  • Join USG’s Academic and Advising Policy Committee (AAPC), Sign up by Fri. 10/10

    UIC Students:

    My name is Jacob Schulz and I currently serve as President of the Undergraduate Student Government. As President, one of my goals is to work towards improving our academic and advising curriculum. Therefore, I have created the Academic and Advising Policy Committee (AAPC), a special committee of the Undergraduate Student Government. I am seeking student representatives from each college to join this committee. Listed below are the goals of the AAPC:

    • A thorough analysis of the SIT Data
    • Identify common core issues that students face in our classrooms.
    • Identify effective practices that students face in our classrooms.
    • Encourage all UIC Colleges to use the same advising system that is administered by the Vice Provost of Faculty Affairs.
    • Solicit input from students through forums and events in regards to academic policies.
    • Encourage all UIC Colleges to create an evaluation system for advisors.
    • Solicit feedback from students about common issues faced with advisors.
    • Identify effective advising practices.
    • Establish a list of Academic and Advising Policy Recommendations.
    • Work with faculty representatives from each college to garner feedback and possible support for our recommendations.
    • Submit them for consideration and possible implementation to the Undergraduate Policy Committee.

    Kamal Kishore Kapur Memorial Prize Essay contest!

    This year's prompt is *"What does post-9/11 activism mean to you?" *Write a 500-word essay on the impact of post-9/11 activism at UIC, in Chicago, within your own community, or internationally. Essays will be judged for engaging content, strength of writing, and originality of presentation.

    Diverse viewpoints and experiences are welcome. Specific UIC perspectives are highly encouraged.

    Any currently registered UIC undergraduate students are eligible to enter. You do not have to be of Asian or Arab American descent.

    Students are awarded prizes of $200 for 1st prize and $100 for 2nd prize. Winners will be recognized at the Asian American Studies Expo event on April 20th at 4pm.

  • Knight New Challenge: Submit your ideas about how to inform voters and increase civic participation, Due 3/19

    The Knight News Challenge: Elections will open for applications on Feb. 25 asking people to submit ideas that address the question: How might we better inform voters and increase civic participation before, during and after elections?

    Winners will receive a share of more than $3 million from the challenge, a collaboration between Knight, the Democracy Fund, Hewlett Foundation and Rita Allen Foundation. We are interested in ideas from anyone including: civic technologists, local election officials, academics, students, startups, and nonprofits, as well as governments and individuals.

  • LAS Pre-Health Advisory Board, Apply by Wed. 4/15

    Do you want to be the voice of your fellow students on issues that matter to you? Are you interested in taking an active role in LAS, pre-health advising and helping to create health-related resources?

    The LAS Pre-Health Advising office is interested in hearing your input, opinions, and recommendations, and you are encouraged to apply to become part of the LAS Pre-Health Advisory Board.

    The LAS Pre-Health Advisory Board provides a student voice to the Student Affairs office and pre-health advisors on all issues affecting your experience within LAS, specifically pertaining to your health-related educational and/or career goals. The board is open to all undergraduate students in LAS who plan to attend UIC for the 2015-2016 school year. Students in all majors are encouraged to apply. Applications from transfer students, commuter students, and students who live on campus are welcome.

    The group typically meets two or three times per semester to discuss specific topics of interest. Members of the group also have the opportunity to serve as paid ambassadors of the College at a variety of events (new student welcome reception and recruiting events, etc.)

    If you are interested, fill out the application by noon on Wednesday, April 15th. You will be asked to log in with your UIC Net ID and password. Selected students will be contacted by April 22nd, 2015. One meeting will be planned before the end of the semester. Two meetings times will be held the week of April 27th.  Students need only attend one meeting.

  • LeaderShape Deadline Extended - DUE 3/28

    Student Leadership Development and Volunteer Services is extending the deadline to submit applications to attend the LeaderShape Institute.

    The Institute, provided by LeaderShape, is a six-day, five-night leadership retreat teaching visioning, relationship-building, and the importance of leading with integrity. At no cost to attendees, the Institute will take place May 7 to May 12, 2016 at an off campus retreat center. The only requirement for attendance is you must be returning to UIC in the Fall Semester

    DEADLINE EXTENDED: Applications are due March 28, 2016.

