    The 2014 Chicago Law School Forum will on Saturday, September 13, 2014 at The Palmer House Hilton, located on 17 East Monroe Street, Chicago, IL 60603. The forum runs from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm but is broken down into two parts:

    9:00 am–4:00 pm: Workshops
    11:00 am–4:00 pm: Talk with School Reps

    This event is designed to bring law schools to prospective students so that students get the opportunity to ask important questions, such as:

  • National Cancer Institute Summer Research Fellowship, Apply by 2/15

    The National Cancer Institute’s (NCI) Cancer Systems Biology Consortium and Physical Sciences in Oncology Network are offering rising Junior and Senior undergraduates with outstanding research potential the opportunity to work closely with faculty mentors from NCI-supported institutions for an 8-week summer fellowship. The 2017 summer research program is designed specifically for students to gain experience in the interdisciplinary fields of systems biology and physical oncology. Students who are especially interested in cancer research careers are encouraged to apply. Opportunities are available at 14 research institutions across the United States. Stipend, housing, and travel to and from the host institution are covered by NCI. Additionally, students will convene at the NIH in Bethesda, MD, mid-way through the summer to present their research and network with their peers.

  • Society of Future Physicians Lecture: Dr. Kirstie Danielson, Ph.D. Epidemiologist

    Dr. Danielson is a chronic disease epidemiologist, trained at the University of Wisconsin, with specific expertise in type 1 diabetes and osteoporosis. Her current research focuses on Islet Cell Transplant as a treatment method for Type 1 Diabetes. In addition, she is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Transplant Surgery, and a departmental affiliate in the Division of Epidemiology & Biostatistics at UIC. Hear her valuable and in-depth insights about her journey into the field of Public Health and the importance of public health in medicine!

  • Summer Internships Available at Simmons Cancer Institute at SIU, Apply by Fri. 3/13

    College students interested in a career in medicine or cancer research are invited to apply for one of four internships at Simmons Cancer Institute (SCI) at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. Interns will have the opportunity to learn laboratory and critical thinking skills while immersed in research labs under the supervision of SCI faculty members.

    Three intern positions are located at the School of Medicine campus in Springfield. The fourth position is located at the SIU Carbondale campus.

    “The internships provide successful candidates with daily hands-on experience in our active cancer research labs and hopefully will further strengthen their interests in biomedical research and medicine, including cancer research,” said Dr. Donald S. Torry, professor and chair of the Department of Medical Microbiology, Immunology and Cell Biology.

    Qualified individuals will have completed their freshman year of college by June 2015 and not have graduated from college prior to June 2015.

    Applicants should submit a current college transcript, a résumé and two letters of reference from instructors, along with a personal statement letter describing current studies, activities and future goals. The paid internships are awarded on a competitive basis.

  • Volunteer with Illinois JusticeCorps and/or Visit the Daley Center Courthouse

    Volunteer with the Illinois JusticeCorps and learn about legal documents and how the court system at the Daley Center operates.

    In addition, the Pre-Law Society will be planning a group visit to the Daley Center courthouse to tour the Cook County Resource Center for People Without a Lawyer, where students will learn more about Illinois JusticeCorps and undergraduate volunteer opportunities. We will meet April 15th (a Friday) at 3:00 in the Montgomery Ward Lounge to take the Blue Line together to the courthouse.

  • Join Black Tech Scholars, Apply by Mon. 7/11

    In collaboration with Productive Edge, a dynamic and innovative technology company, the University of Illinois at Chicago’s African American Academic Network and Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies have partnered to implement a program that will foster diversity in the technology space through coding opportunities.

    During this year-long commitment, Black Tech Scholars will have the opportunity to acquire business acumen to start their own businesses and gain valuable hands-on experience building mobile-friendly websites. 

    In addition to practical training, Scholars selected for the program will engage in the following activities/opportunities: 

    - Obtain mentor ship from entrepreneurs and tech professionals
    - Participate in job shadowing and networking activities
    - Engage in real time projects on building web and mobile applications
    - Connect directly with executive staff professionals to sustain paid internships
    - Develop effective presentation skills

    Scholars who are interested in the Black Tech Scholars Program should meet the following criteria: 

    - Be in good academic standing
    - Have a minimum of 2.4 GPA
    - Must have at least completed two concurrent semesters at UIC prior to the fall semester 2016
    - Be able to make a year-long commitment to the program
    - Recognition of participation/completion of programmatic activities will be listed on official transcript. 

    Applications should be submitted no later than Monday, July 11, 2016.  Applicants will then be contacted to schedule an interview.  Interviews will begin the week of July 18th.  Applicants will be notified of a final decision in August.  The program has a limited number of spaces available, so we encourage applicants to apply today.

  • UIC College of Pharmacy Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship

    The College of Pharmacy at UIC invites undergraduate students to apply for the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Program. The objective of this program is to introduce undergraduate students to biomedical research in order to heighten interest in science as a career and increase the number of young scientists entering the biomedical research disciplines.

