  The Gene Siskel Film Centers annual Black Harvest Film Festival is the Midwests largest festival of the black experience on film. The intern will have the opportunity to research and gather marketing information via the internet, Black Harvest Community Council, and other resources.   The National Cancer Institute’s (NCI) Cancer Systems Biology Consortium and Physical Sciences in Oncology Network are offering rising Junior and Senior undergraduates with outstanding research potential the opportunity to work closely with faculty mentors from NCI-supported institutions for an 8-week summer fellowship. The 2017 summer research program is designed specifically for students to gain experience in the interdisciplinary fields of systems biology and physical oncology. We’ll be partnering with the Illinois Humanities Council and the Community Media Workshop for an upcoming project and we’ve got a slot open for a motivated young artist interested in illustration and media.   This is both a paid and educational position. Our intern will have the opportunity to work one-on-one with professional journalists and illustrators to create a well-reported, engaging, relevant piece of illustrated journalism for “Reporting Back: New Perspectives from Communities.”

  This will be an exciting learning experience with a highly visible final project. We’ll encourage our young artist to pursue a story thread that interests him or her, according to project guidelines. Our candidate will help to write, research, report, and illustrate the story, with the guidance of Illustrated Press mentors.

  • Working with Illustrated Press staff to conceptualize a theme related to an issue of importance to communities on the South and West sides of Chicago (see “The Project”).

  The Fine Print:

Interns will have the opportunity to learn laboratory and critical thinking skills while immersed in research labs under the supervision of SCI faculty members.

  Three intern positions are located at the School of Medicine campus in Springfield. The fourth position is located at the SIU Carbondale campus.

  “The internships provide successful candidates with daily hands-on experience in our active cancer research labs and hopefully will further strengthen their interests in biomedical research and medicine, including cancer research,” said Dr. Donald S. Torry, professor and chair of the Department of Medical Microbiology, Immunology and Cell Biology.

  Qualified individuals will have completed their freshman year of college by June 2015 and not have graduated from college prior to June 2015.

  Applicants should submit a current college transcript, a résumé and two letters of reference from instructors, along with a personal statement letter describing current studies, activities and future goals. The paid internships are awarded on a competitive basis.

  Interns are a vital component of our staff, we offer several project-based internships during three internship sessions (summer/fall/spring). The internship program requires a commitment of 14-21 hours a week for 3 to 9 months (a 9 month internship is preferred, but a minimum commitment of 3 months is required).
