  • Honors Summer Housing Scholarship Due Mon. 5/5

We are pleased to announce that the Honors College is able to offer a limited number of Honors Summer Housing Scholarships on a competitive basis. These housing scholarships will cover the cost of a double room in either TBH or MRH (apartment-style housing on the South Campus) for the period of the eight-week summer session (June 16-August 8, 2014). Please also attach supporting documentation. (For example, if you are taking a class, attach a copy of your enrollment verification. If you are doing faculty supervised research, attach the email or other agreement that verifies the arrangement (this could be an email already exchanged, or a short email for this specific purpose).) Feel free to include in your statement any additional personal or financial information that might be relevant to the Honors College when selecting those most deserving of a summer housing scholarship.

Hurry: applications are due immediately! Email the application to Associate Dean Sara Hall at sahall@uic.edu by 8 am on Monday, May 5th. Use the subject line: SUMMER HOUSING SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION.

This scholarship only covers housing and does NOT cover the cost of food, or tuition for enrollment in a course, or transportation to research sites, or research supplies, etc.

Students receiving this scholarship will be expected to give back to the community of the Honors College and UIC Summer College by helping welcome students and prepare welcoming materials on select dates in July and early August, barring conflicts with class and research schedules.

  • Scholarships Available for Summer and Fall International Experiences (Deadline TODAY! 4/15)

  • 2015-16 Journalism Internship with NPR and the Washington Post, Apply by April 30

In memory of Stone and Holt Weeks, following their tragic deaths in 2009, NPR and The Washington Post have partnered to give a promising individual the opportunity to launch a career in journalism. This fellowship consists of two sessions, 12 weeks at The Washington Post and 12 weeks at NPR, with training in reporting for print, radio and the web.

The Fellowship is both educational and experiential. At NPR, the Fellow is trained in radio and digital production and report on the National, Washington or Business desk. The Washington Post session gives Fellow experience with publishing original stories and other news content. At both organizations, the Fellow has individual sessions with leading journalists and receive guidance on the most important skills of the trade.

The Stone and Holt Weeks Fellow learns about the role of journalism in "making the world a better place." This Fellowship offers a broad exposure to the relationship between journalism and public education, citizenship, social change and democracy, and will learn that a major aim of journalism, as expressed a century ago by author Finley Peter Dunne, is "to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable."

    Candidate Qualifications
Anyone who will have received a bachelor's degree by July 15 is eligible to apply for the Fellowship. Individuals with additional education and experience are welcome to apply. While a demonstrated appetite for journalism is desired, there is no specific requirement for a journalism degree or experience as a journalist.

    Application Process
Applications must be postmarked by April 30. Finalists will be notified in early June and invited to travel to Washington, D.C., for an interview with the fellowship committee. Travel costs for the interview will be paid by NPR and The Washington Post. The selected candidate will be notified by the end of June and asked to confirm his or her commitment early in July. The fellowship begins after Labor Day.

  • Fulbright Student Award and Schwarzman Scholarship (Teach, Research, or Study Abroad after graduation!), Info Session 9/3, Application Deadline 9/11

As the fall term begins, it's time to think about applying for the Fulbright Student Award and the Schwarzman Scholarship! Both of these awards provide exciting opportunities for going abroad to further your education.  They both seek high achieving, highly motivated students.

There is a Fulbright and Schwarzman information session on Thursday, Sept. 3 at noon in 850 UH or you can follow up with one of our staff (below) if you have questions.

    The Fulbright Student Award
The Fulbright sends students abroad to do a program of study or research in one of around 160 countries OR to teach English for a year in one of over 50 countries. You must have your bachelor's degree before you leave, but you can apply at any point in your life once you have that first degree. The UIC campus deadline is Sept. 11. There is still time to apply! You can find detailed information about the Fulbright at http://us.fulbrightonline.org/fulbright-us-student-program

    Fulbright Study/Research Grant
You put together a proposal of study or research that would take 10-12 months to perform. Some countries require you to know the language well, others are flexible. Programs of study can include classes, research projects, library work, observations, training in the creative arts, surveys, lab work - in short, anything that would help you study or learn more about your proposed topic.

    The English Teaching Assistantship
Fulbright also offers students the chance to teach English.  Options exist at the high school, elementary and the college level. Many countries have no language requirement. The English Teaching Assistants (ETA) are generally students who have some teaching experience, and believe that the ETA experience will help to prepare them for what they are doing in the future.

    The Schwarzman Scholarship
The Schwarzman offers a select group of students the opportunity to earn a one year master’s degree at Tsinghua University in China. Candidates need not be Chinese speakers. Strong candidates will have excellent academic qualifications and an interest in learning about China as well as leadership experience. Enrolled students must be nominated by UIC. UIC’s campus deadline is Sept 14. There is still time to apply! You can find detailed information at http://schwarzmanscholars.org/
