  • Cutie's (the Honors College Cat) Office Hours with Dean Chang, Thurs. 9/24

    As the Faculty in Residence in James Stukel Towers, Dean Chang and her cats Cutie and Yuki host office hours every Thursday between 8-9pm in Dean Chang's apartment in JST C226 (turn left just before you reach the C-tower elevator).

Both have just graduated from UIC--John is now attending the College of Dentistry and Marilyn is at the College of Pharmacy. If you want to know more about how to get into health-sciences schools, or are just curious about the feeling of being an alumni, please come join us!

    To add to the excitement, Morgan, a freshman jazz musician who has performed at local bars, will play guitar and sing for us!!

    What are the real issues behind the Flint, Michigan Water Crisis? Wednesday, March 16th from 5:00pm to 6:00pm in 114BH, find out more about the scientific and discriminatory complications that the people of Flint had to suffer through.     Emilia DiMenco, President and CEO, Women’s Business Development Center
    Retired Executive Vice President, BMO Harris Bank, N.A.

    Tuesday, February 25, 9:30 am in 121 Burnham Hall

    Emilia DiMenco is the Chief Operating Officer of the Women’s Business Development Center, which she began after completing a 32-year career as an executive vice president with Harris Bank’s Corporate and Commercial Banking team.  Currently, she is responsible for all aspects of nonprofit leadership, including program management, fundraising, succession planning, and strategic planning. Among her accomplishments, she has launched two microloan programs with a pool of nearly $1 million in loans.  Emilia is well-known for her contributions to leading civic and professional organizations, including the YWCA of Metropolitan Chicago.

    Jason C. Ervin has served as Alderman of Chicago’s 28th Ward since 2011, which includes Austin, East Garfield, West Gar­field, North Lawndale, Little Italy, Little Village, Pilsen, Tri-Taylor, University Village, and the West Loop. Alderman Ervin is a Certi­fied Public Accountant and the former Village Manager for Maywood, Illinois. As an undergraduate student at SIU Carbondale, he was elected as the Student Representative for the SIU Board of Trustees.

    Julieanna Richardson, Founder & Executive Director of The HistoryMakers 

    Thursday, February 6, 9:30 am in 121 Burnham Hall

    Julieanna Richardson is the Founder and the Executive Director of The HistoryMakers, the nation’s largest African American video oral history collection.  By recording, preserving and sharing the life stories of thousands of African Americans, from President Barack Obama to the oldest living black cowboy, The HistoryMakers is a leader in helping to educate and enlighten millions worldwide through refashioning a more inclusive record of American history.  Ms. Richardson has a diverse background in corporate law, television production and cable television.  She is also the recipient of the UIC Great Cities Institute's first Vernon Jarrett Senior Fellowship in 2006.

    Charles Ashby (Chuck) Lewis is chairman of the Lewis-Sebring Family Foundation and Managing General Partner of Coach House Capital, his family office. He is a retired Vice Chairman, Investment Banking, of Merrill Lynch & Co.

    Mr. Lewis is a Trustee of the University of Chicago. He is involved with the UChicago Urban Education Institute and is a member of the Board of Directors of its UChicago Impact LLC unit and of the Governing Board of its UChicago Charter School unit. He is also a member and a life member of the Visiting Committees to the Division of the Social Sciences and to the College at the University, respectively.

    He is a Life Trustee of Amherst and of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, a Life Director of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Illinois Chapter, and a Trustee of the Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago.

    Mr. Lewis was a member of the National Finance Committee for both Obama presidential campaigns and writes occasional commentaries called “Obamagrams.”

    Mr. Lewis was educated at Amherst College and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He also received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Amherst.

  • Special Collections Tour: Rare Artifacts of the Atlantic Slave Trade, Tues. 4/21

    Interested in seeing some of the historic sources behind the current-day events in Ferguson and Staten Island?  Come to Special Collections on the third floor of the Daley Library at 5 on Tuesday, April 21, and see rare documents that help us to learn about the reality of the 18th and 19th century Atlantic Slave Trade. With a guided tour and open discussion with Professor Nancy Cirillo.

