  Course Overview: Do you want to make a sustainability impact at UIC while getting work experience?   AANAPISI Educational Employment Grant

  In memory of Stone and Holt Weeks, following their tragic deaths in 2009, NPR and The Washington Post have partnered to give a promising individual the opportunity to launch a career in journalism. This fellowship consists of two sessions, 12 weeks at The Washington Post and 12 weeks at NPR, with training in reporting for print, radio and the web.

  The Fellowship is both educational and experiential. At NPR, the Fellow is trained in radio and digital production and report on the National, Washington or Business desk. The Washington Post session gives Fellow experience with publishing original stories and other news content. At both organizations, the Fellow has individual sessions with leading journalists and receive guidance on the most important skills of the trade.

  The Stone and Holt Weeks Fellow learns about the role of journalism in "making the world a better place." This Fellowship offers a broad exposure to the relationship between journalism and public education, citizenship, social change and democracy, and will learn that a major aim of journalism, as expressed a century ago by author Finley Peter Dunne, is "to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable."

  Candidate Qualifications
  Anyone who will have received a bachelor's degree by July 15 is eligible to apply for the Fellowship. Individuals with additional education and experience are welcome to apply. While a demonstrated appetite for journalism is desired, there is no specific requirement for a journalism degree or experience as a journalist.

  Application Process
  Applications must be postmarked by April 30. Finalists will be notified in early June and invited to travel to Washington, D.C., for an interview with the fellowship committee. Travel costs for the interview will be paid by NPR and The Washington Post. The selected candidate will be notified by the end of June and asked to confirm his or her commitment early in July. The fellowship begins after Labor Day.

  What you'll do: Get an up-close look at how the court-system works and see what it's like to be a litigator. As a Courtroom Observer (the official title for our interns), you will follow court proceedings in a Cook County courtroom, and use our technology platform to update attorneys on case progress. This is an essential role to help us us demonstrate our product to the legal community. 

  Who we are looking for: Undergrad and recent grads that are considering law careers, who are interested in learning about the court system. Available to work 9am-12:30pm three days per week (M-F) or more. You should have reliable transportation to get to the Daley Center (Clark and Randolph in the Loop) and be able to carry yourself in a professional manner in a courtroom environment. 

  We offer paid training (we will give you a crash course in the legal system, knowledge you won't learn in law school), and ongoing career development sessions with practicing attorneys.

  About SRCD: SRCD is a multidisciplinary, not-for-profit, professional association with a membership of approximately 6,000 researchers, practitioners, and child development professionals from over 50 countries. It was established in 1933 by the National Research Council of the National Academy of Sciences. The Society’s goals are to promote multidisciplinary research in the field of child development, foster the exchange of information among scientists and other professionals in various disciplines, and encourage applications of research findings to improve the lives of children and families. SRCD publishes the premier journal in the field, Child Development, as well as Child Development Perspectives, Monographs of the Society for Research in Child Development, and the Social Policy Report. The internship will be hosted by SRCD’s Office for Policy and Communications, which is located in Washington, DC.

  Intern Responsibilities: The SRCD Policy Intern would assist staff with a number of projects, including helping with these projects: Preparation of Policy Update, a monthly e-newsletter sent to SRCD members focusing on federal policy developments related to children and families

  Coordination of activities for the University-Based Child and Family Policy Consortium (a collaboration of approximately 35 universities with child and family policy programs) including contributing to the preparation of a quarterly e-newsletter and assisting in conducting and summarizing a survey of program directors to help identify priorities for the consortium

  Preparation of a summary of career- and training-related resources (that have already been gathered) for graduate students and early career scholars interested in careers focusing on policy-related child development research

  Qualifications: The SRCD office in Washington is recruiting an advanced undergraduate student who has had coursework related to child development and public policy. This person will need strong interpersonal, time management and research skills and must demonstrate computer proficiency in Microsoft Office applications. He/she will also need to be both flexible and proactive in his/her approach to work, and comfortable working independently and collaboratively within a small office environment. The ideal candidate will have had experience in conducting research, including developing and collecting data from questionnaires or surveys; coursework in research design and methodology; and some experience with data analysis.

  Compensation: The SRCD Policy Intern would be paid $12/hour. The internship entails 16 hours of paid work each week. The intern’s work schedule would be flexible and would be developed in conjunction with SRCD staff to accommodate his/her other summer commitments.

  We are looking for a volunteer interns to join our research team in assisting with research projects at the Feinberg School of Medicine in the Department of Medical Social Sciences at Northwestern University. The research the interns would be assisting with is part of the Biobehavioral Mechanisms and Health Outcomes Program.  The research focus is to understand advanced care disparities of Hispanic cancer patients and their informal caregivers through structured interviews which capture cancer care and treatment understanding, cultural beliefs and psychosocial experiences to understand and address disparities.

  PROGRAM BENEFITS

  “The CLS Program is fully funded from start to finish. From the time you step foot out the door to the time you arrive home, the CLS Program covers many of the costs of participating in its  overseas institutes, including:-Intensive overseas group based language courses (20+ hours per week)-Room and board, often with a host family-A full cultural program-Host community language partners-Domestic and international airfare

  Participants receive a small stipend to cover incidental expenses and meals not provided by the program. Upon completion of the program, participants also receive a certified American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) score.”

  The CLS program offers a year’s worth of graded credit that you can apply to your college career.

  PROGRAM STRUCTURE

  “CLS Program institutes cover approximately one academic year of university-level language coursework during an eight- to ten-week program and are designed to meet the needs of students from a variety of language levels and backgrounds. Formal classroom language instruction is provided for a minimum of 20 hours per week. Extracurricular activities are designed to supplement the formal curriculum, including regular one-on-one meetings with native speaker language partners for conversational practice, as well as cultural activities and excursions designed to expand students’ understanding of the history, politics, culture and daily life of their host country.”
