  The Berkeley Undergraduate Essay Prize is awarded annually by the Department of German for outstanding unpublished papers written during the previous calendar year by undergraduate students enrolled at a North American university/college. Thus the 2014 prize will consider papers written during 2013 on a broad range of topics in German studies. The winning essays carry a cash award of $500 each and will be considered for publication in the department’s electronic journal TRANSIT (http://german.berkeley.edu/transit ).

  Essays for submission may be written in German or in English; one submission per student. They should be double-spaced, between 3000 and 5000 words in length (including notes and references), and without the student’s name on the paper, since the Awards Committee reads the essays anonymously. A separate cover sheet with the student’s name, title of the paper, address, phone number, and e-address should accompany the submitted essay. The essay may be submitted in hard copy or electronically. The submission deadline is February 15, 2014; winners announced May 2.

  Humanity in Action:

  The Humanity in Action Fellowship brings together international groups of Fellows to study minority rights and produce original research exploring how and why individuals and societies, past and present, have resisted intolerance and protected democratic values. Separate programs take place for five weeks every summer in Amsterdam, Atlanta, Berlin, Copenhagen, Paris, and Warsaw.  Fellows only pay the cost of airfare to their host country; students can apply while in college or soon afterwards.

  The Latin American Recruitment and Educational Services (LARES) program is currently soliciting applications for the upcoming Spring 2015 LARES Tuition Award. The goal of this award is to assist LARES students reach their goal of obtaining a baccalaureate degree. Candidates are considered based on merit including academic record and leadership. Priority will be given to students who have not received previous MAP Grant money or other agencies that cover tuition costs.   According to the foundation website, the Paul and Daisy Soros Scholarship for New Americans “provide[s] opportunities for continuing generations of able and accomplished New Americans to achieve leadership in their chosen fields and to partake of the American dream. The program was established in recognition of the contributions New Americans have made to American life and in gratitude for the opportunities the United States afforded the founders of the Fellowship, Paul & Daisy Soros.”

  Some additional information:
  *Applicants are considered “New Americans” if they are naturalized American citizens (or permanent residents) or if both of their parents are naturalized citizens.
  *At the time of their selection, Fellows must be college seniors or early in the graduate programs for which they request support.
  *Each Fellow receives tuition and living expenses that can total as much as $90,000 over two academic years. This money is used for graduate or professional school, including medical school.
  *Fellows are selected on the basis of merit (not financial need). The specific criteria emphasize creativity, originality, initiative and sustained accomplishment.

  Each year, every four-year degree-granting higher education institution in Illinois chooses ONE senior to receive the prestigious Abraham Lincoln Civic Engagement Award and becomes a Student Laureate of the Lincoln Academy. Laureates are honored for their leadership, overall excellence in both curricular and co-curricular activities, and service in pursuit of the betterment of humanity.  The deadline has been extended to Wednesday, 10/7.

• Science Ambassador Scholarship, Apply by 12/1

  The Science Ambassador Scholarship is a full tuition scholarship for a woman seeking an undergraduate degree in science, engineering, or math, funded by Cards Against Humanity. The ideal candidate will be an ambassador for their field–someone passionate about discovery who shares their excitement with others.

  To apply, submit a video of yourself explaining a topic in science you are passionate about. The videos will be reviewed by a board of fifty women who hold higher degrees and work professionally in science and engineering. Ten video finalists will move onto the next round and submit additional materials.

  Scholarship funds will be provided from Cards Against Humanity’s Science Pack–a 30-card expansion pack co-authored with Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal’ sZach Weinersmith and Bad Astronomy’s Phil Plait.

  The winner of the Science Ambassador Scholarship will receive full tuition coverage for up to four years.

  Thomas Gale Scholarship for Kenyan and US students

  2 awards available for current undergraduate students ordinarily resident in the US - students will be able to apply for one of our 3 week summer school courses listed here.

  The scholarship is up to the value of £3000, covering;

  TuitionAccommodationFlightsVisa costs

  + a stipend for living costs.

  This is a need based award aimed at students who would not ordinarily be able to afford to come to SOAS Academic Summer School.

  The deadline for applications is March 31st.

  SOAS is part of the University of London and was formerly known as the School of Oriental and African Studies. Their Academic Summer School offers three and five-week courses taught by SOAS' world-renowned academics.