  • Lecture and Lunch with 14th Ward Alderman Edward Burke, Mon. 10/17

    The Honors College is a proud cosponsor of the Future of Chicago lecture series, which is coordinated by the Political Science Department. This program brings current and former leaders to campus to discuss the current state and future of Chicago, and the Honors College offers students a chance to discuss with Alderman Edward Burke in a small-group lunch after his lecture on Monday 10/17.  The lecture is free and open to the public; The lunch is limited to 25 undergraduate students and RSVP is required.  Details are below.     Lecture and Lunch with 14th Ward Alderman Edward Burke, Monday 10/17, 12pm - 2pm

    Alderman Burke is the 14th Ward Alderman and represents part of the southwest side of Chicago.  He is the longest serving alderman in the city of Chicago and was named to the "100 Most Powerful Chicagoans" by Chicago Magazine.  As Chairman of the City Council Committee on Finance, Alderman Burke is responsible for all legislative matters pertaining to the city's finances, including municipal bonds, taxes and revenue matters.

    Lecture: "The Chicago City Council and the Future of Chicago", 12:00 - 12:50 pm in Lecture Center C1

    Lunch with the Alderman: 1:00 - 1:50 pm in 121 Burnham Hall.  RSVP for the lunch by noon on Thursday 10/13 at https://uofi.uic.edu/sb/sec/70030.

    All students are welcome to attend the lecture without RSVP’ing.  Lunch is limited to 25 undergraduate students and RSVP is required for lunch.  If max capacity is reached for lunch, students will be notified. Students who plan on attending the lunch are also expected to attend the lecture beforehand to be prepared to engage in discussion with the Alderman.

    Join us for a general information session about the new masters programs offered by the UIC Liautaud Graduate School of Business. The three new programs that will be highlighted are the One Year MBA program, the Master of Science in Business Analytics, and the Master of Science in Finance. This information session will start with a brief presentation from Admissions representatives and will follow up with an open Q&A with all Liautaud staff. Refreshments will be served.   • Literary Translator Mentorship Opportunities, Apply by 7/1

    The American Literary Translators Association

    Emerging Translator Mentorships

    The ALTA Mentorship Program is designed to facilitate and establish a close working relationship between an experienced translator and an emerging translator on a project selected by the emerging translator. The mentorship duration is one year, and the emerging translator is expected to choose a project that can be completed in a year’s time and will only be advised on that particular project.

    Applications will be accepted from June 1 - July 1, 2015. The selected mentees will be announced in August.

    2015-2016 Mentorships are available working from the following languages:

    - Catalan (prose or poetry), with mentor Ronald Puppo

    - French (prose only), with mentor Alyson Waters

    - Polish (prose or poetry), with mentor Bill Johnston

    Applications must be submitted online through our submission platform, and must include:

    CV A project proposal of no more than 1000 words. Projects must be reasonably expected to be completed within the scope of the 1-year mentorship. Proposals should include information about the original author and importance of the source text, as well as how the emerging translator would benefit from mentorship. A sample translation of up to 10 pages double spaced (prose or poetry), along with the corresponding source text.

    The programme is intended for Anglophone literary translators with promise rather than experience, who are at a stage in their professional careers when they would benefit from the opportunity to work closely with an experienced mentor over a six month period.

    Little Brothers – Friends of the Elderly is a national network of non-profit volunteer-based organizations committed to relieving isolation and loneliness among the elderly. We offer to people of goodwill the opportunity to join the elderly in friendship and celebration of life.

    Their motto, flowers before bread, expresses our philosophy that people need the special pleasures in life in addition to the basic necessities. We feel that love and dignity and beauty in life are as basic as physical needs.

