Survey of Latina/o students' experiences, perceptions, and needs administered by the Rafael Cintrón Ortiz Latino Cultural Center - due by April 19.

UIC is in the process of officially becoming a recognized "Hispanic Serving Institution." An important designation that will open doors to new resources and opportunities to help better serve our students.

If you are a UIC Latina/o student, please help us by completing the survey below. It should take you no more than 15 minutes to finish. We are looking to learn and collect data in regards to your experiences, perceptions and needs.

We encourage any Latino students to take some time to complete this survey by April 19, 2015.

As an incentive, students who finish and submit the survey will be eligible for a raffle to win a gift card from the UIC bookstore. One $200 card, one $100 card and five $50 cards will be raffled.

Overview

A bold spirit of innovation has emerged among artists as they seek to engage audiences with narrative worlds that leverage new technologies, visual aesthetics, social media cultures, immersive designs, game theory, transmedia activism and shifts in the boundaries of authorship. In just the last 10 years, the media landscape has been transformed and storytellers are both exploring as well as constructing this new terrain, pioneering new connections with audiences and re-structuring story design.

The Sundance Institute’s New Frontier program was created to identify and foster independent artists innovating in the art and form of storytelling at the convergence of film, art, media, live performance, music and technology; to provide a place for audience to view and participate in their work; and to build a community of collaborators across diverse disciplines to push the boundaries of story.

The New Frontier program began in 2007 with the formation of an exhibition and programming space at the Sundance Film Festival. The dynamic work presented at New Frontier inspired the Sundance Institute to deepen its support of storytellers pioneering new mediums and methodologies by establishing the New Frontier Story Lab in 2011.

Summer Law Program for Undergraduates at Florida State University, Apply by 3/28

Thinking about law school? The Florida State University College of Law is currently accepting applications for its 2014 Summer for Undergraduates Program, which provides students an inside look at law school and the legal profession. The program will take place May 19-June 12. All undergraduate students, except those graduating in spring 2014, are eligible to apply.

Approximately 60 students will be chosen from the applicant pool to participate in the intensive four-week program. Daily lecture classes taught by a Florida State Law professor will familiarize students with the functions of the American legal system and the process by which conflicts are resolved. Legal Writing classes will help students develop their verbal and written communication skills. In addition to the rigorous academic focus of the program, participants also will be exposed to LSAT overview workshops and a simulated exam, law school admissions sessions, visits to local state and federal courts and law offices, and guest lectures by prominent attorneys in a variety of practice areas.

The College of Law provides free room and board, course materials, and a travel stipend to all participants. There is no program tuition, but participants are responsible for their travel expenses to and from Tallahassee.

To apply, students must complete the online application and submit a resume, one letter of recommendation, a personal statement, and a current transcript. The SISE Program

The Summer Institute on Sustainability and Energy (SISE) is a two-week intensive workshop and lecture series for students and professionals. From August 4-16, a diverse body of participants will engage a broad spectrum of energy and sustainability-related topics through daily presentations, collaborative projects, mentoring activities, site visits, and networking opportunities with leading research institutions and companies in the digital technology and energy sectors. The issues presented will be of interest to scientists, economists, political scientists, urban planners, engineers, architects, and entrepreneurs. Graduates leave as thoughtful and informed global citizens with a firm foundation and expanded network for careers in sustainability, energy, and smart technology and infrastructure.

2016 Theme: Nexus

Water and energy have long been thought of--and addressed as--two separate issues. With the advent of systems thinking, life cycle assessment, and similar strategies for interdisciplinary analysis, the connection between water and energy has only recently been fully acknowledged. This nexus will be challenged in the coming decades as a result of 1) a growing world population, 2) the need to cultivate more food, 3) a dwindling supply of available water resources, and 4) unforeseen disasters as result of climate change. It is important for energy and sustainability-minded professionals, and all future decision makers, to become fluent in the issues surrounding the nexus, and to work together to implement innovative solutions in the decades to come.

