Bridging the Gap: Emerging Health Issues in Underrepresented Minorities
Annual Invitation for the Undergraduate College Health Sciences Competition
Dear Student,
Are you interested in a health-related field? We cordially invite you to participate in the first annual Bridging the Gap: Emerging Health Issues in Underrepresented Minorities-Undergraduate College Health Sciences Competition. You will compete against other undergraduate college students in the City of Chicago for cash prizes.
Bridging the Gap is an annual event focused on emerging health issues in minority communities; primarily Latino and African-American populations. Its aim is to educate both healthcare providers and the community on health issues prevalent in these minority communities. This year the Bridging the Gap symposium will be on October 14, 2017 at UIC’s Student Center West.
To enter the competition, you will send an abstract of 250 words or less by September 15, 2017 to aaldab1@uic.edu detailing your research project on health disparities. The research topic can be from any discipline, as long it addresses “bridging the gap” in a health-related issue facing disadvantaged groups; for example, on access to healthcare or disease outcomes. Abstracts will be evaluated based on the innovation of the ideas and how well the ideas are conveyed (quality of writing, style, and clarity).
All submitters of abstracts will be invited to the Bridging the Gap symposium. Ten abstracts will be chosen to present it as a poster and provide a brief two-minute presentation for the poster judges at the symposium on October 14, 2017. The top three winners will each receive a cash prize (1st: $500, 2nd: $300; 3rd: $200). We will announce the winners during the symposium luncheon.
We look forward to your participation.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact Arlin at aaldab1@uic.edu.
Sincerely,
