  • Undergraduate Sustainability Internship: Smart Grid, Apply by 1/9

    The Office of Sustainability has partnered with the African American Cultural Center and community non-profits to apply culturally specific approaches to environmental sustainability generally, and energy efficiency/smart grid specifically.  We are seeking up to eight (8) interns for an externally funded project. The interns will work under the direction of the Office of Sustainability Associate Chancellor for Sustainability. Interns will either be assigned to a community partner or to work on with the UIC campus community to educate and engage them in learning about energy efficiency and smart grid and how it benefits them. This internship is available for spring (unpaid) and summer and early fall (paid).

    Duties Include:

    • Attend weekly one-hour seminars during spring and summer as part of the Sustainability Internship program
    • Participate in community partner trainings on smart grid and ethnographic approaches needed to work in culturally specific contexts
    • Help partner organization to implement education program about the smart grid using the knowledge and skills gained through the training and seminars.

     

    Ideal Candidate will have:

    • Interest in energy efficiency and sustainability generally
    • Interest in working closely with an off campus community partner
    • Knowledge of or willingness to learn smart grid technical information
    • Ability to travel off campus within the city of Chicago
    • Experience with outreach as it pertains to face to face communication

    This position offers up to 8-10 hrs./week spring and up to 15-20 hours/week in summer.  Hourly pay during summer and early fall is $8.77/hour. Arrangement for credit during Spring 2014 semester may be possible within student’s department or college.

  • Kartemquin Internships in filmmaking and media arts, Apply by 12/19

    Kartemquin has two great opportunities for students and alum, our Internship and Diverse Voices in Documentary fellowship, with deadlines coming up in December.

    Kartemquin Internship (with stipend)

    Interns at Kartemquin will have the opportunity to train with an internationally recognized non-profit media arts organization and learn how social issue documentary films are created, from research and development to distribution and outreach. Interns collaborate and train with a team of filmmakers who have produced emotionally compelling, challenging, and socially relevant documentaries for over forty-five years.

    Internship duties comprise a healthy mix of office administration, business and finance administration, and assistance with current documentary projects.  Project assistance takes many forms and can include: production work; post-production work; project management; project research; grant research/applications; and film festival submissions.

    Autumn and spring term internships are part-time and run approximately 16-18 weeks. Summer internships are also part-time, unpaid and run about 9 weeks. Interns are offered a $500 stipend to coverinternship expenses. Interns will be expected to work approximately 16-20 hours a week, preferably spending at least one full day a week at Kartemquin. All interns will schedule their time during normal business hours, 9:30-6:00, Monday-Friday (except when assisting at special events and shoots that take place outside of regular hours).

    Diverse Voices in Documentary: 

    Applications are now being accepted for the DVID 2015 program! Apply at kartemquin.comdiversevoices before December 19th! 

    Diverse Voices in Docs (#DVID) is a professional development and mentorship program for documentary makers of color, organized by Kartemquin Films and the Community Film Workshop of Chicago.

    At the core of the fellowship are six engaging three-hour workshops at the Community Film Workshop, with creative advice provided by Kartemquin Films’ world-class staff and associates. Each session will provide practical skill-enrichment designed to help incubate your next documentary project, as well as time to network and share experience with your cohort of participants.

    Applicants should be filmmakers who have played a principal role in a completed production (producer, writer, director, editor, etc.) and have experience or work history that demonstrated their commitment to social issue documentary. We will facilitate continued engagement throughout the six-month workshop program, and connect you to an expert community, new collaborators, and a wider network of funders and distributors. The program will culminate in exposure through a final public exhibition.

  • Digital Communications Internship Opportunity in UIC Office of Undergraduate Research

  • UIC Heritage Garden Paid Summer Internship, Apply by Fri. 3/20

    The UIC Heritage Garden is a hands-on learning project with an internship program. Student interns work with faculty, staff, and community members to connect horticulture with environmental sustainability, cultural diversity, and social justice. There are currently six satellite gardens on the east side of campus.

