    Talk with your Faculty Fellow and/or Honors Advisor about any questions you may have. Activity Agreement Forms, signed by your Activity Supervisor and Faculty Fellow, are due January 29!

  • All Honors Students: Register for HON 222 or HON 322 for Spring 2016

    Remember that all Honors College students should be registered for HON 222: Honors Activity (0 credit hours) each semester, unless you are working on your Honors Capstone project.  If you are working on your Honors Capstone project, you should NOT register for HON 222 and should instead register for HON 322: Honors Capstone Activity (0 credit hours) for Spring 2015.  If you have questions, please contact your Honors Advisor.

    Get your Honors College i-Card sticker today! Spring 2016 stickers are now available at the Honors College front desk. The sticker entitles you to extended library privileges and access to Honors College facilities and events! Don’t miss out!

  • Honors College Ball Tickets On Sale Now!

    Tickets for the Honors College Ball are on sale now thru February 19th. Tickets sell fast, so get yours early!

    Tickets will be sold in the Honors College Student Lounge (109 Burnham Hall) from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., Monday - Friday. Remember, this event is open to all UIC students, faculty, and staff. Guests do not have to be affiliated with UIC; however, a UIC member must sponsor the purchase. In other words, outside guests cannot purchase a ticket for themselves.

    The ticket price includes dinner, dancing, unlimited soft drinks, and photo booth! Cash or check is accepted. Please make checks payable to the University of Illinois at Chicago.

    General Student tickets are $50 each
    Faculty/staff tickets are $90 each

    Also, UIC Campus Housing is offering a $10 discount to the ticket price for Honors College Housing students! There are a limited number of these tickets available and you must purchase the ticket through Housing’s online system, click here: http://www.housing.uic.edu/dock.

    After signing up, the discounted cost of the ticket ($40) will be charged to your university account. Honors College Housing students who wish to bring a guest(s) may purchase additional tickets in-person at the Honors College at the $50 student rate.

  • Honors College Tutoring Center Opens Mon. 1/25!

    The Honors College Tutoring Center in 220 BH is open for the semester!

    Qualified Honors College students are available to help you in almost every subject. View the updated Spring 2016 tutoring schedule below.

    You do not need an appointment to see a tutor; the service is free and available to every UIC student. 

    Hours

    The Honors College Tutoring Program takes place Monday through Friday, between the hours of 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

    Location

    The tutoring center is located on the second floor of Burnham Hall in Room 220 BH.

    Note: There will be no tutoring during Thanksgiving Break, Spring Break, or during finals week, so our students may concentrate on their exams.

  • Honors College Research & Travel Grants (Deadline 2/26)

    A significant advantage of being in the Honors College is access to money to support your undergraduate research or other scholarly projects. Please see your faculty research advisor right away and start on your applications for several grants-in-aid, which are all due on-line Friday, February 26, 2016. All applications must be read by and supported by a letter from your research faculty advisor.

    (1) Research grants: All forms of scholarship are supported, including Capstone Projects. Maximum award is $1,000, for expenditures incurred since August 24, 2015 or anticipated for projects planned for current or planned research projects. Reasonable research expenses may be covered (but not student stipends). Please submit your application here: https://uic.academicworks.com/opportunities/1818

    (2) Travel grants: Proposals will be considered for expenses associated with presentation of research at conferences (e.g., flight, hotel, poster preparation costs) up to $500. Please submit your application here: https://uic.academicworks.com/opportunities/1815

    Whether you are conducting scientific experiments, lab research, or surveys, whether you are analyzing data from field work such as participant observation or in-depth interviews, creating a set for a play, designing a building, or exploring historical archives, you may apply for funding to support your research, attend professional conferences, pay for your Research Forum poster, and so on. 

    Please read the award announcements carefully, and follow instructions for submission of rationale and methods, detailed budget and budget justification, letter of support, and so on. Submit your completed online application--include support letter--by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, February 26, 2016. The online system will be terminated at that time and no late applications will be accepted.

  • Honors College Scholarships for Study Abroad, Due Fri. 3/18

    The Honors College offers two scholarships to support students studying abroad: Dean’s Scholarship for Study Abroad and Flaherty Scholarship. The scholarships are available in awards ranging from $500 to $2,500. To be eligible to apply for the scholarships, students must apply to a study abroad program endorsed by the UIC Campus and be a member of the Honors College. A cumulative UIC grade point average of 3.40 upon application for the scholarships is required. The deadline for programs taking place in Summer and Fall 2016 is Friday, March 18, 2016.   • Honors College Ambassadors-Now Accepting Applications

    Honors College Ambassadors Accepting Applications for 2016-17, Apply by Thurs. 3/31

    The Honors College is now accepting applications for Honors Ambassadors for the 2016-17 year.

    WHO ARE HONORS AMBASSADORS?

    Honors Ambassadors are Honors College students who have decided to take that extra step in becoming part of the Honors College team by recruiting and welcoming first-year students into UIC and the Honors College. Working through the Honors College from May 2016 through Spring 2017, Honors Ambassadors are instrumental in welcoming new Honors College students to UIC and assisting in their engagement to campus resources and the Honors College Community.

    WHAT DO HONORS AMBASSADORS DO?