SISE will 1) explore the relationship between energy and water with an eye towards environmental and agricultural impacts; 2) explore the the use of water, especially in energy extraction (fracking) and generation; and 3) highlight the role of the grid in energy issues, emphasizing three specific areas: smart grid, storage for the grid, and the distribution of energy. Participants will consider where the United States is to date, potential solutions, and obstacles and opportunities for each path moving forward.

Now Accepting Applications

Admission into the program is highly competitive, drawing from a national pool of applicants. Participants can expect lodging for the duration of the 2-week program. Many participants will receive partial support for travel costs.

Senior-level undergraduates (as of the fall of 2016), graduate students, and professionals working in the fields of sustainability and energy who are living, working, or studying in the United States are eligible to apply. Summer 2017 Diversity Fellowship for 4-week study in London

Brainchild's primary prerequisite for submissions is quality, and our standards are the calling card of our magazine. We represent the Mid-East Honors Association, which means that we only publish honors students in the mid-east region of the country—from Illinois to Pennsylvania and from Michigan down to Virginia. This area comprises over 200 honors colleges and programs whose students we can only accept submissions from. And though our submission base is small, our readership is diverse and growing, and this has helped build Brainchild into the premier undergraduate-only literary and arts magazine in the country. This means that any individual submitting to us will have a higher chance of publication in our magazine than in almost any other, and they have the chance to be read by a highly intelligent readership that is committed to the arts. This year the Chicago International Movies and Music Festival (CIMMfest) is continuing with its 2nd annual industry conference, CIMMcon, a series of music music and film based panels, workshops, and presentations.

This year for CIMMcon we are proud to introduce a new event called Filmlympics a student film festival to showcase students’ work and cultivate the Chicago student filmmaking community. Monetary Assistance Program grants the state's largest aid program for low-income students aren't getting paid and many schools can no longer afford to cover for the MAP grant shortfall. Over 100,000 students face uncertainty about their future. Meanwhile, every state school faces difficulty with everything from retaining faculty to rendering student services without direct state funding - for the U of I, that's over $600 million this year alone.

If the Brachiosaurus outside the Field Museum could talk, what story would it tell? Maybe YOUR story!

The Goodman has partnered with Statue Stories Chicago to create a writing competition where Chicago area residents can write and submit a monologue for one of three of the city’s pieces of public art. To help people prepare, we will host a series of FREE one-hour writing workshops around Chicago with some of the city’s most exciting playwrights. Ike Holter (Exit Strategy) and Mickle Maher (Song About Himself) will share insights and experiences while helping participants sharpen their writing skills.

Workshops will be held on the following dates, from 11AM-Noon. Reservations are not required, but recommended.

MONOLOGUE WRITING COMPETITION

From now until the end of September, Chicagoland residents of all ages and experience levels can compete to give a voice to one of the three following statues:

Brachiosaurus >> (outside of the Field Museum)Bronze Cow >> (outside of the Chicago Cultural Center)Lake Ontario >> (part of the Spirit of the Great Lakes, South Garden of the Art Institute of Chicago)

Monologues must be 350 words or less and written in first-person, as though the statue were speaking directly to the viewer. The winning selections will be voiced and recorded by professional actors cast by the Goodman. Winning authors may attend the recording session, and shall receive their own personal copy of the recording. Recordings of the winning monologues will be included in Statue Stories Chicago and accessible by the public from March 2016-August 2016.

The UIC Office of Sustainability is currently looking for students (undergrad and grad) and anyone from the campus community with sensory or mobility disabilities to participate in a focus group on pedestrian and bicycle circulation at UIC. The study will gather feedback on your experiences and suggestions for improvements. It is being conducted by a consultant in cooperation with the Office of Sustainability and Facilities Management.

The focus group will be one hour long on Sept. 16. As a thank you, each participant will receive a $25 gift certificate from the UIC bookstore.

Who: Current UIC undergraduate and graduate students are invited to participate as individuals or teams.