    Interns sustain the planting of the satellite gardens and offer public programs including tours of the gardens. The UIC Green Fee has funded paid internships since its inception in the summer of 2013. The six Centers for Cultural Understanding and Social Change (CCUSC) collaborate on this project with program infrastructure provided by the Latino Cultural Center.

    The internship will be from May 18 - August 14, 2015 with a one week break from June 29 - July 3rd. Summer interns will be expected to work 20 hours a week, from 9am-1pm, Monday through Friday. Interns receive a stipend of $2,400. Applications are due Friday, March 20th by 5pm.   • 2015 Steiner Summer Yiddish Program, Apply by 2/10

    The Yiddish Book Center in Amherst, Massachusetts, is now accepting applications for two education programs for college students and recent graduates: the 2015 Steiner Summer Yiddish Program and the 2015-16 Yiddish Book Center Fellowship Program. 
     
    The Steiner Summer Yiddish Program is an intensive seven-week course in Yiddish language and culture for college students. The program offers a beginner track for students with no previous Yiddish experience and an intermediate track for those who have completed one year of Yiddish. In addition to their classes, students take part in cultural and social activities at the Center. Students live and eat at the adjacent Hampshire College campus.
     
    All Steiner students receive full-tuition scholarships. Intermediate students also receive free housing and a $1,000 stipend in exchange for working on ongoing projects at the Center. All participants are eligible to receive college credits through the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
     
    The 2015 Steiner Summer Yiddish Program will run from June 7 to July 24. Applications are due by February 10. For more information, visit yiddishbookcenter.org/Steiner-summer-program.
     
    The Yiddish Book Center Fellowship Program offers recent college graduates with intermediate or advanced Yiddish skills an opportunity to develop professional experience while working as full-time members of the Center's staff. 
     
    Fellows serve as teaching assistants for college-level Yiddish classes, conduct interviews for the Center’s Wexler Oral History Project, develop educational and exhibit materials, assist with translation or online accessibility initiatives, and do bibliographic work with the Center’s collection of books. With the support of mentors, Fellows also apply their ingenuity and personal expertise to the creation of new projects.
     
    Fellows receive a $28,000 stipend and health insurance. The next Fellowship Program runs from September of 2015 to August of 2016. Applications are due by January 5. For more information, visit yiddishbookcenter.org/fellowship-program.

    City of Chicago Mayor’s Office of Press and Communications VOLUNTEER INTERN OPPORTUNITY

    DESCRIPTION: Intern will assist with tasks like transcription and media monitoring, handling special projects as needed, and providing administrative assistance. Interns may also take on special projects according to their interests and the needs of the team. The Mayor’s Office seeks a candidate with an interest in urban issues and with strong writing skills. Interns will learn about the operations of a top-tier communications & press organization and should ideally be available to work part-time (at least 25 hours a week). These are temporary positions.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Must be a current college or city college student in good academic standing, enrolled in an accredited two or four year college or university. Must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 grading scale or a 3.5 on a 5.0 grading scale.

  • Fulbright-National Geographic Digital Storytelling Fellowship, Due 2/28

    The new component of the Fulbright Program will offer up to five awards to U.S. citizens for nine months of overseas travel and multi-media storytelling on globally significant social or environmental topics. Fellows will focus their digital stories on one of the program’s eight themes: biodiversity, cities, cultures, disasters, energy, food, oceans, and water. The Fulbright-National Geographic Fellowship will provide a unique platform for U.S. Fulbrighters to undertake an in-depth exploration of a globally relevant issue, comparing and contrasting how that issue is experienced across borders. Utilizing a variety of digital storytelling tools and media, including blogs, photography, video, and social media, Fellows will share their stories by providing content to a National Geographic blog and other platforms with the support of National Geographic’s editorial team.

