key: Solutions for Building the Bench. Discussions will examine how attention by employers to the intersection between professional and personal realities is essential for companies to fully leverage diverse talent and for women in business to successfully grow and lead.

  • Volunteer Opportunity | USA Track & Field Illinois - 2016 Masters Throws Championships

    USA Track & Field Illinois is seeking volunteers for the 2016 Masters Throws Championships to be held August 6-7, 2016 at Benedictine University in Lisle, IL. The event consists of unique field event competitions that showcase an athlete’s ultimate power and strength! Volunteers receive a free t-shirt, complimentary parking, lunch on Saturday and Sunday and a ticket to Saturday's banquet if they volunteer on both Saturday and Sunday! There are several shifts available from August 5-7 and assistance needed with competition and administrative support.

    This is a great way to participate in the research community at UIC and to learn about other students' capstones and see how a presentation is done before your own Capstone year! Volunteering could count as a UIC Experience or Honors College Experience (or other engagement checklist) activity, so speak to your advisor or Dean Hall if you are seeking approval.

  • Up to Us Net Impact Challenge Team Members Needed

    Up to Us is a national campus competition that educates students about the national debt and specifically student debt. It seeks to empower students to make more of their time on campus and to learn about what debt means for America's future. The Clinton Foundation, Net Impact and the Peter G Peterson Foundation sponsor the campaign. In the fall semester, we will be hosting a social media campaign around My 2 Cents Day to get students motivated and interested in learning about their part in the economic future of America. In the spring semester, we will be hosting a longer campaign with more events delving into what types of debt are faced by different Americans and how we are all affected by debt. If the campaign is successful, our team from UIC will be recognized at the Clinton Global Initiative University meeting in San Francisco, CA!

  • University Library extended hours begin April 26

    The Richard J. Daley Library (801 S. Morgan) and the Library of the Health Sciences-Chicago (1750 W. Polk) will be open extended hours for the end of spring semester and finals week beginning Sunday, April 26.

    The Daley Library will be open continuously from 10 a.m., Sunday, April 26, through 7 p.m., Friday, May 8.  Only patrons with valid i-cards will be able to enter the building from 9 p.m. to 6:30 a.m.

    LHS-Chicago's extended hours will be between Sunday, April 26 - Thursday, May 7: Sundays, 9 a.m. ­ 2 a.m. Mondays - Thursdays, 7 a.m. 2 a.m. Friday, 7 a.m. - midnight Only UIC students, faculty, and staff will be admitted after 7 p.m.

  • UndocuScholars Project: Seeking Feedback from Undocumented Students

    Carola Suárez-Orozco and Robert Teranishi, professors at the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies at UCLA, are the Principal Investigators of the UndocuScholars Project. They seek to identify both barriers and opportunities that diverse undocumented college students experience on college campuses so that programs can be designed to provide better supports. They would like to hear from students about their experiences in order to understand how undocumented status is related to feeling connected to college as well as academic success and wellbeing.

    To participate in this project, you would complete an online survey about your experiences in college. In order to qualify you must be between the ages of 18 and 30 and identify as an undocumented, DREAMer, or DACAmented college student. 

    Participation in this research is completely confidential. They do not ask you to provide your name or any identifying information. Participation in this research is completely voluntary. You can refuse to answer any questions or end your involvement in the research at any time.

    Because they will not be collecting any identifiable information, there are no risks, beyond those in ordinary everyday life, in taking part in this project. Approximately 1,000 students will be in this research project. There are also no direct benefits to you participating in this research project; however, your participation may help the researchers learn more about the experience of UndocuScholars and help to inform educational policy and reform.

    You will be compensated with a $20 Reward for your time at the end of the completed survey.

    USG is the official governing body of undergraduate students at the University of Illinois at Chicago. USG represents undergraduates in many ways, including, but not limited to: improving policies that affect the welfare of the students; providing services to meet student needs; strengthening the sense of community among students, and serving as a communication medium between students and administration.

    USG consists of a President, Vice President, Speaker of the Assembly, Secretary, and 30 General Assembly Members. We also have five standing committees that focus on various projects and tasks throughout the academic year, they are as follows:

    University Relations Committee (URC): URC is concerned with adequately representing the interests of students to campus administrators, the Board of Trustees and the Illinois State Legislature. Efforts include increasing student involvement in university business and in maintaining necessary student services, while advocating to provide a better possibility to achieve higher education.

    Sustainability and Infrastructure Committee (SIC): SIC is concerned with all matters pertaining to campus facilities including sustainability, campus safety, technology, buildings and maintenance.

