    April 19th, 2014. 10am to 6pm.
The best dance party you've ever been to.

Dance Marathon at UIC (DMUIC) made it's debut last year as a philanthropic endeavor supporting local children's hospitals in fighting pediatric illness. This year, same 8 hours, more entertainment, great themes with each hour, more food, more drinks, more fun! As last year, the families and kids who we are directly benefiting will be at the event to share their stories, inspire you, and of course, meet and play with all of you!

When you register, you gain access to DonorDrive which is a fundraising platform filled with template emails, links, and social tabs to help you raise as much as possible with minimal effort. With just a few clicks, you can notify everyone you know of what you're doing and get tons of support! The participant minimum is the same as last year, $30.

IGNITE will help participants gain insight into the values, communication, and general leadership skills necessary for positive involvement on campus.

IGNITE mentors aid in the development of participants, while continuing to grow their own leadership skills. Mentors will work in pairs to facilitate discussions and personal growth in a small group of IGNITE participants. It is an expectation that mentors will share their knowledge, skills, and perspectives as leaders on campus to foster the growth of underclassmen students.

What are the requirements to serve as an IGNITE mentor?

    • Any currently enrolled UIC junior or senior undergraduate student is eligible to apply.
    • Mentors must commit to each of the nine IGNITE sessions on Monday nights from 3:45 PM - 6 PM starting September 29 and ending on November 24.

    • Mentors must attend Catalyst LeaderShape on Saturday, September 27 from 9 AM - 5 PM.

  • Student Campus Dialogue on Community Violence, Tues. 4/15

The Institute for Policy and Civic Engagement (IPCE) presents:

Student Campus Dialogues - Community Violence

Please attend IPCE's Student Campus Dialogue where students and the university community gather to discuss and deliberate on the civic issues most important to them. This is the third installment of the dialogue series.

Most urban children, by the time they enter high school, have seen the use of weapons, guns or other acts of violence against people in their neighborhood or school. Community violence (CV) refers to exposure, as a witness or through experience. In communities with high rates of community violence, many families experience chronic stress and worry because of the high prevalence of this issue.

In 2011, more than 700,000 young people aged 10-24 years were treated in emergency departments for nonfatal injuries sustained from assaults.

Is it our responsibility to do something about community violence?

What should students, parents, educators, and community leaders be doing to alleviate this issue?

Where:           UIC Student Center East Room 613
    When:             Tuesday, April 15, 2014
    Time:             11:00 A.M. - 1:00 P.M.

    Lunch will be provided!

IPCE is committed to transforming democracy by creating a more fully engaged community with more effective leaders. For more information, e-mail, mahmed43@uic.edu or visit IPCE's website at www.ipce.uic.edu.

  • Town Hall Meeting: Strategic Plan for Increasing Undergraduate Success, Fri. 4/11

Please attend the Town Hall Meeting on the Strategic Plan for Increasing Undergraduate Success on Fri. 4/11!

Dear UIC Students, Faculty, and Staff Members:

We are delighted to present the UIC Strategic Plan for Increasing Undergraduate Success: Task Force Recommendations (prefaced with an introductory summary) for campus comment and review. You can download the entire document—all of the final task force recommendations and rationale as submitted--here (19 mb), or you can download it in smaller parts here.

You might recall that a preliminary draft of the plan was presented to the campus for comment in October 2012. From February through November 2013, eight task forces—comprising more than 200 faculty, staff, and students —met regularly to discuss how the campus might improve our efforts to support student success in a variety of areas: Data Analysis and Assessment, Targeted First-Year Curriculum, Support for Student Learning, Faculty Engagement, Advising, Financing College, Campus Life, and Pre-matriculation Issues. Throughout the process, there has been campus input in multiple ways. The entire campus was invited to nominate people to serve on one of the eight task forces, and to provide feedback at town hall meetings, online, and by email. The college deans and other campus administrators were also asked to nominate individuals and students. As a result, hundreds of faculty, staff, and students were invited to serve on the task forces.

Please take the time now to read the recommendations and provide commentary either by submitting a comment through the web tool (at studentsuccess.uic.edu) or by attending a town hall meeting on Friday, April 11, from noon to 2:00 p.m. (Illinois Rooms A and B, Student Center East), which will be transcribed. We will be grateful for large or small comments.

All of your feedback will be attached to the document as an appendix and presented to Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Provost Lon Kaufman and Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Barbara Henley. The Vice Chancellors will then develop a charge for the campus to implement the plan, with transparency and campus-wide participation.

We thank everyone for supporting this important strategic planning initiative. Much work lies ahead for everyone on campus. Thank you in advance for joining us in embracing that challenge. Your work will change many lives, the lives of not only our undergraduates, but also their families, their communities, our university, and our city.

    Sincerely,

    Bette L. Bottoms
Vice Provost for Undergraduate Affairs &
    Dean of the Honors College,
    Professor of Psychology

    What is the Fulbright grant?

The Fulbright Scholarship sends students abroad to do a program of study or research in one of around 140 countries OR to teach English for a year in one of over 50 countries. You must have your bachelor's degree before you leave, but you can apply at any point in your life once you have that first degree. For a Fulbright Full Grant you put together a proposal of study or research that would take 10-12 months to perform. Some countries require you to know the language well, others are flexible on language requirements. Programs of study can include classes, research projects, library work, observations, training in the creative arts, surveys, lab work - in short, anything that would help you study or learn more about your proposed topic.

Tell me more about the teaching grants...

Fulbright also offers students the chance to apply to teach English.  In some countries you would teach in a high school, in others elementary and in others at the college level. Language requirements vary from country to country. Many countries have no language requirement. The English Teaching Assistants (ETA) are generally students who have some teaching experience, and believe that the ETA experience will help to prepare them for what they are doing in the future.

    Why should I consider it?
The Fulbright name is well respected in the U.S. and beyond. Past scholars have considered it an experience of a lifetime. They learn about new cultures or deepen their knowledge of one they already were acquainted with. They make new friends and engage in an in-depth teaching or learning experience that gives them depth of knowledge and skills in their chosen field, and helps set the stage for greater independence in their next career move. They develop a more sophisticated understanding of their host country, the U.S. and themselves.

    Questions?

OSSP staff welcome questions from students and advisors about the Fulbright. Please direct questions about the full grant to Beth Powers at bpowers@uic.edu; questions about the teaching assistantships to Sheena Miller, sheena@uic.edu; and questions about graduate students applying to Marie Khan at mkhanj@uic.edu

  • "Nature's Cure: Do Plants Benefit Oral Health?" Presentation with Faculty Fellow in Dentistry Dr. Wu, Wed. 4/23

Nature's Cure: Do Plants Benefit Oral Health? by Dr. Christine Wu, Lunch and Learn Presentation
Wednesday, April 23: 12:30 - 1:30 PM in Lecture Hall South

In recent years, much attention has been focused on research and education related to the identification of food components, and development of food products with disease preventing and health promoting benefits, i.e. the "functional foods".  Numerous naturally occuring components in foods and vegetables have been shown to promote health and reduce risks for many common diseases.  Despite these advances, the general public seems less aware of foods that promote oral health.

Plants including fruits and vegetables contain biologically active phytochemicals that suppress oral bacteria associated with caries, periodontal disease, and other oral diseases.  The presentation will include data obtained from laboratory and human studies demonstrating how selected plant-based food/beverages and plant-derived compounds may help reduce oral malodor, dental plaque formation, acid production, strengthen dental hard tissue, and protect tooth enamel and dentin from demineralization.  The added oral health benefits of plans will positively contribute to a person's overall health and wellbeing.