  • Social media and Marketing Internship in the Office of Undergraduate Research

    The UIC Office of Undergraduate Research seeks a social media and marketing intern for the fall semester or entire 16-17 academic year. This internship is unpaid but could be structured to meet the requirements of an honors college activity or a for-credit professional internship program in the major or degree-granting college, with an advisor's approval. 

    The student will work with the OUR 3-8 hours per week to find and publicize research and creative engagement opportunities for undergraduates and help organize, publicize and assess the impact of in-person events in comparison to online events and resources. Those interested in graphic or digital design would make posters, brochures and web pages, depending on their skill set. This would be an ideal opportunity for someone interested in digital media communications, social media, event planning, graphic or digital design, academic affairs and student success initiatives (higher education), and social or community psychology. The duties will be assigned to maximally benefit the student's educational goals.

    The Open Society Youth Fellowship supports young activists and organizers as thought leaders and allies in crafting solutions and new youth-focused approaches to open society challenges.

    Youth Fellows should take advantage of the considerable intellectual and logistical resources of the Open Society Foundations and expect to contribute meaningfully to the Foundations’ thinking in return. While fellows will work outside of Open Society Foundations core offices, they will liaise with the Open Society Youth Exchange to identify opportunities for both in-person and virtual engagement with Open Society staff and partners. The Youth Exchange will work with each individual fellow to identify additional opportunities for the fellow to learn from and collaborate with staff and partners through site visits, speaking engagements, and other fora.

    Fellows may produce a variety of work products, including publications, such as reports and blog posts; infographics and other visual content; innovative education and training resources and tools; the launch of new campaigns and organizations; and creation of artistic or cultural expression projects. They may also engage in activities such as hosting panel discussions, traveling to conferences, and presenting on their work in other public spaces.

    The Urban Public Policy Fellowship (UPPF) program is a leadership development program designed to expose historically underrepresented minority undergraduate students at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) to key public policy issues. The program provides Fellows with weekly seminars offering a solid introduction to theory and practice in the areas of public policymaking, advocacy, community development, and service provision and also a valuable internship experience.  Students from all academic areas are eligible, including those with an interest in fields such as education, urban planning, political science, sociology, urban health, communication, and law.     The Academic Year Internship is a full-time paid position in New York City offering exceptional training in serious journalism.   • Six-Month Multimedia and Production Internships at The Moth in NYC, Apply by Fri. 5/1

    The Moth is an acclaimed not-for-profit organization dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling. It is a celebration of both the raconteur, who breathes fire into true tales of ordinary life, and the storytelling novice, who has lived through something extraordinary and yearns to share it. At the center of each performance is, of course, the story – and The Moth’s directors work with each storyteller to find, shape and present it.

    The Moth now has two seasons for which we hire interns: Fall (July-December) and Spring (January-June). Each season we seek one Development Intern, one Multimedia intern and three Production Interns: one to support the national StorySLAM program, the other two to support the New York and touring Mainstage Programs. We are looking for applicants with a strong work ethic, a desire to learn new skills in production and a passion for stories and community building through storytelling.

    All internships will take place in The Moth’s New York City office and applicants must be able to commit to the full six-month session, we do not accept applications for summer-only interns. Interns can self-elect a 20 or 32 hour per week internship. The Moth provides a weekly stipend of $250 for 32 hour/week internships and $175 for 20 hour/week internships.

    The University of Pennsylvania’s Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics (LDI) offers paid summer internships for underrepresented minority undergraduates, or any other undergraduates interested in exploring the field of health services research.  LDI is one of the country’s largest health services research centers coordinating the work of more than 200 senior fellows investigating the medical, economic, and social issues that influence how health care is organized, financed, managed, and delivered across the US.  The LDI Summer Undergraduate Minority Research (SUMR) program pairs students with senior fellows to work on real research projects throughout the three-month duration of the course. Those mentors are also faculty members at Penn Medicine, The Wharton School, Penn Nursing, Penn Dental and Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania.