  • London's Black and South Asian Communities: Politics, Culture, and History - Summer Study Abroad Program, Info Session, Thurs. 2/13

    The goal of this program is to encourage students to think in complex ways through comparative analysis about issues of race, gender justice, identity and community from England to the US. The course will survey London's culture and politics through the experiences of the African, Caribbean and South Asian descended communities. Additionally, it will focus on the history of British colonialism, migration, discrimination and the hybrid cultural and political formations that emerge in London over time. Through readings, films and lively interactions with London-based researchers, students will explore some of the following issues:

    • History of colonialism and anti-colonialism
    • Women's organizations and grassroots movements
    • Housing and immigration policies and patterns
    • Social construction of race, ethnicity and identity

    All Students will take London's Black and South Asian Communities: Politics, Culture and History for 6 credits. Undergraduate and Graduate students may apply.

  • McSweeney’s Student Short Story Contest, Due 8/31

    Apply to the first-ever McSweeney’s Student Short Story Contest, guest judged by an illustrious, soon-to-be-named writer.

    Contestants must be students (undergraduate or graduate) in the United States, and stories must be under 7,500 words, but that is, thankfully, where the rules end. The winner of the contest will receive $500 and their story will be published inMcSweeney’s 51, in August 2015. A few stories will be selected as honorable mentions, and the names of those stories, as well as the names of their authors, will also be printed in McSweeney’s 51.

    We will be accepting submissions from July 30 – August 31, 2014. To cover the cost and time of our small staff and our guest judge, submitters must pay an entrance fee of $55—but, get this, with your entrance fee, you also get a full year’s subscription (at a discount) to McSweeney’s Quarterly. Isn’t that a great deal?   • New Accelerated 12-month MBA Program at UIC College of Business Administration

    The UIC College of Business Administration is rolling out a new full-time Accelerated MBA program that can be completed in 12 months.  Unlike other programs, this degree is geared for students with relatively little experience (0-4 years) with the intent that they can couple an area of study outside of business with a degree that provides functional skills in finance, marketing or business analytics.  This program may be a good fit for current seniors who would find it beneficial to stay on campus an additional year to acquire a more direct path into the business world or obtain general management skills and knowledge that can benefit many careers paths. Students are able to complete the degree in a shortened time frame through rigorous daytime courses and extended semesters in the fall and spring.   • Nominations for UIC Woman of the Year, Due Mon. 7/28

    You have an opportunity to nominate a UIC faculty or staff member for the 2014 "Woman of the Year" Award sponsored by The Chancellor's Committee on the Status of Women (CCSW). Established in 1992, this annual award honors a UIC woman who has consistently worked on women's issues beyond the call of duty and who is an exemplary role model. Winners are honored with a reception officiated by the Chancellor and a cash award of $1,000. 

    The award criteria include providing service to women at UIC while on the job, responding to issues affecting women, and offering service to women through voluntarism and public support of women's programs. All UIC women employed by the University (including faculty, academic professionals or civil service with at least a 50% appointment) or retired faculty or staff who are still actively involved with women issues and/or service at UIC are eligible for the award. A committee of CCSW officers and former award winners will make the final selection from among the nominees.

  • Observe a Mock Medical School Interview at the Honors College, 3/10

    Professor Timothy Murphy from the UIC College of Medicine will conduct a mock medical school admissions interview in front of an audience to show an example of that important milestone in medical school admissions.  The first part of the session will include an interview as nearly identical to the actual interview as possible.  The second part of the session will be an open forum for questions about admissions interviews and the application process in general.  Students who attend will have the opportunity to hear typical interview questions, listen to Professor Murphy’s feedback and appraisal of the mock applicant, and ask questions following the interview.  All Honors College students interested in applying to medical school are welcome to attend.

    The event will take place in 121 Burnham Hall (Quiet Study Room) on March 10 from 4:00-5:00pm.

  • Possible Service Honors Activity with Disability Resource Center

    The Disability Resource Center is looking for an interested and committed Honors Student to work with a student who is blind in his Fall 2015 ECON 121: Principles of Macroeconomics course. The Honors Student would serve as the DRC student’s note taker and scribe throughout the fall semester.  A scribe assists with the visual and writing aspects of homework, in-class activities, and exams.  The DRC student will be responsible for training the scribe and informing what tasks are needed such as describing graphs, or writing down specific answers. 

