It is our hope that you will go out and live these ideals in your involvement on campus and the community.

    Requirements:

Must be a UIC first- or second-year student Must commit to attend every IGNITE session on Tuesday nights from 3:45-6pm starting September 22 and ending November 17. Unfortunately, due to the nature of our program, if a class/work/personal conflict overlaps with our program schedule, the student is not eligible to apply for the program. • Join Peer Health Exchange, Apply by Fri. 9/11

Peer Health Exchange is an organization that trains volunteers to teach health workshops in Chicago Public Schools that would not otherwise have a health curriculum. These workshops include drugs, alcohol, sex, mental health and other vital health topics and also have a strong emphasis on skills (decision-making, communication, advocacy, and more). Not only is the experience extremely rewarding but it is also a ton of fun and gives volunteers the opportunity to meet new people, gain leadership experience, develop public speaking skills, attend networking events city-wide and more!

    Here are a few FAQ:

    What is the time commitment?

-PHE has one meeting a week (Wednesday from 5 to 6:30) and you must teach one workshop a week on either Thursday or Friday (you can choose when you do this!) Altogether, this is about 3 total hours per week.

Teaching seems a little intimidating. How does it work?

The cool thing about PHE is that we COMPLETELY prepare you for every experience in the classroom. Also, we never send you into the classroom alone!

How hard is it to memorize the workshops?

Not very! This is because the workshops are discussion based; therefore, you do not have memorize anything word for word. Much of the time in the classroom is also spent leading activities, which reduces content that needs memorizing.

For any more information you can e-mail uic@peerhealthexchange.org or come to an info session! The info sessions are as follows:

Friday, September 4th from 5-6 pm in the Fort Dearborn Room (Above the inner circle) Wednesday, September 9th from 5-6 pm in BH 121 Friday, September 11th from 4-5 pm in Bh 114

The application is open now at peerhealthexchange.org/apply and the deadline is September 11th, 11:59 pm!

  • The Ampersand Student Blog Contest Fall 2015, Deadline Nov. 5

Do you have something to share with the UIC Honors College community? Write a blog entry for the Ampersand and you could win Honors College prizes, including Honors College shirts, umbrellas, mugs, and more! We are looking for students to write about their experiences as UIC Honors College students and to share their ideas through the Honors College student blog. To get you started, we have four prompts for you to choose from:

    1.  Recount a meaningful Honors Activity experience.

    2.   Who is a person at UIC that has influenced you or inspired your journey through the Honors College at UIC?

    3.   Finish the sentence: "As an Honors College student, I am..."

    4.   For first year/transfer students: Recount your first semester at UIC. How has the Honors College complemented your experience so far?

Blogs that cover any of these topics can be considered for the contest. Submissions will be evaluated based on content and quality of writing. Blog entries vary in length, but generally are 400-600 words in length. Blogs do not have to be formal—express your voice in writing and be creative with the blog format!

But DO proofread and spellcheck to avoid simple grammatical errors. Please be sure to fact-check your writing, especially if specific events or people are mentioned. Keep in mind that the goal of the Honors College student blog is to encourage students to share their stories, ideas, and writing in a respectful and professional manner and fulfill the Ampersand mission:  “To highlight the achievements of Honors College students, staff, and faculty, to report on Honors College events, and to provide a forum for students and faculty to share interesting experiences and opinions, all for the purpose of fostering a sense of community and celebrating diversity among the constituents of the Honors College.”

All submissions will be reviewed and edited by the Ampersand board before being published online. We retain editorial authority to reject submissions at our discretion. The Ampersand board will select the top three winners.

The deadline for the blog contest is Thursday, November 5th by 5:00 PM. Submissions should be emailed to uicampersand@gmail.com. You are welcome to submit more than one blog entry for the contest. All submissions should be attached as a Word document and include:

    - Your full name, major and year at UIC

    - A creative title for your piece!

    - A high resolution photo that you have permission to use to go with your submission

Please visit the Ampersand website (http://ampersand.honors.uic.edu/category/blog-posts/) to read past blogs.

Questions can be sent to uicampersand@gmail.com.

  • Submit to Brainchild literary and arts magazine, Deadline extended to 2/5

    B R A I N C H I L D

The editors of the premiere undergraduate-only literary and arts magazine in the United States are seeking submissions for their 2016 issue.

NOW ACCEPTING SUBMISSIONS IN: FICTION, POETRY, CREATIVE NONFICTION, ESSAYS, PHOTOGRAPHY, FINE ART

Brainchild's primary prerequisite for submissions is quality, and our standards are the calling card of our magazine. We represent the Mid-East Honors Association, which means that we only publish honors students in the mid-east region of the country—from Illinois to Pennsylvania and from Michigan down to Virginia. This area comprises over 200 honors colleges and programs whose students we can only accept submissions from. And though our submission base is small, our readership is diverse and growing, and this has helped build Brainchild into the premier undergraduate-only literary and arts magazine in the country. This means that any individual submitting to us will have a higher chance of publication in our magazine than in almost any other, and they have the chance to be read by a highly intelligent readership that is committed to the arts. If your work is of a superior quality—you will find a home in Brainchild.

We encourage you to go to brainchildmagazine.org and submit to us through our Submittable page. There you will find a list of writers and artists whose work best fits our publication. Our submission period has been extended until 2/5.

If you have any questions or queries regarding content, please feel free to email us at editor@brainchildmagazine.org, and we will get back to you as soon as we can. You can also keep up with any news we release by following our accounts on Facebook (www.facebook.com/KSUbrainchild) and Twitter (@ksu_brainchild). We look forward to your submissions and the opportunity to work with you.
