    What is the Fulbright grant?

The Fulbright Scholarship sends students abroad to do a program of study or research in one of around 140 countries OR to teach English for a year in one of over 50 countries. You must have your bachelor's degree before you leave, but you can apply at any point in your life once you have that first degree. For a Fulbright Full Grant you put together a proposal of study or research that would take 10-12 months to perform. Some countries require you to know the language well, others are flexible on language requirements. Programs of study can include classes, research projects, library work, observations, training in the creative arts, surveys, lab work - in short, anything that would help you study or learn more about your proposed topic.

Tell me more about the teaching grants...

Fulbright also offers students the chance to apply to teach English.  In some countries you would teach in a high school, in others elementary and in others at the college level. Language requirements vary from country to country. Many countries have no language requirement. The English Teaching Assistants (ETA) are generally students who have some teaching experience, and believe that the ETA experience will help to prepare them for what they are doing in the future.

    Why should I consider it?
The Fulbright name is well respected in the U.S. and beyond. Past scholars have considered it an experience of a lifetime. They learn about new cultures or deepen their knowledge of one they already were acquainted with. They make new friends and engage in an in-depth teaching or learning experience that gives them depth of knowledge and skills in their chosen field, and helps set the stage for greater independence in their next career move. They develop a more sophisticated understanding of their host country, the U.S. and themselves.

    Questions?

OSSP staff welcome questions from students and advisors about the Fulbright. Please direct questions about the full grant to Beth Powers at bpowers@uic.edu; questions about the teaching assistantships to Sheena Miller, sheena@uic.edu; and questions about graduate students applying to Marie Khan at mkhanj@uic.edu

The play’s synopsis from the website:

“Billy’s intellectual and proudly eccentric English family is its own tiny empire: private languages, in-jokes and fiery arguments. Billy, deaf since birth, is the only one who truly listens. When he meets his girlfriend Sylvia, he is introduced to a larger Deaf community, which sparks a struggle for self-identity and rebellion against his family. Tribesis sharp, witty story about finding the place where you can be heard and a family that feels like home.”

    About Scott Dikkers:
Scott Dikkers is the founding editor of The Onion, and its longest-serving editor-in-chief. He developed its now-famous news parody format and launched it as the world's first humor website in 1996. Ranked by Time Magazine as one of the world’s top 50 “Digital Elite,” Scott is also the creator of the successful entertainment website The AV Club and author of several New York Times bestsellers, including "Our Dumb Century, "Our Dumb World" and "I Went to College and it was okay."

    November 10, Daley Library, 3pm, Room 1-470

Lecture and Discussion in conjunction with HON 124: Readings in the Atlantic Slave Trade and HON 201: Who Was Uncle Tom? as well as the Visualizing Uncle Tom's Cabin exhibit in the UIC Library and UIC Moving Image Arts.

    About Dr. Rob Prince Obey:
Dr. Obey currently teaches Social Sciences courses at Bowling Green State University in Huron, Ohio where he has also taught both lower and upper levels courses in Ethnic Studies, Cinema Studies, American Culture, and Popular Culture. Dr.Obey received his doctorate in American Culture Studies from Bowling Green in 2009 where he specialized in audience reception theory and African American Cinema. His dissertation critiqued the 1983 Brian DePalma cult film Scarface and its relationship to urban male street identity construction. He is currently revising that work for publication as a book.

In 2013 he was awarded an Andrew Mellon Foundation Summer Fellowship in African American History from the University of Chicago’s Black Metropolis Research Consortium, during which time he conducted research on the etymology of the intra-racial epitaph “Uncle Tom” and its beginnings with Harriet Beecher Stowe’s 1852 novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin.

Since 2007 he has curated and hosted African American themed film series on several college campuses, including Illinois State, the University of Toledo, and at Bowling Green, where his annual ten week spring film series “Social Justice and the Moving Image” has become a staple.

Dr. Obey’s research interests also include the history of Black Loyalists during the American Revolution and the design of socio-cultural informed courses that meld popular culture with social justice issues. To that end he is currently creating a course based on his critique of the representations of race, ethnicity, gender, and authority presented in the television series The Walking Dead.
