    Esther Grimm, Executive Director, 3Arts

    Marcia Festen has more than 20 years of experience in the nonprofit sector. Currently, she serves as Director of the Arts Work Fund for Organizational Development, a funding collaborative which supports capacity building efforts for small arts and cultural organizations. She also has a consulting practice for nonprofits. She is co-author of Level Best: A Step-by-Step Guide to Evaluation for Grassroots Nonprofits (2004) and How Effective Nonprofits Work: A Guide for Donors, Board Members and Foundation Officers (2002). Her publications include: Leveraging New Funds to Support Human Rights Organizations (2001) and Community Panels for Youth—A Community Based Alternative to Juvenile Justice (2001).

    Esther Grimm’s lifelong career in the arts spans administration, museum education, arts education, and philanthropy. She is the executive director of 3Arts, a public grantmaking organization dedicated to supporting women artists, artists of color, and artists with disabilities working in the performing, teaching, and visual arts in Chicago. She authored six children’s non-fiction, art-activity books focusing on the art of ancient and living cultures.

    Retired Vice Chairman, Investment Banking, Merrill Lynch & Co.

    Tuesday, April 7, 9:30 – 10:45 am in 104 Lincoln Hall

    Charles Ashby (Chuck) Lewis is chairman of the Lewis-Sebring Family Foundation and Managing General Partner of Coach House Capital, his family office. He is a retired Vice Chairman, Investment Banking, of Merrill Lynch & Co.

    Mr. Lewis is a Trustee of the University of Chicago. He is involved with the UChicago Urban Education Institute and is a member of the Board of Directors of its UChicago Impact LLC unit and of the Governing Board of its UChicago Charter School unit. He is also a member and a life member of the Visiting Committees to the Division of the Social Sciences and to the College at the University, respectively.

    He is a Life Trustee of Amherst and of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, a Life Director of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Illinois Chapter, and a Trustee of the Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago.

    Mr. Lewis was a member of the National Finance Committee for both Obama presidential campaigns and writes occasional commentaries called “Obamagrams.”

    Mr. Lewis was educated at Amherst College and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He also received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Amherst.

  • Faculty Fellow Relationship Workshop, Thurs. 4/9

    All first-year students will be assigned a Faculty Fellow by the summer after your freshman year.  Come to this interactive workshop to learn more about the role of a Faculty Fellow, tips for communicating and building a relationship with your Fellow, and other advice and strategies for building a strong relationship with your Fellow. This workshop is designed primarily for first-year students and students who are new to the Honors College, but any Honors College student is welcome to attend.

  • OSSP: Graduate Fellowships Info Session for Juniors, Tues. 4/14

    Are you interested in studying or teaching abroad after graduating? Planning on graduate study in the U.S.? Not sure what your options are? Attend an information session to learn more! 

    Going abroad….The British scholarships, Fulbright Fellowships and other post graduate opportunities can offer you the chance to realize your dreams abroad! If you are interested in going abroad in fall 2016, start asking questions and exploring your options now. 

    The British scholarships include the Rhodes, Marshall, Gates Cambridge and Mitchell. These awards give you the opportunity to study at a British university for 1-4 years. Strong candidates typically have a 3.7 GPA or higher, a record of service and leadership, and strong academic qualifications for what they are proposing to study in the UK. The British scholarships have a campus deadline of April 30. 

    Post-graduate opportunities…Fulbright offers the opportunity to teach or do research/study abroad. There is no GPA cutoff. Other opportunities such as the NSF Graduate Fellowship, JET program for teaching English in Japan or Illinois Legislative Internship provide myriad opportunities for post-baccalaureate education and growth. Join us at one of the following sessions to learn more about these opportunities.

  • Special Collections Tour: Rare Artifacts of the Atlantic Slave Trade, Tues. 4/21

    Interested in seeing some of the historic sources behind the current-day events in Ferguson and Staten Island?  Come to Special Collections on the third floor of the Daley Library at 5 on Tuesday, April 21, and see rare documents that help us to learn about the reality of the 18th and 19th century Atlantic Slave Trade. With a guided tour and open discussion with Professor Nancy Cirillo.

    This event can fulfill a requirement for HON 101 Students (UIC Experience – Inquiring Minds Category) or for PAP-H first-year (Category 3) or third-year checklists (Cultural Engagement category.

  • A Professor’s Perspective on Common Questions About Research, Capstone, and Contacting Professors, Wed. 4/22

    Mark Grabiner, professor in Kinesiology & Nutrition and Bioengineering, director of the Clinical Biomechanics and Rehabilitation Laboratory, and Associate Vice Chancellor for Research, will be coming to share his perspective on some student-driven topics, including:    

    When should I begin thinking about my Capstone project? How should I contact a professor for the purposes of getting engaged in a Capstone project? How do I narrow my interest for a Capstone?

    Come with your questions to this interactive session!  Professor Grabiner is an Honors College Fellow, and six students have completed their Capstones in his lab since 2009; come learn from his extensive experience!