    This event can fulfill a requirement for HON 101 Students (UIC Experience – Inquiring Minds Category) or for PAP-H first-year (Category 3) or third-year checklists (Cultural Engagement category.

  • December 2016 Graduates: Complete HC Graduation Declaration Form, Apply to be Student Speaker

    REMINDER:  Please complete the Honors College Graduation Declaration and Convocation Reservation if you have not already!  This form is required whether or not you plan to attend the Honors College Convocation.

    The Honors College Convocation will take place on Wednesday, December 7, (during final exam week) at 7:00 p.m. in the Illinois Room of Student Center East.  We are excited to welcome the Dr. Mrinalini “Meena” Rao, Professor of Physiology and Biophysics, as our keynote speaker.

    Please let us know whether or not you will attend the Convocation by completing and submitting the Graduation Declaration to the Honors College as soon as possible.  The form is available on our website at https://www.honors.uic.edu/convocation.  On the form, you’re asked for information about your accomplishments and future plans – don’t be shy! Give us as much detailed information as possible.  This gives us the opportunity to recognize these accomplishments during the convocation ceremony and to “brag” to the rest of the world about our outstanding Honors College students. 

    In addition, you may want to consider the following opportunity:

    If you would like to be considered for our Graduating Student Speaker, please submit a draft of what you would say in your address to Stephanie O’Leary by Friday, November 11.  You should plan on speaking for 3-5 minutes.  You may submit your draft by email to soleary@uic.edu or on paper; just drop it off at the reception desk in Burnham Hall if you choose the latter.

    All first-year students will be assigned a Faculty Fellow by the summer after your freshman year.  Come to this interactive workshop to learn more about the role of a Faculty Fellow, tips for communicating and building a relationship with your Fellow, and other advice and strategies for building a strong relationship with your Fellow. This workshop is designed primarily for first-year students and students who are new to the Honors College, but any Honors College student is welcome to attend.

    Professor Barbara Simmons from the UIC College of Nursing will be visiting JST this Thursday 9/25, hosted by Faculty-In-Residence and Associate Dean Chang! This is a personal encounter--just come and chat! You don't need to be interested in Nursing. 

    Dean Chang will be having dinner with Professor Simmons at the JST cafeteria around 7pm.  Any students are welcome to join -- just pull up a chair and sit down!

    The Honors College is a proud cosponsor of the Future of Chicago lecture series, which is coordinated by the Political Science Department. This program brings current and former leaders to campus to discuss the current state and future of Chicago, and the Honors College offers students a chance to discuss with Alderman Edward Burke in a small-group lunch after his lecture on Monday 10/17.  The lecture is free and open to the public; The lunch is limited to 25 undergraduate students and RSVP is required.  Details are below.     Lecture and Lunch with 14th Ward Alderman Edward Burke, Monday 10/17, 12pm - 2pm

    Alderman Burke is the 14th Ward Alderman and represents part of the southwest side of Chicago.  He is the longest serving alderman in the city of Chicago and was named to the "100 Most Powerful Chicagoans" by Chicago Magazine.  As Chairman of the City Council Committee on Finance, Alderman Burke is responsible for all legislative matters pertaining to the city's finances, including municipal bonds, taxes and revenue matters.

    Lecture: "The Chicago City Council and the Future of Chicago", 12:00 - 12:50 pm in Lecture Center C1

    Lunch with the Alderman: 1:00 - 1:50 pm in 121 Burnham Hall.  RSVP for the lunch by noon on Thursday 10/13 at https://uofi.uic.edu/sb/sec/70030.

    All students are welcome to attend the lecture without RSVP’ing.  Lunch is limited to 25 undergraduate students and RSVP is required for lunch.  If max capacity is reached for lunch, students will be notified. Students who plan on attending the lunch are also expected to attend the lecture beforehand to be prepared to engage in discussion with the Alderman.
