London’s Black and South Asian Communities: Politics, Culture and History

Program Description: The goal of this program is to encourage students to think in complex ways through comparative analysis about issues of race, gender justice, identity and community from England to the US. The course will survey London's culture and politics through the experiences of the African, Caribbean and South Asian descended communities. Additionally, it will focus on the history of British colonialism, migration, discrimination and the hybrid cultural and political formations that emerge in London over time. Through readings, films and lively interactions with London-based researchers, students will explore some of the following issues:
- History of colonialism and anti-colonialism
- Women's organizations and grassroots movements
- Housing and immigration policies and patterns
- Social construction of race, ethnicity and identity
Courses: All Students will take London's Black and South Asian Communities: Politics, Culture and History for 6 credits. Undergraduate and Graduate students may apply.
Housing/Meals: Students will be housed in residence halls within walking distance of many central London attractions and excellent public transportation close by.
Eligibility: UIC students who have established an overall UIC GPA of 2.5/4.0 with at least 36 hours completed at the time of the application. Asian and African American studies majors are encouraged to apply, but no specific major is required.

- Several excursions and tours to different London neighborhoods and museum
- Guest lectures and conversations with local scholars, artist and activist
- Led by UIC professor Barbara Ransby, Department of African Ameri-can Studies and History
Cost: Program fee of $4,830 will include tuition, housing in central Lon-don and field trips. Additional expenses include: airfare, meals and personal expenses.
This program may be cancelled if minimum enrollment is not met. Financial Aid may be applied, Scholarships available! Final deadline: March 21, 2014
