• Summer Diabetes Research Program, Apply by 1/15

  The UIC Honors College, in partnership with the UIC Department of Surgery and the Department of Bioengineering, is happy to announce a new Summer Research Program. The Summer Diabetes Research Program at UIC is a ten-week summer internship for undergraduates with a focus on diabetes research.  Sponosored by the NIH NIDDK R25 training program, this program will pair students with researchers in diabetes-related projects, such as islet transplantation, islet physiology, tissue engineering, beta-cell proliferation, microfluidic and nanotechnology technology, biological imaging, microencapsulation, and many other topics.  Students will also attend seminar-based lectures, conduct individual research, and experience a clinical component.

  Students will be compensated with a $3,000 stipend over the course of the ten-week program. 

  The application is now available at http://www.honors.uic.edu/SDR/.  The deadline for submission is January 15, 2017.  The application includes essays, two letters of recommendation, and an official transcript.

  This is a great time to begin plan for your Study Abroad, make scholarship applications, and connect with family and friends around crowdfunding.  There are two scholarships Kathryn want you to know about and she also wanted to share a couple of tips for fundraising.  The application for the Paris program is attached and also available online. 

   

  Due on January 11, 2017:

  Fund for Education Abroad.  This is for non-traditional locations for study abroad in programs that are both immersive and rigorous.  This fits this program (although Paris is traditional) because it is immersive, rigorous and non-traditional in that students are interning within the social services.  Emphasize that an internship in the social services is a unique and non-traditional destination for studies in France.  It is important to note that this scholarship only supports academically rigorous and immersive study abroad programs.

  Tips for fundraising:

  Apply for scholarships,  use your financial aid, and use crowdfunding through a site or in person.  Be specific, describe your program and costs, and request airline miles donations for flights; miles all now have expiration dates so someone may share miles they cannot use.

  We are looking for a volunteer intern to join our research team in assisting with a research project at the Feinberg School of Medicine in the Department of Medical Social Sciences at Northwestern University.   The Gene Siskel Film Centers annual Black Harvest Film Festival is the Midwests largest festival of the black experience on film. The intern will have the opportunity to research and gather marketing information via the internet, Black Harvest Community Council, and other resources. They will assist in contacting individuals, organizations, and media to assist in bringing more visibility to the festival. Working on mailings and assisting to develop and maintain targeted community mailing lists. Disseminating information about events through email, phone, and social media. Assisting with opening and closing nights, and other events as-needed. Assisting with gathering of marketing data, press coverage, and other information for final report. General office work may also include answering phones and other administrative duties.

  Ideal candidates would be students in a public relations/marketing program, film studies, communications, and Black/African-American Studies. The candidate must be detail-oriented and possess superior writing skills. A strong work ethic and demonstrated ability to interact well with the public, filmmakers, and colleagues is strongly desired.

  Length of Program: mid/late-June to mid-September
  Compensation: Unpaid

  Hours: 10:00 am-4:00 pm, Monday-Friday plus possible evening/weekend hours