What: Design an original project that answers such questions as: Why is studying the humanities (literature, foreign languages and cultures, history, philosophy, art history) important to you? To society? How would you convince your parents, an employer, a politician, or others that there is value in learning the humanities?

How: Express why you consider the humanities to be valuable using any medium. Make a video, website, or other digital project; make a photo collage, comic strip, cartoon, infographic, or other visual art project; conduct an interview; write a song, short story, or essay. All submissions must be made online and in an electronic format.

Why: Because we need your help advocating for the humanities in higher education! And because there will be cash prizes for first, second, and third place winners. A panel of distinguished UIC faculty members will judge your submission based on the clarity, quality, and impact of your message.

The UIC WISE program has been asked to recruit science fair judges for the Upper Grade (6-8) Science Fair at Mark T. Skinner Fine Art & Technology School. They are looking for judges to evaluate the projects. If you or someone you know is able to come and help out, it will be appreciated.

Judges just need to have a willingness to help a young person make their science project better. UIC students, staff and faculty are all welcome to volunteer. There is a good number of volunteers already, but still a few more people are needed to help out. The science teacher will have an easy scoring rubric to follow.

The Science Fair judging will take place on Monday, December 14th from 9:45 to 12:45 in the gym.

In conjunction with its Prop-Up Prop campaign, Prop Thtr is proud to announce the first event of its new bi-annual original film competition series, March Missed Connections: A 48-Hour Film Festival (MMCFF).

Open to all ages and levels of skill, registration for Prop’s MMCFF begins today and will remain open through 11:59 PM CT March 9th. For a meager entry fee of $20 and simple registration, at the newly redesigned Prop Thtr website (http://www.propthtr.org/film-festival.html), anyone, individual or group, may secure themselves a seat in the competition and screening!

The catch? Contestants’ films will be required to both draw their inspiration from a Missed Connection posting taken from a local source as well as feature a previously selected prop. Both the inspiration and prop assignments will be sent to registered teams, by e-mail, the evening of Friday, March 11th. As if things weren’t interesting enough; from the moment teams receive their assignment, the clock will be ticking! All films will be due, uploaded to YouTube, two days later moments before the stroke of midnight: 11:59 PM CT on Sunday, March 13th

Then what happens? ... A lot!

Each film will be screened by a panel of judges and critiqued against a standard criterion. 2 weeks later, on Friday March 25th & Saturday March 26th at 7 PM CT, Prop Thtr will roll out the red carpet for filmmakers, friends and family alike at the MMCFF screening festival during which all films will be premiered. Hosted at Prop’s home, 3502 N. Elston Ave., the MMCFF will offer filmmakers the chance to see their name in lights, have their filmed screened in 60+ seat houses two nights in a row, and a unique opportunity to network with other theatre and film artists in attendance as we work to break down the barriers between realms.

To mark the occasion the second, Saturday March 26th will with an awards ceremony honoring our filmmakers with awards for Best Picture, Director, Actor and many more as voted upon by our illustrious panel of judges. Those who are fortunate enough to walk away winners the evening of Saturday, March ,will not only retain the bragging rights tied to their awards but will also receive surprises from new 26th neighborhood favorites and longtime staples.

After the festival ends, all films will remain posted to the Prop Thtr YouTube channel for unlimited viewing by Prop audience members around the world. Additionally, the top films and their creators will also be honored with a dedicated profile and film page on the Prop Thtr website. In an effort to foster growth and as a courtesy to all our filmmakers, each team will receive formal feedback following the festival from judges offering their unique insight and interpretations.

Programming Languages Mentoring Workshop 2016What is PLMW

The Programming Languages Mentoring Workshop (PLMW) aims to encourage graduate students and senior undergraduate students to pursue careers in programming language research. The workshop brings together world leaders in programming languages research and teaching from academia and industry to provide (a) technical sessions on cutting edge PL research and (b) mentoring sessions on how to prepare for a research career. The workshop aims to engage students in a process of imagining how they might contribute to our research community. We especially encourage women and under-represented minority students to attend PLMW.

