  • Important Information for Students Involved in Research!

  • In/Between Conference Undergraduate Research Poster Session, Abstracts Due Fri. 2/3

    Students of all related majors and minors are invited to participate in the annual Undergraduate Research Poster Session that takes place in conjunction with the In/Between conference in the School of Literatures, Cultural Studies and Linguistics. The top three presentations will win awards in the amount of $50, $100, and $150. If you have recently or are currently engaged in a research project, please consider participating by designing a poster and preparing a 5-minute summary of your work (and preparing to be asked conversational questions). Just send the title of your research project and a 150-200 word description (abstract) of it by Friday, February 3, 5 pm.

    The poster session will take place on Thursday, March 9 at 10 am. If you have a class conflict at that hour, we will be happy to contact your instructor to request an excused absence so that you may participate.

    Indiana Review Online: an Undergraduate Project submission guidelines:

    The subject of the email must read: YOUR NAME, GENRE OF SUBMISSION, “NAME OF SUBMISSION” (ex.: Jacob Smith, Short Fiction Submission, “The Smallest Thing”). The submission email must come from a University address. The body of the email must include the following information, in exactly this format:

    SUBMITTER NAMENAME OF SUBMITTER’S UNDERGRADUATE UNIVERSITYYEAR AT UNIVERSITY (Junior, Senior, etc)TITLE(S) OF WORK SUBMITTED (If fiction, please include the word count)

    No cover letter is necessary.

  • Individual Artists Program Grants, Apply by 10/6

    The goal of the Individual Artists Program (IAP) is to discover, nurture, and expand Chicago’s practicing artists and creative professionals. Through this grant program, DCASE will award project-based grants to Chicago-based artists and creative professionals over 18 years of age, at all career levels (emerging, mid-career, mature), and working across numerous disciplines. Funds are awarded through two separate IAP programs Track 1: Creative Projects Track 2: Professional Development.Artists may only apply to one of the two funding tracks per year.

  • Integrated Biological Sciences Summer Research Program at UW-Madison, Apply by Sun. 2/15

    he Institute for Biology Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison invites junior and senior undergraduate students interested in research careers in the biological sciences to participate in the Integrated Biological Sciences Summer Research Program (IBS-SRP). As part of the program, students do full-time research for 10 weeks with a faculty member in one of eight disciplinary areas.  Applications are due on February 15, 2014.  Click on the post to learn more.

  • Interdisciplinary Social Science Research Opportunity w/ Dr. Xochitl Bada

    Dr. Xochitl Bada is seeking an undergraduate research assistant.  

    The undergraduate research assistant will provide support under my supervision for the following projects and will gain valuable experience using different methodologies in interdisciplinary social science research. He/she will also be introduced to different research teams in different universities.  Potential projects include:

    1  Consular Partnerships to Enforce Labor Standards for Immigrant Workers. This project addresses the labor rights enforcement disparities experienced Mexican workers and analyzes the bilateral agreements between the DOL and the Mexican consular network across the U.S. to improve access to labor standards agencies. An undergraduate research assistant will support this project with database management and coding in preparation for the analysis.

    2 An Oral Histories collection of Mexican Hometown Association (HTA) members and leaders in Chicago. This is a new project that I am developing in collaboration with the Newberry Library. I have plans to create the first collection of Mexican HTA members and leaders to be archived at the Newberry. The student working as my research assistant will be required to conduct a few of the interviews

    3. Rurality, Development, and Migration in Mexico. What do we know? This project analysis the changes in the relationship between migration and rurality in Mexico between 2000 and 2010. Using census information, the project maps the continuities and changes in the migratory patterns in the context of rurality in Mexico´s countryside. The student working as my research assistant will have to support the data analysis of 1,740 municipalities for each decennial count and produce graphs and tables. Some experience with excel and basic database management skill is necessary.

    Minimum qualifications are the ability to read, write, and speak Spanish and/or advanced knowledge of excel or any other spreadsheet software. Ideally, the student should have already taken and passed MATH 090, MATH 092 or MATH 118.  Student must be willing to work a minimum of 10 hours/week with a flexible schedule.  Student will need to be willing to apply for full funding from the CURA program.

  • International Conference on Sexual Assault, Domestic Violence, and Gender Bias – Poster Submission Deadline: Dec 1

  • International Goethe Society Essay Prize, Deadline Jan. 31

    The International Goethe Society will meet in May 2015 at a conference on the topic of "Goethe and European Romanticism." They are sponsoring a student essay contest in conjunction with the event. The deadline is in January and the details (in German!) are in the attached document. Prizes include free accommodations and entrance to cultural sites during the conference and publication in the 2015 Goethe-Jahrbuch. Any UIC winner would be encouraged to apply for travel funding through various units at UIC.  Entry Deadline is January 31, 2015.

