  • UIC Heritage Garden 2016 Summer Internship, Apply by 3/18

    The UIC Heritage Garden is a hands-on learning project with an internship program. Paid student interns work with faculty, staff, and community members to connect horticulture with environmental sustainability, cultural diversity, and social justice. There are currently 8 satellite gardens on the east side of campus. The six Centers for Cultural Understanding and Social Change (CCUSC) collaborate on this project with program infrastructure provided by the Latino Cultural Center. The internship program is funded by the UIC Sustainability Fee.

    The ideal candidates should be equally interested in working in the garden as well as on the other priorities of the project, including its research and community engagement components.

  • UIC Gallery 400 Internships for various majors, Apply by 7/15 for Fall 2014

    The Gallery 400 internship program welcomes students and recent graduates who wish to broaden their education and professional experience by working at one of the nation’s most vibrant university galleries, showcasing work at the leading edge of contemporary art, architecture, and design. Under the guidance of gallery staff, interns assist in routine work that ranges from special projects and research to clerical support.

    Internships require a commitment of 15-20 hours per week and are typically a semester in length. A major in art history or fine art is not required. All internships are unpaid.

    Internship areas include: Archive/website, Communications, Community Engagement, Curatorial, Development, Exhibition Preparation, Graphic Design, Photography, Video Archive

    Application Deadlines (three yearly):

    • Summer Semester (May-August): Apply by April 4
    • Fall Semester (August-December): Apply by July 15
    • Spring Semester (January-May): Apply by November 13

  • UIC Energy Initiative Internship, Apply by 10/29

    The UIC Energy Initiative is seeking a student intern to carry out research at SiNode Systems.  This intern will work closely with the core research team to maintain a high volume of material production and to advance research initiatives.  Interns will be accountable for a variety of day-to-day lab operations. 

    The intern will be exposed to the entire process of creating SiNode silicon-graphene technology for li-ion batteries.   Not only will they be trained to be adept on day-to-day lab operations, but they will also have the chance to advance their independent research initiative. They will also be provided with active feedback and mentoring from the SiNode team, and will work very closely with the core team to maintain optimal production standards. SiNode typically hires full time employees out of its intern pool as well.

    UIC Office of Sustainability

    Aim of Internship:
    Familiarize students interested in urban sustainability, bicycle transportation planning, or urban planning generally with the components of university bicycle planning. Objective of internship is to build on existing bike planning at UIC.

    Duties:
    Review of selected peer university bike plans to inform UIC‐appropriate sections.
    Plan should be consistent with UIC Climate Action Plan and Master Planning, and
    existing plans. Sections could include:

    • Vision, goals and objectives
    • Infrastructure overview and parking expansion plan for West Side
    • Educational events
    • Strategic partnerships
    • Bicycle Friendly University recommendations

    Required Skills:

    • Interest in and knowledge of bicycle issues
    • Excellent communication skills
    • Adobe Suite – Illustrator/InDesign
    • Photoshop
    • Good organizational skills
    • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

    The UIC AANAPISI (Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institutions) Initiative seeks 2 paid Outreach Interns for Fall 2014.

    The AANAPISI program is fully funded by the U.S. Department of Education and aims to support recruitment, retention, and graduation of Asian American and Pacific Islander students at UIC. The intern will help to support the grant’s outreach initiatives, which includes: aiding with AANAPISI events; increasing awareness of AANAPISI programs; and assisting with the demographic survey outreach.

