  The Council on Legal Education Opportunity, Inc.’s "CLEO Legally Inspired Cohort" (CLIC) is a highly-competitive pilot program to identify, recruit, and train 20 diverse law school applicants who possess both the academic aptitude and leadership skills to attend one of four CLEO partner law schools in supportive teams of five. After successfully completing CLEO's Pre-Law Summer Institute, each CLIC team will attend a designated partner law school together.

  This exciting new program will give diverse students one more avenue to law school. Twenty of the 40 pre-law summer institute participants will be selected to take part in this new program.  After the summer institute, five each of the CLIC participants will attend the four law schools together as a cohort.

  Additionally because of their matriculation at the CLEO partner law school, CLIC Scholars will:

  Receive a $1000 book award       

  Have mentors and legal community support

  This is a great time to begin plan for your Study Abroad, make scholarship applications, and connect with family and friends around crowdfunding.  There are two scholarships Kathryn want you to know about and she also wanted to share a couple of tips for fundraising.  The application for the Paris program is attached and also available online. 

   

  Due on January 11, 2017:

  Fund for Education Abroad.  This is for non-traditional locations for study abroad in programs that are both immersive and rigorous.  This fits this program (although Paris is traditional) because it is immersive, rigorous and non-traditional in that students are interning within the social services.  Emphasize that an internship in the social services is a unique and non-traditional destination for studies in France.  It is important to note that this scholarship only supports academically rigorous and immersive study abroad programs.

  Tips for fundraising:

  Apply for scholarships,  use your financial aid, and use crowdfunding through a site or in person.  Be specific, describe your program and costs, and request airline miles donations for flights; miles all now have expiration dates so someone may share miles they cannot use.  

   

  Steps to take in no specific order to have an early application for this program:

  1)  Attend a First Step at Study Abroad  if you have not already

  2)  Meet with Irina Krymova at Study Abroad

  3)  Attend a Program Presentation with Kathryn and have an individual meeting with Kathryn 

  4)  Begin applying for scholarships at the Special Scholarships Office and seek others outside of UIC

  Going abroad….The British scholarships, Fulbright Fellowships and other post graduate opportunities can offer you the chance to realize your dreams abroad! If you are interested in going abroad in fall 2016, start asking questions and exploring your options now. 

  The British scholarships include the Rhodes, Marshall, Gates Cambridge and Mitchell. These awards give you the opportunity to study at a British university for 1-4 years. Strong candidates typically have a 3.7 GPA or higher, a record of service and leadership, and strong academic qualifications for what they are proposing to study in the UK. The British scholarships have a campus deadline of April 30. 

  Post-graduate opportunities…Fulbright offers the opportunity to teach or do research/study abroad. There is no GPA cutoff.   Humanity in Action:

  The Humanity in Action Fellowship brings together international groups of Fellows to study minority rights and produce original research exploring how and why individuals and societies, past and present, have resisted intolerance and protected democratic values. Separate programs take place for five weeks every summer in Amsterdam, Atlanta, Berlin, Copenhagen, Paris, and Warsaw.  Fellows only pay the cost of airfare to their host country; students can apply while in college or soon afterwards.

  The American Literary Translators Association

  Emerging Translator Mentorships

  The ALTA Mentorship Program is designed to facilitate and establish a close working relationship between an experienced translator and an emerging translator on a project selected by the emerging translator. The mentorship duration is one year, and the emerging translator is expected to choose a project that can be completed in a year’s time and will only be advised on that particular project.

  Applications will be accepted from June 1 - July 1, 2015. The selected mentees will be announced in August.

  2015-2016 Mentorships are available working from the following languages:

  - Catalan (prose or poetry), with mentor Ronald Puppo

  - French (prose only), with mentor Alyson Waters

  - Polish (prose or poetry), with mentor Bill Johnston

  Applications must be submitted online through our submission platform, and must include:

  CV A project proposal of no more than 1000 words. Projects must be reasonably expected to be completed within the scope of the 1-year mentorship. Proposals should include information about the original author and importance of the source text, as well as how the emerging translator would benefit from mentorship.   The 2017 Woodrow Wilson Teaching Fellowship competition is under way, with two more application deadlines available for interested candidates: November 29 and January 23.

  As many of you know, the WW Teaching Fellowships offer intensive master’s-level teacher preparation, including a year of classroom experience, for exceptionally qualified candidates. Eligible applicants may be graduating seniors or recent grads/alumni; they should have a commitment to teaching in the urban and rural schools that most often lack strong STEM teachers; and they must have completed STEM degrees.

  The Fellowships are available this year in Georgia and New Jersey (with more states now in the works). Fellows attend a partner institution in one of these states and commit to teach for three years in the same state, but they need not be from that state. Fellows receive a generous stipend ($30,000 or more, depending on location) to complete the master’s program. Throughout their three-year teaching commitment, they continue to receive mentoring and support from both their universities and their schools.
