  Introduction to Cancer Research Careers 2-day visit to the National Cancer Institute and internship opportunity deadline is coming up on November 18th.

  NCI will sponsor a visit for ICRC participants to the NIH campus in February 2016 for an opportunity to learn about the research being conducted at the NCI. Participants may be scheduled for interviews with NCI Investigators recruiting summer or post-baccalaureate interns. Internship offers will be made by individual investigators through the ICRC program office.   Intern Responsibilities: The SRCD Policy Intern would assist staff with a number of projects, including helping with these projects: Preparation of Policy Update, a monthly e-newsletter sent to SRCD members focusing on federal policy developments related to children and families

  Qualifications: The SRCD office in Washington is recruiting an advanced undergraduate student who has had coursework related to child development and public policy. He/she will also need to be both flexible and proactive in his/her approach to work, and comfortable working independently and collaboratively within a small office environment. The ideal candidate will have had experience in conducting research, including developing and collecting data from questionnaires or surveys; coursework in research design and methodology; and some experience with data analysis.

  Compensation: The SRCD Policy Intern would be paid $12/hour. The internship entails 16 hours of paid work each week. The intern’s work schedule would be flexible and would be developed in conjunction with SRCD staff to accommodate his/her other summer commitments.

  The study with which the intern would be assisting are part of the Biopsychosocial Mechanisms and Health Outcomes Program.  The primary project for which we currently need volunteers involves a technology-based psychosocial intervention for men with advanced prostate cancer.

  This is a great time to begin plan for your Study Abroad, make scholarship applications, and connect with family and friends around crowdfunding.  There are two scholarships Kathryn want you to know about and she also wanted to share a couple of tips for fundraising.  The application for the Paris program is attached and also available online. 

   

  Due on January 11, 2017:

  Fund for Education Abroad.  This is for non-traditional locations for study abroad in programs that are both immersive and rigorous.  This fits this program (although Paris is traditional) because it is immersive, rigorous and non-traditional in that students are interning within the social services.  Emphasize that an internship in the social services is a unique and non-traditional destination for studies in France.  It is important to note that this scholarship only supports academically rigorous and immersive study abroad programs.

  Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship from the Department of State. This is for Pell eligible students.  The application will open mid January and you can begin preparations by looking at the website.

  Tips for fundraising:

  Apply for scholarships,  use your financial aid, and use crowdfunding through a site or in person.  Be specific, describe your program and costs, and request airline miles donations for flights; miles all now have expiration dates so someone may share miles they cannot use.  

   

  Steps to take in no specific order to have an early application for this program:

  1)  Attend a First Step at Study Abroad  if you have not already

  2)  Meet with Irina Krymova at Study Abroad

  3)  Attend a Program Presentation with Kathryn and have an individual meeting with Kathryn 

  4)  Begin applying for scholarships at the Special Scholarships Office and seek others outside of UIC

  Illinois JusticeCorps is an innovative new program to enhance access to justice for the growing number of unrepresented people in the courts by empowering and training student volunteers to help people without lawyers with the court system.
