  • Amgen Scholars Biotechnology research summer program, Apply by Mon. 2/1

    Harvard University is one of ten U.S. institutions that again will be offering a ten-week Amgen Scholars Program in the summer of 2016.  The Harvard-Amgen program, with an emphasis on biotechnology research, affords a diverse cohort of rising undergraduate juniors and seniors the opportunity to work in laboratories of faculty across the Harvard universe, including the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering, the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and the Division of Medical Sciences at Harvard Medical School. In addition to an engaging, formative research experience, Harvard-Amgen Scholars will live among the 400 undergraduates residents of the Harvard Summer Undergraduate Research Village community in one of the historic Houses along the Charles River.

  • Chicago Humanities Festival Summer Internship Opportunities, Apply by 4/30

    Chicago Humanities Festival is recruiting summer interns for the Marketing, Development, Programing, Production and Web/Multi-Media departments.   

    Interns are a vital component of our staff, we offer several project-based internships during three internship sessions (summer/fall/spring). The internship program requires a commitment of 14-21 hours a week for 3 to 9 months (a 9 month internship is preferred, but a minimum commitment of 3 months is required). The summer internship starts early June 2016 through late August 2016.  We are more than happy to accommodate variations on those dates if your students have different requirements.  Attached is the internship application form and description of internships available this summer session.  Applications are due April 30.

    Also attached is some information for students who would like to volunteer for our first ever Spring Festival, Style. April 28 – May1, 2016. Feel free to contact me with any questions you have about our internship or volunteer programs.

    As a campus intern with the Student PIRGs, you can:

    •    Fight global warming by convincing the EPA to enforce new clean air standards for power plants.
    •    Take on the publishing industry to stop textbook ripoffs.
    •    Learn how to build and lead teams of volunteers, organize events on campus, and work with the media.

  • Linguistic Society of America Paid Summer Internship, Apply by Tues. 4/28

    The Linguistic Society of America is seeking applications for the position of student intern at its national office for the summer 2015 semester (June - August). This is a great opportunity to learn more about the field of linguistics, the professional needs of LSA members, and the LSA's broader agenda to advance the scientific study of language. This internship also provides exposure to the workings of a small non-profit organization based in the nation's capital.

    Interns will gain experience with writing, research, database management, social science policy, and a variety of administrative tasks. The position is open to undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in programs leading to a degree in linguistics or a related field.

    Funding is available to support one part-time position @ 32 hours per week (stipend = $5000). In order to receive a stipend, applicants must be U.S. citizens or foreign nationals with the appropriate work visa.   • National Cancer Institute Summer Research Fellowship, Apply by 2/15

    The National Cancer Institute’s (NCI) Cancer Systems Biology Consortium and Physical Sciences in Oncology Network are offering rising Junior and Senior undergraduates with outstanding research potential the opportunity to work closely with faculty mentors from NCI-supported institutions for an 8-week summer fellowship. The 2017 summer research program is designed specifically for students to gain experience in the interdisciplinary fields of systems biology and physical oncology. Students who are especially interested in cancer research careers are encouraged to apply. Opportunities are available at 14 research institutions across the United States. Stipend, housing, and travel to and from the host institution are covered by NCI. Additionally, students will convene at the NIH in Bethesda, MD, mid-way through the summer to present their research and network with their peers.

  • Summer Internships Available at Simmons Cancer Institute at SIU, Apply by Fri. 3/13

    College students interested in a career in medicine or cancer research are invited to apply for one of four internships at Simmons Cancer Institute (SCI) at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. Interns will have the opportunity to learn laboratory and critical thinking skills while immersed in research labs under the supervision of SCI faculty members.

    Three intern positions are located at the School of Medicine campus in Springfield. The fourth position is located at the SIU Carbondale campus.

    “The internships provide successful candidates with daily hands-on experience in our active cancer research labs and hopefully will further strengthen their interests in biomedical research and medicine, including cancer research,” said Dr. Donald S. Torry, professor and chair of the Department of Medical Microbiology, Immunology and Cell Biology.

    Qualified individuals will have completed their freshman year of college by June 2015 and not have graduated from college prior to June 2015.

    Applicants should submit a current college transcript, a résumé and two letters of reference from instructors, along with a personal statement letter describing current studies, activities and future goals. The paid internships are awarded on a competitive basis.

  • Volunteer with Illinois JusticeCorps and/or Visit the Daley Center Courthouse

    Volunteer with the Illinois JusticeCorps and learn about legal documents and how the court system at the Daley Center operates.

    In addition, the Pre-Law Society will be planning a group visit to the Daley Center courthouse to tour the Cook County Resource Center for People Without a Lawyer, where students will learn more about Illinois JusticeCorps and undergraduate volunteer opportunities. We will meet April 15th (a Friday) at 3:00 in the Montgomery Ward Lounge to take the Blue Line together to the courthouse.

  • The Washington Center Internships Info Session, Thurs. 4/7

    As you may already know, The Washington Center is an educational, non-profit organization based in Washington, D.C. We partner with colleges and universities to provide students from most majors with an opportunity to intern in the nation's capital while earning academic credit at their home institution.