    The SURF program is located on UIC’s West Campus, in the center of the Illinois Medical District--one of the largest concentrations of advanced health care facilities in the nations-- and just minutes from downtown Chicago. Our location gives us convenient access to a diverse range of cutting-edge research, collaborators and patient populations.

    The SURF Program is funded by an institutional award from the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (ASPET).

    Program Dates:

    The SURF program runs for 10 weeks, starting on Thursday, June 1, 2017 and ending on Wednesday, August 9, 2017.

    SURF Program Description:

    ASPET-sponsored SURF program is for undergraduate students interested in biomedical research.  Students will work on independent research projects in the laboratories of their faculty mentors.  Before beginning work, students will attend relevant laboratory safety training.  In addition to individual mentoring, the program offers number of enrichment activities:  research seminars, advanced research instrumentation workshops, career day at a local pharmaceutical company, instructions on how to prepare a scientific presentation, practice talks and a mini-symposium where all the participants present their research projects in front of the College audience.  SURF participants will receive compensation of $3,000 for the 10 week period.

    The 2017 Application Cycle is now open. Please read the application instructions carefully and apply by February 1, 2017.

    Eligibility Requirements:

    Sophomores or juniors majoring in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, or related field. GPA of 3.2 or higher on a 4.0 scale. Students should have a strong desire to pursue an advanced degree (PhD or PharmD/PhD) and must be available for the full 10 weeks of the program. The program is open to all US Citizens and Permanent Residents. Undergraduate students from groups underrepresented in health-related sciences, i.e. individuals from ethnic or racial groups (African American, Hispanic American, Native American, Alaskan and Hawaiian Natives); individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds, and individuals with physical or mental disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply.

    The NBCUniversal/LNESC Scholarship Program is intended to assist and encourage outstanding Latino high school seniors and undergraduate students who plan to pursue a bachelor’s degree at a U. S. post-secondary institution. The NBCUniversal/LNESC Scholarship Program is sponsored by NBCUniversal and administered by the LULAC National Educational Service Centers (LNESC).

    The NBCUniversal/LNESC Scholarship Program will award ten (10) $5,000 national scholarships to qualified high school seniors and undergraduate students. Applicants must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale or the equivalent; must have scored 26 or higher on the ACT test, or 1770 or higher on the SAT test (for high school seniors only); AND applied to or be enrolled full-time in an accredited college or university.

    Application - Available starting June 15th, 2015  

    Applicants must submit the following by the deadline of July 31st, 2015:

    - Completed and signed application form
    - Official transcript with proof of GPA

  • Stem Research and Career Symposium

    The Fourth Annual Emory University-Laney Graduate School STEM Research and Career Symposium will be September 18-20, 2016.  This is a great opportunity for students to present their research, attend career development workshops, and learn about career and training opportunities at Emory and elsewhere.  

    Key points about the symposium are as follows:

    Dates and venue – September 18-20, 2016, Emory Conference Center.

    Full travel scholarships available for underrepresented students. Last year 60% of student attendees received full travel awards and another 10% received partial travel awards.

    Application deadline May 1st, 2016 Students undergoing their first research experience this summer may apply to a second deadline of August 1st.

    For undergraduates AND graduate students, and their mentors.

    All students (graduate and undergraduate)are encouraged to apply to attend, as well as their mentors.     Details of the conference are summarized below.

    A premier research conference for undergraduates interested in learning about PhD, MD/PhD or postbaccalaureate programs; graduate students contemplating postdoctoral training; and the advisors of these students.

    Interactions with Emory research faculty mentors, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows.

    Round table discussion for faculty and program staff attendees with a group of Emory faculty.

     

    Due to the success of last year’s symposium and the restricted number of attendees, competition for acceptance will be spirited. Only abstracts that report outcomes/results will be competitive. Up to ten students will be selected from the submitted abstracts to present a platform talk, and their advisors will also receive a travel award if necessary. All remaining student participants will be expected to present a poster on their research.

    Mentors who write letters of reference for their students will be notified by e-mail whether or not the application was successful.   At that time mentors will also receive information about how to register to attend with their students if they wish to do so.   If you have any questions, please e-mail stem.symposia@emory.edu.

  • STEM Teaching Fellowship opportunity, Application Due Sun. 1/31

    If you would like to put your math or science knowledge to work for the young people who need them most, the Woodrow Wilson Teaching Fellowship Program is an unparalleled opportunity. For top applicants, this prestigious fellowship offers a generous stipend ($30,000-32,000) toward completion of a master's degree program at a Woodrow Wilson partner institution in Georgia, Indiana, or New Jersey. Fellows undergo a year-long clinical experience in a high-need school, along with rigorous subject matter courses, then commit to teach for three years in urban or rural secondary schools, with mentoring throughout the entire process.