    The responsibilities for this activity are as follows:

    -  Attend all classes as the student’s note taker and scribe for any in-class work that needs completion.

         o Class meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30-10:45 and Wednesdays from 1:00-1:50

    -  Meet with the student a couple of hours/week outside of class to help explain any notes and/or scribe homework assignments

    -  Scribe course exams with student throughout semester (2 midterms at 2.5 hours each and 1 final exam at 4 hours)

     

    The requirements for this activity are as follows:

    - Eligibility in the Honors College and approval of this activity by your Faculty Fellow

    - Familiarity with Macroeconomics – prefer someone who has taken ECON 121 before, especially with Professor William Rauscher

         o If you haven’t taken ECON 121 but will be in the future (including Fall 2015), you are not eligible for this activity.

  • Potential Honors Activity: Seeking Video Editor for Project Vida

    We are currently recruiting a student in the School of Art and Design with experience in video editing to work on a project creating video testominals addressing barriers to pre-exposure prophylaxis for HIV (PrEP).  Our team currently consists of three UIC medical students, one Medical School faculty member, and the staff at Project Vida, an HIV/AIDS education and direct services organization in Little Village. We have the expertise to recruit participants for the testimonials and guide testimonial content, but need to recruit a student interested in being primarily responsible for video editing. If desired, the student would be able to discuss receiving Honors Activity or Capstone credit with their Honors Advisor.  Interested students should contact Wesley Gibbert at wgibbe2@uic.edu.

    Since 2012, POV Hackathon has provided matchmaking and mentorship for visionary filmmakers and inventive technologists to "re-imagine the documentary for web" in a single weekend.

    POV Hackathon 9 will take place in Chicago the weekend of August 15-16, 2015, in partnership with Kartemquin Films, a collaborative center for documentary media makers who seek to foster a more engaged and empowered society, and The Chicago Innovation Exchange, the University of Chicago's new center to help scholars and entrepreneurs translate their ideas and new technologies into start-up businesses and products.

    Expect to be busy from the Saturday morning through Sunday evening. Hacking concludes on Sunday afternoon, but there will be a screening on Sunday evening, followed by a reception. All events take place at The Chicago Innovation Exchange, 1452 E 53rd Street Chicago, IL 60615.

  • Pre-Law Undergraduate Scholars Plus Program, Apply by Mon. 3/3

    Illinois Institute of Technology, IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law is sponsoring a Prelaw Undergraduate Scholars (PLUS) Program from June 1 through June 20, 2014.   The deadline to submit the application is Monday, March 3, 2014.
     
    The PLUS program is a unique and rigorous three-week experience for current college freshmen, sophomores or juniors interested in the legal profession.  Our goal is to provide students with a “taste” of the law school experience and introduce them to the admissions process.  Students will attend classes taught by IIT Chicago-Kent law professors, recognized as some of the most productive and accomplished law professors in the nation. 
     
    The program is designed to attract disadvantaged students and those from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups.  The program will cover the cost of tuition, room in a residence hall, required course materials and other expenses.  Participants are paid a stipend to offset some of their meal and other expenses.  The program does not pay for any transportation expenses.

    Programming Languages Mentoring Workshop 2016What is PLMW

    The Programming Languages Mentoring Workshop (PLMW) aims to encourage graduate students and senior undergraduate students to pursue careers in programming language research. The workshop brings together world leaders in programming languages research and teaching from academia and industry to provide (a) technical sessions on cutting­ edge PL research and (b) mentoring sessions on how to prepare for a research career. The workshop aims to engage students in a process of imagining how they might contribute to our research community. We especially encourage women and under-represented minority students to attend PLMW.

    After the resounding success of the first four Programming Languages Mentoring Workshops at POPL 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015, we announce the 5th SIGPLAN Programming Languages Mentoring Workshop, co­-located with POPL 2016. POPL is the ACM’s flagship conference for foundational aspects of programming languages, and its 43rd edition will take place in Florida, USA next year. PLMW will be held immediately before POPL 2016, on Tuesday, January 19. We hope that participants will stay through the entire conference.

    Scholarship applications

    PLMW sponsors have generously donated scholarship funds for qualified students to attend PLMW. These scholarships should cover reasonable expenses (airfare, hotel, and registration fees) for attendance at both the workshop and the POPL conference. Students attending this year will get one year free student membership of SIGPLAN, unless they prefer to opt out during their application. The workshop registration is open to all. Students with alternative sources of funding are welcome as well.