  • Internship in Medical Social Sciences

    We are looking for a volunteer intern to join our research team in assisting with a research project at the Feinberg School of Medicine in the Department of Medical Social Sciences at Northwestern University. This opportunity would be a great fit for anyone interested in pursuing medical school or graduate programs in psychology, behavioral health, or public health. Through this internship, you will gain hands-on experience working with experts in the field, and you will have access to Northwestern’s state-of-the art research facilities. You will also have the chance to develop and refine your research skills.

    The study with which the intern would be assisting are part of the Biopsychosocial Mechanisms and Health Outcomes Program.  The primary project for which we currently need volunteers involves a technology-based psychosocial intervention for men with advanced prostate cancer. 

    The intern will assist with various tasks in support of the study, including:

    Reviewing patient medical records (usually electronic) Screening these records for participant eligibility Sending letters and making phone calls to recruit potential participants Conducting phone screeners potential participants Making follow-up calls Preparing study materials (i.e. paper assessment forms, saliva sample kits, etc.) Data extraction from participant medical charts Other required data entry Miscellaneous tasks as needed

    Interested individuals must commit 12 hours per week, which can be split among 2 or 3 days, depending on your schedule.  We request that you make a commitment of at least 6 months for this position. Please note that you will be working on-site in our research office, located in the Streeterville area of Chicago. Interest in psychological, social and/or medical research is preferred; prior experience working with cancer patients is ideal. Spanish language skills are also preferred but not required. Some of the tasks include reviewing patient records, screening, recruiting, consenting and completing assessments with patients, managing and aiding in the analysis of data, translating study materials into Spanish, and aiding in the development and implementation of an eHealth intervention.

    Interested students would need to commit to coming into the lab for two to three days per week (12 hours weekly) for a period of at least a semester. Spoken and written fluency in Spanish is required; having research, psychological, social and/or medical interests is preferred. Training in medical language in English and Spanish will be provided.      The National Cancer Institute (NCI) is pleased to announce the 2016 Introduction to Cancer Research Careers (ICRC) Program.  ICRC encourages individuals from populations underrepresented in science or financially disadvantaged backgrounds to seek internship opportunities at the NCI.  Successful ICRC applicants will take part in a 2-day sponsored campus visit to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland, where they will have the opportunity to learn about the various scientist-in-training programs, participate in laboratory tours, and interview for either a summer or post-baccalaureate (1-year) internship.  Participants selected for internships will receive a monthly stipend, round-trip travel, and a summer housing subsidy.  Housing for the interns is not included, however, a list of housing resources will be provided.

    If a student is hired by an NCI investigator as an intern, he/she will work under their direction and in concert with other researchers, fellows, and technicians.     ICRC interns are provided with travel support and a monthly stipend with summer housing subsidy.

    All interns are required to carry health insurance. No-cost health insurance is available for interns who work a minimum of three months.

  • iSchool Inclusion Institute: Summer Research Program in the Information Sciences, Apply by Tues. 3/31

    The iSchool Inclusion Institute (i3) is an undergraduate research and leadership development program that prepares students from underrepresented populations for graduate study and careers in the information sciences. Only 25 students from across the country are selected each year to become i3 Scholars. Those students undertake a yearlong experience that includes two summer institutes hosted by the University of Pittsburgh School of Information Sciences and a research project spanning the year.

  • JOB: Research Assistant Needed for 2014-2015 Oral History Project

    Professors Jennifer Brier and Elena Gutierrez seek a UIC undergraduate research assistant to work with us on our year-long collaborative project to collect oral histories of Chicana activists in Chicago. Co-PIs Brier and Gutierrez plan to collect more than a dozen oral histories in the fall 2014 semester. The research assistant will be responsible for maintaining a secondary research data base, coordinating oral history sessions, scheduling the use of equipment by various partners, participating in oral history sessions (technical support and interviewing), digitizing materials, annotating and revising transcriptions of interviews, and generally supporting the research related to this project.

    We seek someone who can commit to 12-15 hours per week for the fall, with the possibility of extending it through the spring. Applicants should be well-organized, competent in secondary research skills and able to work independently. Archival research, internet savvy, Spanish language competency and interview experience and are a plus.

    Depending on the students qualifications and work experience, the pay scale would be $8.77-$10.38 /hr.

  • LAS Paid Undergraduate Research Opportunities (LASURI), Apply by Mon. 3/3

    Conduct research and earn financial support through the LASURI program!

    Are you interested in working on a real research project with a professor?  Would you like to receive financial support to do so?  Then you should apply for the Liberal Arts and Sciences Undergraduate Research Initiative (LASURI).

    Applications will be accepted through March 3, 2014, so it’s time for you to start reaching out to your professors to learn more about how you might participate in a research project.  

    You can find a faculty mentor by going to the Undergraduate Research Experience website (www.ure.uic.edu ) or talking to your instructors, TAs and departmental advisors or Directors of Undergraduate Studies.