    A TWC representative, Sara Biggs, will be visiting your campus on Thursday, April 7th and will host an information session in the Office of Career Services Conference Room at 3:00 p.m.

    Scholarships for Illinois students are still available. Students attending the University of Illinois at Chicago may be eligible to receive up to $8,000 in scholarships for TWC's upcoming summer term. There is no additional paperwork required beyond our standard application.

    Rape Victim Advocates (RVA) is looking for interns for a position beginning this summer and extending next year in their Advocacy Program.

    Accepted candidates will attend summer training beginning July 25th– August 29th, every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday 5:30pm – 9:30pm.

    RVA is an independent, not‐for‐profit organization dedicated to the healing and empowerment of sexual assault survivors through non‐judgmental crisis intervention counseling, individual and group counseling, and medical and legal advocacy in the greater Chicago metropolitan area. RVA provides public education and institutional advocacy in order to improve the treatment of sexual assault survivors and to effect positive change in policies and public attitudes toward sexual assault.

  • Paid internship in illustration and journalism, Spring 2015, Apply by 12/1

    The Illustrated Press is looking to hire a young illustrator and we need your help! We’ll be partnering with the Illinois Humanities Council and the Community Media Workshop for an upcoming project and we’ve got a slot open for a motivated young artist interested in illustration and media. Our ideal candidate will have a strong leaning toward art and newswriting with a passion for illustration.

    This is both a paid and educational position. Our intern will have the opportunity to work one-on-one with professional journalists and illustrators to create a well-reported, engaging, relevant piece of illustrated journalism for “Reporting Back: New Perspectives from Communities.”

    This will be an exciting learning experience with a highly visible final project. We’ll encourage our young artist to pursue a story thread that interests him or her, according to project guidelines. Our candidate will help to write, research, report, and illustrate the story, with the guidance of Illustrated Press mentors.

    We’d love to reach as many South and West side teens and young adults as possible, so, if you fit this description or know someone who does please feel free shoot us an email and/or forward this email along.

    Duties Include:

    • Working with Illustrated Press staff to conceptualize a theme related to an issue of importance to communities on the South and West sides of Chicago (see “The Project”).
    • Reporting the story with guidance from Illustrated Press staff (including interviews, photos and writing).
    • Illustrating the final product with guidance from Illustrated Press staff.

    The Fine Print:

    • The application is open to all ages, genders and skill levels; however an emphasis will be placed on young men and women ages 16-25 with a passion for illustration, civic engagement and diversity in media.
    • Our community participant will be paid $500/month for three months, beginning in January and culminating in the IHC/CMW presentation in March/April.
    • Time commitment: 5-8 hours/week for 3 months (specific times flexible; to be coordinated between media mentor and community participant)

    “The Illinois Humanities Council seeks an engaged Chicago resident for its upcoming project,Reporting Back: New Perspectives from Communities. As a member of a two-person media-citizen team, the community participant will collaborate closely with a media mentor to co-research, co-report and co-write an enterprise story broadly related to gun violence in Chicago and its representation in the media. Successful projects will highlight alternative or underrepresented perspectives on communities frequently associated with gun violence in Chicago, aiming to shift media narratives and improve the quality of discourse around the issue.

    Projects may address topics including but not limited to: reality vs. media representations of life in a violence-affected neighborhood; social, political and economic factors in gun violence not adequately analyzed in media; solutions-based community initiatives and their impact; or other topics according to team interests.”

  • Gene Siskel Film Center in search of festival intern / summer 2016

    The Gene Siskel Film Centers annual Black Harvest Film Festival is the Midwests largest festival of the black experience on film. The intern will have the opportunity to research and gather marketing information via the internet, Black Harvest Community Council, and other resources. They will assist in contacting individuals, organizations, and media to assist in bringing more visibility to the festival. Working on mailings and assisting to develop and maintain targeted community mailing lists. Disseminating information about events through email, phone, and social media. Assisting with opening and closing nights, and other events as-needed. Assisting with gathering of marketing data, press coverage, and other information for final report. General office work may also include answering phones and other administrative duties.

    Ideal candidates would be students in a public relations/marketing program, film studies, communications, and Black/African-American Studies. The candidate must be detail-oriented and possess superior writing skills. A strong work ethic and demonstrated ability to interact well with the public, filmmakers, and colleagues is strongly desired.

    Length of Program: mid/late-June to mid-September

    The Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS), Clinical Research Center is seeking a student worker who will aid in the day to day activities to help keep the Clinical Research Center running efficiently and effectively.

    For over 7 years, CFS's Freedom Fellowship has been supporting youth in further developing their leadership and activism/organizing skills.  The Chicago Freedom School is seeking Campaign Coaches who will design and lead four 6-hour courses (24-hours total) for youth ages 14 - 17 enrolled in the 2014 Freedom Fellowship Summer Leadership Institute. Coaches will be comprised of people who are activists, organizers, teachers and/or professionals interested in working with young people. Coaches will design creative and engaging courses that emphasize the real life experience of young people as well as prepare them to pursue social justice issues. Courses must speak to one of two issue areas: Healthy Communities or Fair and Just Schools. The application deadline is April 25, 2014.