    Interpersonal Relations Committee (IRC): IRC is concerned with matters pertaining to local community organizations, upholding the UIC Urban Mission, working with the campus cultural centers, and working directly with Campus Programs to serve as a liaison between USG and the student organizations.

    Treasury Committee (TC): This committee oversees and advises the Legislative Assembly on matters pertaining to the allocation of funds requested by student organizations and allocation of funds appropriated to USG.

    Communications and Recruitment Committee (CRC): CRC oversees communications between the assembly and the student body. CRC is also in charge of all general USG publicity and promotions, as well as membership recruitment.

    Individuals who join our assembly benefit by being able to enhance their leadership and professionalism skills. Additionally, they will have the opportunity to work with school administrators on a variety of campus issues.

    Our general assembly meeting is on every Monday at 3:00pm in the Commuter Student Resource Center at Student Center East.   • UIC Summer Institute on Sustainability and Energy (SISE) Summer Program, Apply by 7/1

    What is SISE?

    The Summer Institute on Sustainability and Energy (SISE) is a two-week intensive workshop and lecture series for students and professionals interested in the title subjects: sustainability and energy. From August 6-20, a diverse body of participants will converge on the UIC campus and immerse itself in a broad spectrum of topics in energy and sustainable energy through daily presentations & panel discussions, collaborative research projects and mentoring, site tours of leading energy facilities in Chicago, and networking opportunities with energy & entrepreneurial leaders. The issues presented will be of interest to scientists, economists, political scientists, urban planners, engineers, architects, and entrepreneurs. This experience leaves graduates of the SISE program with a firm foundation for future careers in sustainability and energy, and inspires them to lead the next generation as thoughtful and informed global citizens.

    SISE is now accepting applications.

    Admission into the program is highly competitive. Only 50 participants will be accepted from a pool of national applicants. Applicants accepted into the program can expect to receive receive lodging support for the duration of the 2-week program and some meals on weekdays. Many will receive partial support for travel costs. Senior-level undergraduates (as of the fall of 2014), graduate students, and professionals working in the fields of sustainability and energy who are living, working, or studying in the United States are eligible to apply. An online application form, a resume, and three letters of reference are required. Applications will be accepted through July 1, 2014. More information is provided on the SISE website.

  • UIC’s RISE Act Application Workshops (Information now available for January and February dates)

  • UIC Orchestra Seeking Cellists and String Players, Come to an Open Rehearsal on Mon. 1/26 or Wed. 1/28

    The UIC Orchestra has an exciting semester planned and is looking for cellists and all string players to join the ensemble. The orchestra will perform three concerts:

    February 27
    Concert No. 1 will be a collaboration with the UIC Choirs.

    Concert No. 2. Greetings from Vienna will feature music by Mozart, Haydn, Brahms and Franz Schreker. Schreker's work is not well-known due to the fact that he was persecuted by the Nazi regime in Austria. His Intermezzo for strings is a true masterpiece and we are pleased to include it on this concert.

    Concert No. 3 Thick mists hid...A few shattered pines will be a collaboration with the UIC Bands and will feature Finlandia by Jean Sibelius to celebrate his 150th Birthday.

    The UIC Orchestra is open to all UIC students who have playing experience. We have a large need for cellists this semester, but all string players are invited to join the ensemble. This is a 1 credit hour course (MUS 157: String Ensemble; CRN: 26926). Grading is done strictly on attendance. There is no audition necessary for the Spring Semester. The UIC Orchestra will hold open rehearsals for Honors College students Monday January 26th, and Wednesday January 28th. Those interested in the orchestra are welcome to bring their instruments and sit in during rehearsal on those dates.   • UIC Green Fee Request for Proposals, Initial Deadline Fri. 2/21

    The Green Fee Advisory Board (GFAB) is currently accepting student proposals for Spring 2014. Approximately $30,000 is available to support proposals that help to establish a sustainable campus environment by expanding such areas as composting, landscaping, and transportation initiatives while also reducing waste and conserving resources.  Funding proposals must address the three pillars of sustainability - environmental protection, social equity, and economic benefit - and align with the goals of the UIC Climate Action Plan. 

    Who can apply: All UIC students and student organizations are eligible to apply. If needed, the GFAB will help provide access to campus resources and personnel to approve projects. GFAB can also suggest other entities that may provide funding or other assistance.

