UH Stepping into Graduate School Day
Friday, September 22, 2017
APPLICATIONS DUE by JULY 21, 2017
The Department of Psychology at the University of Houston (UH) is pleased to host “Stepping into Graduate School Day” on September 22, 2017. This one-day event is open to all students interested in enhancing diversity in Psychology, but we particularly encourage applications from students from historically underrepresented groups. The Psychology graduate programs at UH are doctoral programs that prepare students for careers as faculty members at top research institutions, scientist-practitioners in clinical settings, research scientists, an senior consultants in various settings. Admitted doctoral students receive a tuition waiver and are eligible to serve as research or teaching assistants/fellows with a monthly stipend.
This one-day event will provide a host of essential information about attending graduate school at UH, our award winning Psychology department, and the city of Houston - one of the most diverse and multicultural cities in the US. The program will include presentations by Psychology faculty, lunch with current UH graduate students, break-out groups to help students prepare competitive graduate school applications, information about funding and resources available to underrepresented students, a diversity workshop, and tours of faculty research labs.
Eligibility: Senior undergraduate students, post-baccalaureate, and Master’s students interested in pursuing doctoral training in: a) Clinical, b) Cognitive, Developmental or Behavioral Neuroscience, c) Social, or d) Industrial/Organizational Psychology. We particularly encourage applications from students of African American, Hispanic, Native American and Asian/Pacific Islander backgrounds.
Requirements: An overall GPA of 3.0 or higher and prior experience conducting or working in a research setting is required. GRE scores are not required but preference will be given to applicants who submit GRE scores.
Housing: Out-of-town attendees will be expected to arrive the day before (on Thursday) and have the option of staying with a current graduate student in the program matching the applicant’s interest. Attendees can depart on Friday evening or stay with their host for an additional night in order to spend time exploring Houston.
Travel: Applicants who live within 100 miles (driving distance) of UH will be expected to provide their own transportation. For those traveling from further distances, transportation reimbursement will be provided.
Application: Please go to https://uhpsychology.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_9ukAnma8NUdwh9j to complete an application, including: 1) a two-page, single-spaced personal statement describing your specific career goals, and the doctoral program you are interested in attending, and your background reflects a diverse experience; 2) an unofficial copy of your college transcripts; 3) a resume or CV; 4) one letter of recommendation; and 5) your GRE scores, if available.