  • Want to go abroad to study, research, or teach English after graduation? Fulbright Info Session, Thurs. 4/23

    Immediately after World War II in 1946, Congress created the Fulbright Program, to foster mutual understanding among nations through educational and cultural exchange. Students participate in English teaching or a self-designed program of study that can include research, university coursework, art projects, language study and more. The grants are available to over 150 countries, and generally provide round-trip transportation, language or orientation courses, maintenance for the academic year, and supplemental health and accident insurance. Applicants must be U.S. citizens who hold a BA or BS by the beginning of the grant period. The UIC deadline will be early in the Fall semester of 2015 for the 2016-17 year, so now is the perfect time for Juniors to start exploring the option!

  • Honors Capstone General Information Workshops, Fri. 4/24 and Mon. 4/27

    The General Capstone Information Session provides an opportunity for you to learn more about the Capstone requirement, brainstorm possible topics or ideas for your Capstone, and talk with an Honors College Associate Dean or Postdoctoral Fellow about your Capstone.  This workshop is intended for everyone from Seniors starting on their Capstones now to freshman who want to learn more about the requirement to be prepared in the future.

    Biological Sciences NSF-Capstone Poster Session

  • Chicago Signature Honors: The Tempest at Chicago Shakespeare Theatre

    HURRY! RSVP by Friday, September 25 for THE TEMPEST at Chicago Shakespeare Theatre!

    What? Shakespeare’s The Tempest

    When? Friday, November 6th at 7:30pm

    Where? Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, 800 East Grand Avenue (at Navy Pier)

    Why? Two reasons:

    1) The theatre space itself: “The unique architecture of our 500-seat courtyard-style theater was inspired by the theaters in early modern England where Shakespeare’s plays were first staged, and evokes the design of Shakespeare’s Globe in London and the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Swan Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon.” –See more

    2) The play features a deserted island, magic, illusion, and spirits; the production features music by Tom Waits; and, simply stated, Prospero is one of Shakespeare’s most compelling characters.

    General Capstone Information Session: Monday 9/28, 3 - 4pm, 121 BH

    The General Capstone Information Session provides an opportunity for you to learn more about the Capstone requirement, brainstorm possible topics or ideas for your Capstone, and talk with an Honors College Associate Dean or Postdoctoral Fellow about your Capstone.  This workshop is intended for everyone from Seniors starting on their Capstones now to freshman who want to learn more about the requirement to be prepared in the future.

  • Inside the Shark Tank: Lessons in Entrepreneurship from the Founder of Spike Ball, Wed. 9/30

  • "Future of Chicago" Lecture Series

    The University of Illinois at Chicago presents the annual “Future of Chicago” lecture series, which brings civic leaders to campus to examine issues with students and the community.

    Topics focus on the social, economic and political conditions of the Chicago metropolitan region. Former Chicago alderman Dick Simpson, UIC professor of political science, moderates the series, hosted by the UIC department of political science since 1976.  Series co-sponsors are the UIC Institute for Policy and Civic Engagement and UIC Honors College.

    All lectures are free and open to the public. Unless otherwise noted, lectures are from noon to 12:50 p.m. in Behavioral Sciences Building, Room 140, 1007 W. Harrison St. For more information, call (312) 413-3780.

  • Future of Chicago Lecture: Jesus "Chuy" Garcia (10/21)

    The Honors College is a proud cosponsor the Future of Chicago lecture series. This program brings current and former leaders to campus to discuss the current state and future of Chicago. Honors College students are known to be involved in and passionate about issues in the city and so we offer a chance for you to meet these speakers in a small-group lunch to be held after the lecture series. The talks occur from 12:00-12:50 in BSB 140 and the lunches will be held immediately afterward from 1-2pm. The lunches are limited to 15 students and seats are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.

    The tentative schedule for Fall 2015 is:

    Wednesday, October 21: County Commissioner and former Mayoral Candidate Jesus “Chuy” Garcia, RSVP by 10/16. Note: Lunch is cancelled for 10/21, but you may still attend the lecture at 12pm!

  • NSF/Biology Research Program for 1st and 2nd year students, Fri. 10/30

    Attention all freshmen and sophomores majoring in Biological Sciences:

    Are you interested in getting involved in research in the biological sciences? There will be an organizational meeting for the NSF/Biology/Capstone Program on Friday, October 30 at 3:30 p.m. in the Quiet Study Room (BH 121). The meeting will include more details about the program and a dozen faculty members from the department will be present to briefly describe their research programs and interests. The presentations are expected to last a total of approximately 2 hours.

    This program offers a two-and-a-half-year participation in biology research on campus and provides one way that Honors College students can fulfill their Capstone requirements. Students participating in the NSF/Biology/Capstone Program are associated with a research group in the Department of Biological Sciences and conduct experiments in ongoing research projects sponsored by the National Science Foundation.

    Juniors: Are you thinking of entering a career immediately after you graduate from UIC?  Have you begun preparing for your job search?  This is your year!  This specially-developed workshop will walk you through the steps you should take during the school year to ensure that you are prepared to conduct a thorough and successful job search in your field.  Although this session is geared towards juniors, students of all years are welcome to attend.  The workshop is open to students in ALL majors!