    Each Honors Ambassador will serve as a mentor to approximately 10 incoming freshman. Ambassadors will be assigned their mentees based on the Freshman Orientation program date they are assigned and expected to attend to meet their mentees. Throughout the summer, the Ambassador is expected to stay in touch with their mentees. Ambassadors are required to attend the Freshman Retreat onFriday August 19th to reconnect with their mentees. For the Fall semester, Ambassadors will be assigned one of the four tasks: blog for the Ampersand Newsletter about their experience in the Honors College, serve as a PAPH Ambassador (be of service during PAPH week), serve as an HON 101 Teaching Assistant, or serve as an Activities Coordinator for HAMBS-Sponsored events. The term of service continues into the Spring in further support of Honors College Admissions activities.

    Honors Ambassadors must be in good standing with the Honors College by the end of the Spring 2016 semester. Applications can be submitted online (https://uofi.uic.edu/sb/sec/772161) and the application deadline is March 31. Applicants will be required to attend a group interview that will be part of the selection process. Please contact Eliza Callahan (eycas@uic.edu) with any questions.

  • Apply to join the 2016-17 Honors College Advisory Board, Due Fri. 4/15

    Elections for the 2016-2017 academic year are now underway to select new members of the Honors College Advisory Board!

    HCAB serves as a body of student representation advisory to the Dean of the College and its faculty and staff. The organization also helps develop and organize various social and programming initiatives for the Honors College. So, come represent your fellow Honors College students, help build community among between your peers and faculty, and be a part of planning some of the College’s major events, such as the Annual Honors College Ball!

    If you are interested in joining HCAB, please submit your application to the Honors College no later than 5:00 p.m. on Friday, April 15th. To note, hard copies of the application can also be found at the College.

    Want to be a tutor in the Honors College Tutoring Center?

    Tutors must meet the following:

    o   Be a student in good standing with the Honors College

    o   Have attended UIC for at least 1 year

    o   Must be able to tutor in at least 3 different courses (you must have earned an A or B in classes taken at UIC in order to be eligible to tutor for those courses)

    o   Schedule 3 hours each week

     

    Students who intend to participate in the Honors College Tutoring program must complete an application (available in the Honors College office). The preferred deadline for applications is Tuesday, May 31, 2016; THE FINAL DEADLINE IS FRIDAY, AUGUST 19, 2016. The tutoring program is scheduled to begin on TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 2016. Once students have submitted an application and received confirmation of their participation in the program they should then register for HON 202 (CRN 13771). Students must be registered for HON 202 (in addition to HON 222) to count Honors College Tutoring as their honors activity. If you decide NOT to tutor, you must drop HON 202 by September 2, 2016 to avoid a “W” grade; if you drop between September 3, 2016 and October 28, 2016 you will receive a “W”. You will receive additional information about your tutoring schedule by the first week of classes in the Fall 2016 term.

  • December 2016 Graduates: Complete HC Graduation Declaration Form, Apply to be Student Speaker

    REMINDER:  Please complete the Honors College Graduation Declaration and Convocation Reservation if you have not already!  This form is required whether or not you plan to attend the Honors College Convocation.

    The Honors College Convocation will take place on Wednesday, December 7, (during final exam week) at 7:00 p.m. in the Illinois Room of Student Center East.  We are excited to welcome the Dr. Mrinalini “Meena” Rao, Professor of Physiology and Biophysics, as our keynote speaker.

    Please let us know whether or not you will attend the Convocation by completing and submitting the Graduation Declaration to the Honors College as soon as possible.  The form is available on our website at https://www.honors.uic.edu/convocation.  On the form, you’re asked for information about your accomplishments and future plans – don’t be shy! Give us as much detailed information as possible.  This gives us the opportunity to recognize these accomplishments during the convocation ceremony and to “brag” to the rest of the world about our outstanding Honors College students. 

    In addition, you may want to consider the following opportunity:

    STUDENT SPEAKER:  DUE FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 11

    If you would like to be considered for our Graduating Student Speaker, please submit a draft of what you would say in your address to Stephanie O’Leary by Friday, November 11.  You should plan on speaking for 3-5 minutes.  You may submit your draft by email to soleary@uic.edu or on paper; just drop it off at the reception desk in Burnham Hall if you choose the latter.

  • DEADLINE Extended: Fall Honors College Research Symposium, Register by Fri. 11/11

    Are you completing your Honors Capstone this semester? Are you looking for somewhere to present your research project? The Honors College is excited to announce the Fall 2016 Honors College Research Symposium. This will be a poster presentation event where Honors College students can present their research.

    Time: 3:30-5:30 p.m. (presenters must arrive at 3:00 p.m. to set up and remain for the entire event)

  • Honors College-sponsored Study Abroad in Chiapas, Mexico

    Cultures and Histories in San Cristobal, Chiapas, Mexico

    June 7 – June 30, 2017

    The Honors College and LALS program are jointly sponsoring a summer study abroad program with our own Honors College Faculty Fellow Joel Palka. This program will give students an opportunity to learn about Chiapas from the Colonial Period to the present, as well as acquire knowledge regarding indigenous cultures in Mexico – for example – Mayan indigenous medicine. Students will have unique opportunity to conduct independent study project under supervision of UIC Professor Joel Palka.  This opportunity could be used as the foundation for an Honors Capstone project.

    See the attached flier for more information.  For Honors College students, the cost will be reduced to $3050, $900 less than the flyer says. There are also other scholarships that students can apply for to help defray the costs. Anyone interested should contact the Study Abroad office and attend a Study Abroad First Steps Session ASAP because space is limited.
