In the summer of '64, over a thousand Northern young people boarded buses to register African Americans to vote in some of the most violent areas of Mississippi. Just as they were leaving, they heard the news that the young Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) activists James Cheney, Michael Schwerner, and Andrew Goodman had been "disappeared" and were probably murdered at the hands of the Ku Klux Klan.  Nevertheless, the "freedom rides" to Mississippi continued. Black sharecroppers and farmers, violating the most sacred racial taboos of the Jim Crow South, opened their homes to these young, mostly white, volunteers. Freedom Summer registered thousands of black voters, organized youth-led legal and medical teams, and launched "Freedom Schools” for teaching about Black history and social activism.

Freedom Summer was one of the most important interracial grass-roots movements for social change and racial justice. Come and hear how they did it, from those who did it.

Dr. Roy DeBerry, Youth Activist in Holy Springs, Mississippi, and student of Freedom School. Educator, former Vice President of Jackson State University, co-founder and Executive Director of Hill County Project, an oral history project that archives civil rights history in Benton County, MS.

Mr. Jim Lewis, Civil rights worker in Southwest Mississippi, 1965-1966, civil rights attorney in Jackson and Oxford, 1966-1973.  United States Attorney, Central District of Illinois.

Ms. Aviva Futorian, Freedom School teacher. Field organizer for Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). Human rights attorney, prison reform activist. Co-founder of Hill County Project.

Dr. Peter Orris, Freedom Summer volunteer and activist. Professor and Director, Occupational Health Service Institute, UIC.

Mr. Hollis Watkins, Lincoln County organizer for Freedom Summer. Participant in first McComb County sit-in at Woolworth's lunch counter, for which he was jailed 34 days. First Mississippi student to become involved in the Mississippi Voting Rights Project of SNCC. Lead singer of "freedom songs." Founder of Southern Echo, Inc., Chairman of the Veterans of the Mississippi Civil Rights Movement, Inc.

Moderated by Dr. Natasha Barnes, Associate Professor of English and African American Studies, andDr. Johari Jabir, Assistant Professor of African American Studies.

  • U.S. National Parks Artist-in-Residency Programs, Deadline 4/15

    Deadlines are approaching.

Get out of the city and into nature to reinvigorate your artistic energy with one of the many residencies offered across the country by the U.S. National Parks Service.

According to the National Park Service:

"Artists have created art in national parks since the late 19th century when famed Hudson River School painters captured the majestic views of our nation's western parks. Today, the sights and sounds in national parks continue to inspire artists in more than 50 residency programs across the country."

Deadline for many summer and fall residencies are approaching. Locations not to far from Chicago include  the Indiana Dunes (with an April 20 deadline) and Sleeping Bear Dunes in Michigan (with an April 15 deadline). If you really feel like getting away by staying in a remote wilderness cabin, then try Denali National Preserve in Alaska, which has an open deadline starting May 1.

Wherever you decide to apply, these programs provide artists with unique opportunities to create work in varied natural and cultural settings. There are programs for visual artists, writers, musicians, and other creative media. Programs vary, but residencies are typically 2 to 4 weeks in length and most include lodging. Often artists are invited to participate in park programs by sharing their art with the public. Each park in this directory has its own application process and timeline, so visit the National Park Service website for further information.

But for four years in a row at Urban Prep Academies, the nation’s first network of all-male charter public high schools, 100% of seniors have gained admission to attend four-year colleges and universities.  Do you have the skills, passion and energy to help us to continue to prepare urban boys to succeed in college? If so, consider applying to join the Urban Prep Fellows Program, a distinctive full-time, one-year service fellowship opportunity for recent college graduates.  Urban Prep Fellows augment and support regular classroom learning by building bonds with first year students through academic and personal advising, managing after-school activities, communicating with families and leading a small-group seminar course. During their service year, Fellows are provided with housing, transportation, health and dental insurance and a monthly living stipend.  Click on the post to view more.

Up to Us is a national campus competition that educates students about the national debt and specifically student debt. It seeks to empower students to make more of their time on campus and to learn about what debt means for America's future. If the campaign is successful, our team from UIC will be recognized at the Clinton Global Initiative University meeting in San Francisco, CA!
