  • Pumpkin Carving Evening with HCAB! (10/29)

  • Publications Release Party, Wed. 4/13

    Join us in celebrating the release of the latest edition of each of the Honors College student-run publications at the annual Publication Release Party!  

    The Publication Release Party will be held on Wednesday, April 13 from 4 – 5:30 pm in the Honors College Student Lounge (Room 109 Burnham Hall).  The newest edition of each of the Honors College publications will be available, including:

    The Ampersand, the official student-run Honors College newsletter

    The Asterisk, a political satire newsletter

    The Journal for Pre-Health Affiliated Students, a journal focused on topics related to the health professions

    Red Shoes Review, a literary and arts magazine

    UIC OneWorld, a social justice and global affairs magazine

    The Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research Journal, an online open-access undergraduate research journal

    Professor Peyankov will be interviewed by Professor Emeritus David Sokol. Yasen Peyankov is a Steppenwolf Ensemble member and co-founder of the European Repertory Company and made his Broadway debut in Superior Donuts in 2009. His film and television credits include A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas, Contagion, Transformer 3, Crime Fiction, The Company, The Mob Doctor, The Beast, Gifted Hands, Karen Sisco, Alias, The Practice, The Unit, Numb3rs among others.

  • Pediatric Dentistry Professor Visit to JST and Cutie the Cat’s Office Hours, Thurs. 2/27

    Professor Christine Wu from Pediatric Dentistry will be visiting JST this Thursday 2/25, hosted by Faculty-In-Residence and Associate Dean Chang! This is a personal encounter--just come and chat! You don't need to be interested in dentistry. 

    Dean Chang will be having dinner with Professor Wu at the JST cafeteria around 7pm.  Any students are welcome to join -- just pull up a chair and sit down!

    Around 8pm, Professor Wu will move to Dean Chang's apartment (C226) for Cutie the Cat's Office Hours.  Stop by to say hi, chat, and have a (now well-received) cup of hot fruit tea and Frango chocolates :)

  • OSSP: Graduate Fellowships Info Session for Juniors, Tues. 4/14

    Are you interested in studying or teaching abroad after graduating? Planning on graduate study in the U.S.? Not sure what your options are? Attend an information session to learn more! 

    Going abroad….The British scholarships, Fulbright Fellowships and other post graduate opportunities can offer you the chance to realize your dreams abroad! If you are interested in going abroad in fall 2016, start asking questions and exploring your options now. 

    The British scholarships include the Rhodes, Marshall, Gates Cambridge and Mitchell. These awards give you the opportunity to study at a British university for 1-4 years. Strong candidates typically have a 3.7 GPA or higher, a record of service and leadership, and strong academic qualifications for what they are proposing to study in the UK. The British scholarships have a campus deadline of April 30. 

    Post-graduate opportunities…Fulbright offers the opportunity to teach or do research/study abroad. There is no GPA cutoff. Other opportunities such as the NSF Graduate Fellowship, JET program for teaching English in Japan or Illinois Legislative Internship provide myriad opportunities for post-baccalaureate education and growth. Join us at one of the following sessions to learn more about these opportunities.

  • Open Office Hours for Capstone Questions, Wed. 3/9

    Capstone Crisis? Open Office Hours for Help

    If you're planning to graduate this semester and have any problem you think will interfere with the completion of your capstone project on schedule, please feel free to discuss the matter with Associate Dean Timothy Murphy during his open office hours Wednesday March 9, 10 am - 2 pm in Burnham 120. No appointment is necessary, and Dr. Murphy will treat the discussions as confidential.  Students who are unavailable during these times are welcome to email Dr. Murphy directly (tmurphy@uic.edu) to arrange a time for discussion.

  • Observe a Medical School Mock Interview - Tues 9/19, 4pm

  • NSF/Biology Research Program for 1st and 2nd year students, Fri. 10/30

    Attention all freshmen and sophomores majoring in Biological Sciences:

    Are you interested in getting involved in research in the biological sciences? There will be an organizational meeting for the NSF/Biology/Capstone Program on Friday, October 30 at 3:30 p.m. in the Quiet Study Room (BH 121). The meeting will include more details about the program and a dozen faculty members from the department will be present to briefly describe their research programs and interests. The presentations are expected to last a total of approximately 2 hours.

    This program offers a two-and-a-half-year participation in biology research on campus and provides one way that Honors College students can fulfill their Capstone requirements. Students participating in the NSF/Biology/Capstone Program are associated with a research group in the Department of Biological Sciences and conduct experiments in ongoing research projects sponsored by the National Science Foundation.