  • Prop Thtr Film Festival/Competition

    In conjunction with its Prop-Up Prop campaign, Prop Thtr is proud to announce the first event of its new bi-annual original film competition series, March Missed Connections: A 48-Hour Film Festival (MMCFF).

    Open to all ages and levels of skill, registration for Prop’s MMCFF begins today and will remain open through 11:59 PM CT March 9th. For a meager entry fee of $20 and simple registration, at the newly redesigned Prop Thtr website (http://www.propthtr.org/film-festival.html), anyone, individual or group, may secure themselves a seat in the competition and screening!

    The catch? Contestants’ films will be required to both draw their inspiration from a Missed Connection posting taken from a local source as well as feature a previously selected prop. Both the inspiration and prop assignments will be sent to registered teams, by e-mail, the evening of Friday, March 11th. As if things weren’t interesting enough; from the moment teams receive their assignment, the clock will be ticking! All films will be due, uploaded to YouTube, two days later moments before the stroke of midnight: 11:59 PM CT on Sunday, March 13th

    Then what happens? ... A lot!

    Each film will be screened by a panel of judges and critiqued against a standard criterion. 2 weeks later, on Friday March 25th & Saturday March 26th at 7 PM CT, Prop Thtr will roll out the red carpet for filmmakers, friends and family alike at the MMCFF screening festival during which all films will be premiered. Hosted at Prop’s home, 3502 N. Elston Ave., the MMCFF will offer filmmakers the chance to see their name in lights, have their filmed screened in 60+ seat houses two nights in a row, and a unique opportunity to network with other theatre and film artists in attendance as we work to break down the barriers between realms.

    To mark the occasion the second, Saturday March 26th will with an awards ceremony honoring our filmmakers with awards for Best Picture, Director, Actor and many more as voted upon by our illustrious panel of judges. Those who are fortunate enough to walk away winners the evening of Saturday, March ,will not only retain the bragging rights tied to their awards but will also receive surprises from new 26th neighborhood favorites and longtime staples.

    After the festival ends, all films will remain posted to the Prop Thtr YouTube channel for unlimited viewing by Prop audience members around the world. Additionally, the top films and their creators will also be honored with a dedicated profile and film page on the Prop Thtr website. In an effort to foster growth and as a courtesy to all our filmmakers, each team will receive formal feedback following the festival from judges offering their unique insight and interpretations.

    Announcing the 1st Annual Regenerative Medicine Summer School

    Objective:

    • To provide national and regional students with a week-long didactic and experiential learning experience addressing science and engineering related to the multidisciplinary field of regenerative medicine.

    Target Audience:

    • Undergraduates, enrolled in a science or engineering program that will have

    completed their 3rd year of study; exceptional candidates who will have completed their 2nd year of undergraduate study will be considered.

    Venue:

    • McGowan Institute-Pittsburgh, PA

    • July 14-18, 2014 o Students will be provided accommodations in a University of Pittsburgh dormitory for the week (shared student suites)

    o Please plan to arrive on July 13th and depart on July 19th

    Tuition: $695 includes room, board, and select social and networking events

    Applications for the 2014 Regenerative Medicine Summer School will be accepted starting January 1, 2014. The deadline for submitting the application and all required documentation is April.18th, 2014. Applicants will be notified by the end of April (via email) if they are selected as a final candidate. At that time, additional information and forms will be required to complete the application process. Final admission decisions will be made by May 15, 2014 and accepted students will be notified by letter.

    The McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh announces its Second Annual Regenerative Medicine Summer School June 1 – 5, 2015.

    The Donald and Leah Riddle Prize is awarded each year at Commencement to an outstanding graduating senior regardless of major field. The award is based on academic excellence and leadership. The winner receives a bronze medallion and a $1,000 cash prize. The Riddle Prize is made each year in recognition of the former UIC Chancellor Donald Riddle and his wife Leah and honors the Riddles' contribution to the campus. The 2015 application is open until 27 March 2015.