    To be eligible, you must be a full-time LAS student who will have earned at least 24 credit hours by the time you begin the research project next fall; hold a minimum 2.5 GPA and be registered for course credit during the semester(s) in which the research takes place.

    Your faculty mentor for the project must be affiliated with a department in the college and may have tenure-track, clinical, emeritus or research associate appointments. 

    Undergraduate Research Assistants can expect to spend 6-10 hours per week working on their research project.  Undergraduate Research Assistants receive a $2500 award per academic year ($1250.00 per semester), and their Faculty Mentors receive a $1500 grant for project costs.

    Students must interview with faculty and submit the completed application online by Monday, March 3, 2014.

    Applications are now available for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Undergraduate Research Initiative  (LASURI)  competition for the 2015-2016 academic year.

    LASURI is a college-wide program that works with Undergraduate Research Assistants and Faculty Mentors, providing funding to conduct semester- or year-long research projects. Students receive $2500.00 per year, and mentors receive $1000.00 per year for project costs. All types of research projects – humanities, social science, and natural science – are welcome.

  • LASURI Research Grants, Deadline 3/1

    Through the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences' LASURI program, undergraduate students and faculty receive funding to work together to condcut research. LASURI is a college-wide program that supports undergraduate research assistants working with faculty mentors by providing funding for single-semester- or year-long research projects. Students receive a $2500.00 award ($1250.00 per semester), and faculty receive $1000.00 ($500 per semester) to cover project costs.

    Any UIC faculty member with an appointment in LAS may serve as a mentor for the LASURI program, which is open to full-time LAS students.  LASURI encourages projects representing the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and interdisciplinary studies.

    Who can Apply?  

    The program is open to any LAS undergraduate with a minimum 2.5 GPA who is a full-time student during the semester(s) in which the research takes place.  Faculty mentors must be affiliated with a department in LAS, and may have tenure-track, clinical, emeritus or research associate appointments.

    How does LASURI work?

     Faculty members may invite students to work with them, or students   may reach out to faculty.  Some participants find partnerships via the Undergraduate Research Experience (URE) website at www.ure.uic.edu

    Faculty mentors and students meet to determine if they would like to  work together, design a specific project and establish expectations  for the project, and work together on the application.

    The online student application is due at noon Tuesday, March 1, 2016; the brief faculty mentor review is due at noon Thursday March 3, 2016.

    At the end of each academic year, students are expected to present their research projects at the UIC Student Research Forum and submit their abstracts to the LASURI Abstract Archive.

    Lavender Research Forum:  Highlighting Undergraduate and Graduate LGBTQPA Research

    CALL FOR STUDENT PAPERS

    The UIC Chancellor’s Committee on the Status of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer People and Allies (LGBTQPA) Issues is accepting submissions for student research papers to be presented at the Lavender Research Forum on Monday, April 14, 2014 on the UIC Campus. Papers submitted for consideration should examine topics pertaining to LGBTQPA people, straight allies, and intersex people and communities. All applicants will be notified by March 10 if they have been selected to present at the Forum.

    Awards: In addition to selection for presentation, the two papers most highly rated by the committee will be awarded monetary prizes: 1st prize: $200,  2nd Prize: $100.                 

    Selection will be made by a review committee who will not know the paper’s author(s).

    Rules for the 2014 Paper Competition

    1.     Author(s) must be enrolled as undergraduate or graduate students at UIC
    2.     Paper may have more than one author but all authors must be UIC students
    3.     Author(s) can only submit one paper for consideration
    4.     Original research must have IRB approval
    5.     All authors must be available to present their work at the Forum
    6.     The submission must follow the following format and content guidelines
      1.     10 pages maximum single space including references and appendices
      2.     Cover page, with affiliation, short biography, lay abstract
      3.     Narrative including introduction, literature review, design, findings, and significance

    This conference will highlight the leading science, curriculum design and implementation and data exploration in a research-rich biology education for high school and undergraduate students.

    A major goal of the conference is to foster communities of practice and encourage the sharing of best practices in biology education across grades. The Education Share Fair will be a central event for participants to contribute to a collection of lesson ideas as well as teacher-friendly scientific resources including photo collections, figures and charts and datasets etc. leading to publication in theLifeDiscoveryEd Digital Library.

  • Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) Research Experience, Mon. 3/3

    Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in collaboration with the National Science Foundation (NSF) invites  students to partake in our 2014 Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) Research Experience.  This summer research program brings together underrepresented* minority undergraduate students in the STEM fields for the summer to experience laboratory research under the mentorship of premier Rensselaer faculty. 

    This eight week program is designed to help curious and solution-oriented students gain confidence in the lab, develop enthusiasm for graduate school, cultivate a professional network, and earn attractive qualifications. Participants will participate in professional development activities and present their research. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is located in upstate New York, 110 Eighth Street, Troy, NY 12180.