    Come listen to Scott Dikkers, a founding editor of The Onion, tell the tale of his early struggles in the comedy business and how he ultimately got The Onion off the ground. As a farm boy with little education, he went from being a starry-eyed kid whose dream was to be published in his high-school newspaper to becoming an improbable 20-something business leader who founded the world's first humor website and headed up The Onion's growth into a worldwide brand and household name. Dikkers will share his own pitfalls and “lessons learned” to help students who are interested in finding their own path to creative leadership.
     
    About Scott Dikkers:
    Scott Dikkers is the founding editor of The Onion, and its longest-serving editor-in-chief. He developed its now-famous news parody format and launched it as the world's fi­rst humor website in 1996. Ranked by Time Magazine as one of the world’s top 50 “Digital Elite,” Scott is also the creator of the successful entertainment website The AV Club and author of several New York Times bestsellers, including "Our Dumb Century, "Our Dumb World" and "I Went to College and it was okay."

    Board President Preckwinkle will be speaking on the subject of the "Reform of Cook County Government" Wednesday, November 12, from 12-12:50 in Lecture Center F3 as part of the "Future of Chicago" lecture series.     The Honors College is a proud cosponsor of the Future of Chicago lecture series, which is coordinated by the Political Science Department. This program brings current and former leaders to campus to discuss the current state and future of Chicago, and the Honors College offers students a chance to discuss with Alderman Edward Burke in a small-group lunch after his lecture on Monday 10/17.  The lecture is free and open to the public; The lunch is limited to 25 undergraduate students and RSVP is required.  Details are below.     Lecture and Lunch with 14th Ward Alderman Edward Burke, Monday 10/17, 12pm - 2pm

    Alderman Burke is the 14th Ward Alderman and represents part of the southwest side of Chicago.  He is the longest serving alderman in the city of Chicago and was named to the "100 Most Powerful Chicagoans" by Chicago Magazine.  As Chairman of the City Council Committee on Finance, Alderman Burke is responsible for all legislative matters pertaining to the city's finances, including municipal bonds, taxes and revenue matters.

    Lecture: "The Chicago City Council and the Future of Chicago", 12:00 - 12:50 pm in Lecture Center C1

    Lunch with the Alderman: 1:00 - 1:50 pm in 121 Burnham Hall.  RSVP for the lunch by noon on Thursday 10/13 at https://uofi.uic.edu/sb/sec/70030.

    All students are welcome to attend the lecture without RSVP’ing.  Lunch is limited to 25 undergraduate students and RSVP is required for lunch.  If max capacity is reached for lunch, students will be notified. Students who plan on attending the lunch are also expected to attend the lecture beforehand to be prepared to engage in discussion with the Alderman.

    Julieanna Richardson is the Founder and the Executive Director of The HistoryMakers, the nation’s largest African American video oral history collection.  By recording, preserving and sharing the life stories of thousands of African Americans, from President Barack Obama to the oldest living black cowboy, The HistoryMakers is a leader in helping to educate and enlighten millions worldwide through refashioning a more inclusive record of American history.  Ms. Richardson has a diverse background in corporate law, television production and cable television.  She is also the recipient of the UIC Great Cities Institute's first Vernon Jarrett Senior Fellowship in 2006.

W. Grainger, Inc. his roles included Group President, Division CEO, SVP Marketing & Sales as well as CFO. Post Grainger, Don has been CEO of Exostar, a technology service company in the Aerospace and Defense Industry and Chairman, Asia Pacific for the Hudson Highland Group, a $1.5B talent management and recruitment business.

    Charles Ashby (Chuck) Lewis is chairman of the Lewis-Sebring Family Foundation and Managing General Partner of Coach House Capital, his family office. He is a retired Vice Chairman, Investment Banking, of Merrill Lynch & Co.

    Mr. Lewis is a Trustee of the University of Chicago. He is involved with the UChicago Urban Education Institute and is a member of the Board of Directors of its UChicago Impact LLC unit and of the Governing Board of its UChicago Charter School unit. He is also a member and a life member of the Visiting Committees to the Division of the Social Sciences and to the College at the University, respectively.

    He is a Life Trustee of Amherst and of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, a Life Director of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Illinois Chapter, and a Trustee of the Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago.

    Mr. Lewis was a member of the National Finance Committee for both Obama presidential campaigns and writes occasional commentaries called “Obamagrams.”

    Mr. Lewis was educated at Amherst College and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He also received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Amherst.

    Dr. Kluemper is an Assistant Professor of Management at UIC, and received his Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior from Oklahoma State University. His dissertation focused on the examination of ability-based emotional intelligence in the structured employment interview, and his research on Organizational Behavior and Human Resource Management is widely published. Dr. Kluemper has also received numerous awards for his excellence in teaching.
