  • The 2017 Woodrow Wilson Teaching Fellowship, Deadline Tues, Nov. 29 and Mon, Jan. 23

The 2017 Woodrow Wilson Teaching Fellowship competition is under way, with two more application deadlines available for interested candidates: November 29 and January 23.

As many of you know, the WW Teaching Fellowships offer intensive master’s-level teacher preparation, including a year of classroom experience, for exceptionally qualified candidates. Eligible applicants may be graduating seniors or recent grads/alumni; they should have a commitment to teaching in the urban and rural schools that most often lack strong STEM teachers; and they must have completed STEM degrees.

The Fellowships are available this year in Georgia and New Jersey (with more states now in the works). Fellows attend a partner institution in one of these states and commit to teach for three years in the same state, but they need not be from that state. Fellows receive a generous stipend ($30,000 or more, depending on location) to complete the master’s program. Throughout their three-year teaching commitment, they continue to receive mentoring and support from both their universities and their schools.

To learn more, take a look at the program’s website, download a poster, attend a webinar, or write directly to Danielle DiFiore, one of our WW Teaching Fellowship recruiters, atdifiore@woodrow.org. We’re always happy to hear from you, and we look forward to applications from your best candidates!

  • Guild Literary Complex Paid Part-Time Project Coordinator Position, Apply by Sun. 2/1

The Guild Literary Complex [Guild] is seeking a creative and collaborative Project Coordinator [Coordinator] to organize and implement Brooksday. Brooksday was created in 2013 to honor and sustain the work of Gwendolyn Brooks. Brooks is one of the most important of American poets—an artist who broke through racial barriers in our literature and publishing, who nurtured many younger writers, and who with poetic virtuosity and courage changed American poetry. Brooksday is held annually on June 7, the date of Mrs. Brooks’ birth, and includes readings of her poetry by invited guests, along with music and special performances.

This is a paid part-time position that begins approximately mid-February and continues through mid-June (approximately four months).

    Individual Responsibilities

    • Work closely with the volunteer Brooksday Planning Committee [Committee] to develop and implement the entire day of activities.
    • Manage and track program logistics, including but not limited to keeping an updated list of tasks, deadlines, and person(s) responsible for completing each task, organizing a complete schedule for the day, and coordinating event volunteers.
    • Correspond with readers, including sending invitations, collecting responses and required information (bios, photos, etc), and maintaining an accurate contact list.
    • Organize the detailed reading schedule.
    • Manage new and existing relationships with Brooksday partners, as required.
    • Maintain regular communication with Committee and Director of the Guild, and attend all Committee meetings.
    • Contribute to basic event marketing and maintain event social media presence.
    • Provide a post event report and follow-up with partners and readers, as necessary.

    Qualifications

    • Experience presenting live, public events.
    • Excellent organizational and project management skills.
    • Ability to work independently, and with others in a collaborative setting.
    • Strong communication skills (written and oral), and a professional demeanor.
    • Resourceful, inventive, and positive.
    • Computer skills for word processing, data entry, spreadsheet management, and social media.
    • Interest or experience in literary arts preferred but not required.

    Hours and Pay

The position pays $15/hour for up to 265 hours. The weekly time commitment for the position varies and is based on the following estimated schedule:

    25 hours            February
    45 hours            March
    70 hours            April
    80 hours            May
    45 hours            June

These hours are not guaranteed. Pay will be determined based on actual hours worked. Hours will be submitted with detail to the Director of the Guild every two weeks.

The Project Coordinator will be present for the entire Brooksday event, included set-up and break down. Brooksday 2015 is scheduled for June 7, 12-6pm.

Application deadline is February 1, 2015.

    Email applications are strongly encouraged.

  • Jobs with Change Corps

Change Corps is looking for talented Change-makers for our 1 year, paid, training academy for activists

Find out more information at www.changecorps.org or contact Claudia Iglesias, Change Corps Recruitment Director, jobs@changecorps.org.

WE WANT CHANGE. A more equal and democratic America. A greener America that doesn’t let ideology blind us to science. One that respects our freedom as individuals while realizing that we’re all in this together. Yet, too often we see change stuck on so many of the issues that we care about. That’s where Change Corps comes in.

Change Corps is a paid, one-year, full-immersion training program in grassroots organizing. When Change Corps organizers complete their training, they know how to organize people to get change unstuck on the issues they’re passionate about, and will have an opportunity to become part of a wave of new organizers who will keep pushing and prodding our country forward for years to come.

What will you work on? Organizers receive eight weeks of classroom training and spend most of the year gaining hands-on field experience working to make a difference on issues like women’s rights, gun violence, immigration reform, voting rights, marriage equality and money in politics. Organizers will work on three to five different campaigns throughout the year in cities across the country, providing critical field support for partner groups leading the charge on these issues and many more. This past year, our campaign partners included the National Education Association, MoveOn.org, and Everytown for Gun Safety.

Training You’ll learn the skills necessary to plan town hall meetings, build and work with coalitions united for a common cause, set up and speak at press conferences, recruit and train volunteers, collect petitions, direct a canvass office, and much more. You’ll learn how to mobilize a community toward a common goal and build the kind of support and grassroots action that persuades decision-makers to stop obstructing change and embrace it instead. And you’ll learn these skills from people like Bill McKibben of 350.org, Van Jones of the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights and former host of CNN’s Crossfire, Justin Ruben of MoveOn.org, and Cecile Richards of Planned Parenthood.

Salary and benefits The target annual compensation for this position is $25,500. We also offer an excellent training program, a competitive benefits package, and have opportunities for advancement.

Qualifications Does social change get you fired up? We’re looking for:

Young leaders who are ready to take on some of the biggest challenges of our day.

Bright, talented, passionate people with a strong work ethic.

Problem solvers who don’t just see problems but envision creative solutions.

A strong commitment to working toward goals and getting results.

Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