    Position Available:                Undergraduate Outreach Intern

    Hours/Week:                         5-10 hours/week

    Period of Appointment:         Fall 2014

    Duties:      

    1. Raising awareness of AANAPISI events and activities on campus
    2. Providing outreach assistance to AANAPISI staff and personnel

    Qualifications:

    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
    • Applicants must be well-organized, resourceful, and energetic
    • Previous experience in working with campus organizations is a plus
    • Some evening hours may be required

    Compensation:                      $10/hour

    AANAPISI Educational Employment Grant

    This position is part of the AANAPISI Educational Employment Grant program offered by the UIC AANAPISI Initiative, Student Employment, and the Career Services Office.  Concurrent to their employment, student employees, along with their supervisors, will engage in a guided career development framework aimed at building lifelong career skills to support lifelong professional success. The UIC AANAPISI Initiative is fully funded by the U.S. Department of Education’s Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institutions (AANAPISI) Program.*

    Eligibility: Due to the federal funding restrictions for the UIC AANAPISI Initiative, student employees must be non-international undergraduate UIC students who are enrolled (part-time or full-time) during the academic year. In the summer, students do not have to be enrolled as long as they were enrolled in spring and will be enrolled in the fall. While students who have Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) (http://www.uic.edu/depts/oaa/diversity/sdsb.html) are eligible for student employment at UIC, we regret that DACA students are not eligible for employment in this program.

    2) A doctoral candidate in Disability Studies at UIC is working on a dissertation that addresses social relations of older adults with intellectual disabilities from a life course perspective.  The project will include the development of a 15-20 minute DVD with the life stories of six individuals with intellectual disabilities. This DVD will be used as an education and advocacy tool at agencies and universities. Seeking a research assistant to help collect video materials and edit final video beginning this spring.     As you may already know, The Washington Center is an educational, non-profit organization based in Washington, D.C. We partner with colleges and universities to provide students from most majors with an opportunity to intern in the nation's capital while earning academic credit at their home institution.

    A TWC representative, Sara Biggs, will be visiting your campus on Thursday, April 7th and will host an information session in the Office of Career Services Conference Room at 3:00 p.m.

    Scholarships for Illinois students are still available. Students attending the University of Illinois at Chicago may be eligible to receive up to $8,000 in scholarships for TWC's upcoming summer term. There is no additional paperwork required beyond our standard application.

    The Kip Tiernan Social Justice Fellowship honors the lifelong work of the founder of Rosie’s Place, which was established in Boston 41 years ago as the first women’s shelter in the nation.

    The Fellowship is awarded annually to a woman with new ideas, talent and energy to develop and carry out a special project in New England that will improve the lives of poor and homeless women and further the mission of Rosie’s Place.

    Desired projects could include the following:    

    •  A policy initiative or campaign    

    •  A project aimed at reducing poverty and homelessness    

    •  The development and implementation of a project that fills gaps in existing services in areas such as legal advocacy, jobs or economic development housing, shelter and immigration, and in populations such as LGBT, young adults and elders

    The Fellowship is 12 months long and is awarded on a one-time basis to an eligible woman. Fellows are paid a $40,000 stipend.

    The Horizons Fellowship supports 10 outstanding university students in their pursuit to become leaders in technology. The program provides immersive software engineering and web/mobile development courses geared towards high-achieving college students. No computer science background needed and we invite business and liberal arts students to apply! Our curriculum, developed by ex-Salesforce, Optimizely, and D.E. Shaw engineers, is designed to teach students how to build web, mobile (iOS and Android) and desktop applications. We have a 4-month spring program and a 3-month summer program in San Francisco, Boston, and Philadelphia.

    The Horizons Mentor Network includes current/past employees of firms such as Google, Facebook, Uber, Airbnb, Snapchat, and more. As a Horizons student/graduate, you will have permanent access to this exceptional group of mentors to help with career choices, general mentorship, and more.

    Two graduates of our latest summer cohort have been placed at NASA and Thrive Capital within 2 weeks of the program. Others are currently interviewing for engineering roles at Lyft, Airbnb, Andreessen Horowitz, Asana, Heap, Slack and more.

    Past Horizonites have come from a variety of schools and backgrounds. Students have hailed from Harvard, Princeton, UPenn/Wharton, Columbia, Northwestern, Brown, Michigan and more. We've welcomed National Math Olympiad winners, USA Computing Olympiad participants, renowned college entrepreneurs, students with perfect SAT/ACT scores, talented designers, photographers, and more as part of our previous cohort. Our program requires no formal computer science background.
