Dr. Lisa Wu is seeking volunteer interns to join her research team at the Department of Medical Social Sciences, Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University.
This position will begin in January 2018.
Interns will assist with studies focusing on light therapy for patients who have either completed or are actively going through cancer treatment (i.e. radiation therapy or stem cell transplant). These studies examine the relationship between light exposure and cancer- and treatment-related symptoms in these patient populations.
This opportunity would be a great fit for anyone interested in pursuing graduate programs in psychology, behavioral health, public health, or pursuing medical school. Interns will gain hands-on experience working with experts in the field and have access to Northwestern’s state-of-the art research facilities. They will also have the chance to refine research skills.
Interns will assist with various tasks in support of the study, including:
- Reviewing electronic medical records
- Screening these records for participant eligibility
- Sending letters and calling to recruit participants
- Phone screening potential participants
- Making follow-up calls to participants
- Preparing study materials (i.e. assessment forms, saliva sample kits, blood collection kits, etc.)
- Running and tracking participants through behavioral studies
- Setting up and maintaining study and survey software on Northwestern’s REDCap platform
- Extracting data from participant medical records
- Entering data from participant documents
- Miscellaneous tasks as needed
Individuals must commit 12 hours per week, which can be split among 2 or 3 days. Minimum commitment is at least 6 months (or two academic quarters) for this position. Interns will work on-site in Department of Medical Social Sciences research offices, located in the Streeterville area of Chicago, and will report directly to Dr. Wu’s study coordinator.
Knowledge of Microsoft word, power point, and excel is necessary. Interest in psychological, social, and/or medical research is preferred; prior experience working with (cancer) patients is ideal.