  • Two opportunities for students interested in film/videography/video editing and disability studies and human development

    1) Help shoot and edit a brief video on the experiences of amputee athletes and prosthetics.  Time commitment of 10-20 hours off campus between now and April 1. Contact Prof. Paikoff-Holzmueller at birdy@uic.edu

    2) A doctoral candidate in Disability Studies at UIC is working on a dissertation that addresses social relations of older adults with intellectual disabilities from a life course perspective.  The project will include the development of a 15-20 minute DVD with the life stories of six individuals with intellectual disabilities. This DVD will be used as an education and advocacy tool at agencies and universities. Seeking a research assistant to help collect video materials and edit final video beginning this spring.     Since 1995, Toys for Tots has helped spread cheer during the holiday season through the generosity of donors. The UIC community is joining this effort by collecting toys for excited Cook County children. Please consider donating this year and brightening the life of a young child.

    New and unwrapped toys for children ages 0-13 can be dropped off at any of the collection sites on East Campus. Toys that are used or contain weapons or food cannot be accepted.

    From October 16-18, Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Chicago Ideas Week, World Business Chicago, 1871, and University of Illinois invite university students from across the Midwest to take a behind-the-scenes tour of Chicago’s fast growing tech scene and attend Chicago Ideas Week events.

    Up to 150 students (75 from University of Illinois) will be selected based on their interest in digital technology, engineering, computer science, innovation, and/or entrepreneurship. Prospective students should demonstrate a commitment to excellence as evidenced by academic honors, leadership ability, extracurricular activities, and/or professional achievement.

    The Norton Writer’s Prize will be awarded annually for an outstanding essay written by an undergraduate. Literacy narratives, literary and other textual analyses, reports, profiles, evaluations, arguments, memoirs, proposals, mixed-genre pieces, and more: any excellent writing done for an undergraduate writing class will be considered.

    The winner will receive a cash award of $1,500. Two runners-up will each receive a cash award of $1,000.The deadline for submissions is June 15, 2015.

  • The Berkeley Prize for Undergraduate Essays in German Studies, Due March 13, 2015

    The Berkeley Undergraduate Essay Prize is awarded annually by the Department of German for outstanding unpublished papers written during the previous calendar year by undergraduate students enrolled at a North American university/college. Thus the 2015 prize will consider papers written during 2014 on a broad range of topics in German studies. The winning essays carry a cash award of $500 each and will be considered for publication in the department’s electronic journal TRANSIT.
     
    Essays for submission may be written in German or in English; one submission per student. They should be double-spaced, between 3000 and 5000 words in length (including notes and references), and without the student’s name on the paper, since the Awards Committee reads the essays anonymously. A separate cover sheet with the student’s name, major, year of study, title of the paper, address, phone number, e-address, and plans for graduate school (if applicable) should accompany the essay. The essay may be submitted in hard copy or electronically.  The paper has to have been written in the 16 months prior to the essay deadline.  The submission deadline is March 13, 2015; winners announced May 1.

  • The ATC Youth Ensemble Presents "Greensboro: A Requiem"

    The American Theater Company Youth Ensemble is currently staging Greensboro, a documentary play about the aftermath of the Woolworth's lunch counter sit-in in Greensboro, NC.

    The Greensboro sit-in was one of the crucial events which sparked the civil rights movement that swept the country during the 1960s. The play tells the story of a group of protesters who joined the demonstrations, motivated by the refusal of four Black youths to leave the Woolworth's "Whites Only" lunch counter in 1960. During the larger protests that followed, many protesters were met with police and public violence--and several were killed.

    The script is comprised entirely of verbatim quotes from survivors and associates of the people who participated in that protest.

    We encourage all of you--and others you know who may be interested in this historical event, supporting professional-level youth theater in Chicago, or simply good theater--to attend what will certainly be an excellent performance.

    Previous ATC Youth Ensemble productions include Gold Star Ohio--a play which documented the profound affect of the loss of several soldiers from small towns in Ohio over a matter of weeks during the first battle for Fallujah--and Columbinus--a documentary play about the Columbine, CO killings.

    Greensboro will run from July 16 to August 2, every Thursday through Saturday at 7:30pm and Sundays at 2pm. Ticket are free, and reservations can be made by emailing (greensboro@atcweb.org) or calling (773-409-4125 ext. 107).

    The Sustainability Fee funds small, short-term projects, subsidizes larger, long-term projects on campus, and helps to fund student travel to sustainability-related conferences. Funding from this fee is administered by the SFAB, which is comprised of undergraduate, graduate, and professional students, as well as faculty and staff.