After the resounding success of the first four Programming Languages Mentoring Workshops at POPL 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015, we announce the 5th SIGPLAN Programming Languages Mentoring Workshop, co-located with POPL 2016. POPL is the ACM’s flagship conference for foundational aspects of programming languages, and its 43rd edition will take place in Florida, USA next year. PLMW will be held immediately before POPL 2016, on Tuesday, January 19. We hope that participants will stay through the entire conference.

Scholarship applications

PLMW sponsors have generously donated scholarship funds for qualified students to attend PLMW. These scholarships should cover reasonable expenses (airfare, hotel, and registration fees) for attendance at both the workshop and the POPL conference. Students attending this year will get one year free student membership of SIGPLAN, unless they prefer to opt out during their application. The workshop registration is open to all. Students with alternative sources of funding are welcome as well.

Illinois Institute of Technology, IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law is sponsoring a Prelaw Undergraduate Scholars (PLUS) Program from June 1 through June 20, 2014. The deadline to submit the application is Monday, March 3, 2014.

The PLUS program is a unique and rigorous three-week experience for current college freshmen, sophomores or juniors interested in the legal profession. Our goal is to provide students with a “taste” of the law school experience and introduce them to the admissions process. Students will attend classes taught by IIT Chicago-Kent law professors, recognized as some of the most productive and accomplished law professors in the nation.

The program is designed to attract disadvantaged students and those from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups. The program will cover the cost of tuition, room in a residence hall, required course materials and other expenses. Participants are paid a stipend to offset some of their meal and other expenses. The program does not pay for any transportation expenses.

Since 2012, POV Hackathon has provided matchmaking and mentorship for visionary filmmakers and inventive technologists to "re-imagine the documentary for web" in a single weekend.

POV Hackathon 9 will take place in Chicago the weekend of August 15-16, 2015, in partnership with Kartemquin Films, a collaborative center for documentary media makers who seek to foster a more engaged and empowered society, and The Chicago Innovation Exchange, the University of Chicago's new center to help scholars and entrepreneurs translate their ideas and new technologies into start-up businesses and products.

Expect to be busy from the Saturday morning through Sunday evening. Hacking concludes on Sunday afternoon, but there will be a screening on Sunday evening, followed by a reception. All events take place at The Chicago Innovation Exchange, 1452 E 53rd Street Chicago, IL 60615.

We are currently recruiting a student in the School of Art and Design with experience in video editing to work on a project creating video testominals addressing barriers to pre-exposure prophylaxis for HIV (PrEP). Our team currently consists of three UIC medical students, one Medical School faculty member, and the staff at Project Vida, an HIV/AIDS education and direct services organization in Little Village. The Disability Resource Center is looking for an interested and committed Honors Student to work with a student who is blind in his Fall 2015 ECON 121: Principles of Macroeconomics course. The Honors Student would serve as the DRC student’s note taker and scribe throughout the fall semester. A scribe assists with the visual and writing aspects of homework, in-class activities, and exams. The DRC student will be responsible for training the scribe and informing what tasks are needed such as describing graphs, or writing down specific answers.

The responsibilities for this activity are as follows:

- Attend all classes as the student’s note taker and scribe for any in-class work that needs completion.

o Class meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30-10:45 and Wednesdays from 1:00-1:50

- Meet with the student a couple of hours/week outside of class to help explain any notes and/or scribe homework assignments

- Scribe course exams with student throughout semester (2 midterms at 2.5 hours each and 1 final exam at 4 hours)

The requirements for this activity are as follows:

- Eligibility in the Honors College and approval of this activity by your Faculty Fellow

- Familiarity with Macroeconomics – prefer someone who has taken ECON 121 before, especially with Professor William Rauscher

o If you haven’t taken ECON 121 but will be in the future (including Fall 2015), you are not eligible for this activity.