    The Office of Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel is offering volunteer, unpaid internships in the Mayor's Office of Press and Communications.

    DESCRIPTION: Intern will assist with tasks like transcription and media monitoring, handling special projects as needed, and providing administrative assistance. Interns may also take on special projects according to their interests and the needs of the team. The Mayor’s Office seeks a candidate with an interest in urban issues and with strong writing skills. Interns will learn about the operations of a top-tier communications & press organization and should ideally be available to work part-time (at least 25 hours a week).

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Must be a current college or city college student in good academic standing, enrolled in an accredited two or four year college or university. Must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 grading scale or a 3.5 on a 5.0 grading scale.

    PREFERENCE: Students with a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale will be given preference. Candidates should be able to work in a fast-paced environment.

  • RISEUP: Summer Research Internships related to Environmental Sustainability, Apply by Feb. 1

    We would like to extend an invitation to motivated students like you who are seeking a way to get paid to explore their passion for environmental sustainability by participating in the 2015 RISEUP summer internship program.

    Research Internships for a Sustainable Environment with Undergraduate Participation, or RISEUP, is a 12-week paid summer internship program sponsored by Wayne State University's Center for Peace and Conflict Studies. The program is dedicated to empowering creative thinkers with the tools and methods through which to impact tomorrow's environment. Our hands-on, mentored research projects offer the chance for qualified undergraduate students to study multiple-stakeholder environmental issues in the Lake St. Clair-Detroit-River-Lake Erie corridor.  

    RISEUP Interns will receive:
    1) personalized professional mentorship
    2) $4,000 stipend
    3) online publication of their results
    4) chance to compete for a prize by presenting their research at an undergraduate research symposium

  • US Hispanic Leadership Institute Summer Internship Program, Apply by 5/9

    The United States Hispanic Leadership Institute (USHLI) is looking to hire ten interns for their paid summer internship program. The 21st Century Leaders Summer Internship Program is a ten week program that promotes grassroots community organizing and leadership development in key impact areas.

    The student dedicates ten weeks to reaching his/her goal of registering 1000 new or restored voters. The student must also continue to maintain contact with his/her supervisor at least once a week. The internship requires a mandatory training in Chicago, Illinois, May 30-31, 2014. The internship program will officially begin June 1, 2014 and concludes August 8, 2014. The student must commit to the two days of training and ten uninterrupted weeks of the internship in order to be considered.

    Available opportunities for spring 2017 include:

    *         Festival Programming Assistant - The Programming Assistant works closely with the Programming Director to coordinate Festival submissions, process entries, and develop and execute film screenings, workshops and special events. Candidates should have a background in film production or criticism, have strong writing skills (for note-taking, correspondence and film descriptions) or have coordinated events. Interns can gain experience in project management, event coordination, research, film programming, writing and publicity.

    *         Marketing/Social Media Coordinator - Students can expect to learn and gain proficiency in the use of social media as part of a coordinated marketing approach. This internship will offer participants the opportunity to help identify and analyze a target audience and plan and implement elements of marketing campaigns. This position also serves as Facets' liaison to online and social-media-based networks of film-lovers, keeping Facets apprised of ongoing conversations and raising online awareness of Facets' mission, programs, and offerings. Applicants should possess creativity, a broad and informed love of movies, attention to detail, experience in writing, general office skills, and Internet research. Responsibilities may also include coordinating promotional relationships and items for Facets, Facets Children's Programs and special events, publicizing in ethnic or niche markets, and Festival publicity coordination. Proficiency with graphic design programs a plus.

    *         Facets DVD Label - Sales, Marketing & Publicity Internship - The Facets DVD label distributes international and independent films on DVD, digitally and in theatres around the country.  Interns will participate in all aspects of independent film distribution including DVD releases, digital delivery and educational marketing. Tasks involve customer research and development, creating marketing materials and Internet campaigns, coordinating with press, creating promotional video clips, designing press kits, and interacting with filmmakers. Duties are in the field of film distribution - This is not a production job. Applicants should be web-savvy and proficient with both PCs and Macs and Excel. Photoshop skills not required but appreciated. Interest in film marketing and distribution, and/or film publicity is a plus. The environment is informal and collaborative and involves direct contact with all levels of Facets staff.

    The Urban Public Policy Fellowship (UPPF) program is a leadership development program designed to expose historically underrepresented minority undergraduate students at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) to key public policy issues. The program provides Fellows with weekly seminars offering a solid introduction to theory and practice in the areas of public policymaking, advocacy, community development, and service provision and also a valuable internship experience. 

    Students from all academic areas are eligible, including those with an interest in fields such as education, urban planning, political science, sociology, urban health, communication, and law. Upperclassman standing (minimum 45 hours) is necessary to participate in this non-degree, non-credit program.
