    Dr. Brian Kay is currently a Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences and conducts research in Molecular Biology on generating recombinant affinity reagents. He was the Head of the Department of Biological Sciences. Come hear his valuable insights about the importance of research in medicine and his career path as a molecular biology researcher!   • Society of Future Physicians Lecture: Dr. Enrico Benedetti, Mon. 3/14

    The Society of Future Physicians will be hosting a lecture with Dr. Enrico Benedetti, Professor and Department Head of Surgery at the UIC College of Medicine.

    All students (especially those looking into a career in medicine) are welcome to see Dr. Benedetti's lecture on Monday, March 14th at 4 PM. The lecture will be located at Stevenson Hall, (SH) in room 303. The lecture will consist of Dr. Benedetti's journey through medicine, and any other information that Dr. Benedetti thinks is relevant to share. Students also will have the opportunity to ask questions.

    Some additional information: Dr. Enrico Benedetti is a Professor and Department Head of Surgery at the UIC College of Medicine, and specializes in Transplant surgeries. Dr. Benedetti has pioneered robotics in surgery, performing the first robotic donor nephrectomy for a living-donor kidney transplant, as well as performing the first robotic combined kidney and pancreas procurement for a living-donor transplant.

  • LeaderShape Institute Applications, due 3/17

    Student Leadership Development and Volunteer Services is excited to announce they are now accepting applications for the LeaderShape Institute. The Institute, provided by LeaderShape, is a six-day, five-night leadership retreat teaching visioning, relationship-building, and the importance of leading with integrity. The Institute will take place May 7 to May 12, 2016 at an off campus retreat center. The only requirement for attendance is you must be returning to UIC in the Fall Semester. Applications are due March 17, 2016.

    Dr. Niederberger, MD is the Clarence C. Saelhof Professor and Head of the Department of Urology at UIC. He holds a joint appointment as Professor in the Department of Bioengineering in the College of Engineering.   • Honors College Ambassadors-Now Accepting Applications

    Honors College Ambassadors Accepting Applications for 2016-17, Apply by Thurs. 3/31

    The Honors College is now accepting applications for Honors Ambassadors for the 2016-17 year.

    WHO ARE HONORS AMBASSADORS?

    Honors Ambassadors are Honors College students who have decided to take that extra step in becoming part of the Honors College team by recruiting and welcoming first-year students into UIC and the Honors College. Working through the Honors College from May 2016 through Spring 2017, Honors Ambassadors are instrumental in welcoming new Honors College students to UIC and assisting in their engagement to campus resources and the Honors College Community.

    WHAT DO HONORS AMBASSADORS DO?

    Each Honors Ambassador will serve as a mentor to approximately 10 incoming freshman. Ambassadors will be assigned their mentees based on the Freshman Orientation program date they are assigned and expected to attend to meet their mentees. Throughout the summer, the Ambassador is expected to stay in touch with their mentees. Ambassadors are required to attend the Freshman Retreat onFriday August 19th to reconnect with their mentees. For the Fall semester, Ambassadors will be assigned one of the four tasks: blog for the Ampersand Newsletter about their experience in the Honors College, serve as a PAPH Ambassador (be of service during PAPH week), serve as an HON 101 Teaching Assistant, or serve as an Activities Coordinator for HAMBS-Sponsored events. The term of service continues into the Spring in further support of Honors College Admissions activities.

    Honors Ambassadors must be in good standing with the Honors College by the end of the Spring 2016 semester. Applications can be submitted online (https://uofi.uic.edu/sb/sec/772161) and the application deadline is March 31.   • Publications Release Party, Wed. 4/13

    Join us in celebrating the release of the latest edition of each of the Honors College student-run publications at the annual Publication Release Party!  

    The Publication Release Party will be held on Wednesday, April 13 from 4 – 5:30 pm in the Honors College Student Lounge (Room 109 Burnham Hall).  The newest edition of each of the Honors College publications will be available, including:

    The Ampersand, the official student-run Honors College newsletter

    The Asterisk, a political satire newsletter

    The Journal for Pre-Health Affiliated Students, a journal focused on topics related to the health professions

    Red Shoes Review, a literary and arts magazine

    UIC OneWorld, a social justice and global affairs magazine

    The Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research Journal, an online open-access undergraduate research journal

  • Apply to join the 2016-17 Honors College Advisory Board, Due Fri. 4/15

    Elections for the 2016-2017 academic year are now underway to select new members of the Honors College Advisory Board!

    HCAB serves as a body of student representation advisory to the Dean of the College and its faculty and staff. The organization also helps develop and organize various social and programming initiatives for the Honors College. So, come represent your fellow Honors College students, help build community among between your peers and faculty, and be a part of planning some of the College’s major events, such as the Annual Honors College Ball!

    If you are interested in joining HCAB, please submit your application to the Honors College no later than 5:00 p.m. on Friday, April 15th. To note, hard copies of the application can also be found at the College.

  • SFP Lecture: Institute for Tuberculosis Researcher, 4/20

    The Society of Future Physicians will be hosting a lecture with Dr. Nina Wolf and Dr. Edyta Grzelak from the Institute for Tuberculosis Research at UIC. The Institute for Tuberculosis Research is a drug discovery research facility located at the UIC College of Pharmacy, with researchers from around the globe focusing on the growing tuberculosis concern. They will be giving a talk about their research experiences will be eager to take any questions about being in a PhD program.

  • Applied Health Sciences Student Org Kickoff Event, Wed. 8/31

    The Pre-Occupational Therapy Club, Kinesiology Club, Pre-Physical Therapy Club, and Applied Health Sciences (AHS) Student Council clubs are sponsoring a kick-off event in the Student Recreation Facility MAC gym from 4:30-7PM on Wednesday, August 31st.

    This social event is open for anyone interested in joining these clubs or any students pursuing an AHS-related career.

    We will be playing sports games such as basketball, volleyball, and bags. This is the perfect way to start the school year and socialize with peers who are pursuing AHS-related degrees.

    Of course, there will be FREE food! We will be catering from Portillo's!

  • First Project ESTEEM Meeting, Wed. Sept. 7

We visit kids in foster care shelters bi-weekly and teach them science via hands-on experiments. For more information, come to our first meeting on Wednesday, 9/7 at 5:00 pm.   • Applications are open for Nu Rho Psi: The Neuroscience Honors Society

    Hello Neuroscience Students!

    My name is Masun Jackson and I am the UIC chapter president for Nu Rho Psi. We are a nationally recognized neuroscience honors society focused on the goals of academic excellence and spreading the discipline of neuroscience throughout the community. At the start of each semester we look for new members who share these goals and actively want to engage in the endeavors of neuroscience. We host and sponsor several neuroscience events each semester as well as collaborate with faculty, national members, and members of neuroscience curriculums across the country.

    If you are interested in joining there are just a few requirements that you must meet. You must be declared as a major or minor in neuroscience, have completion of at least 3 semesters of College coursework, completion of at least 9 semester hours of neuroscience related courses, and have an undergraduate cumulative GPA of 3.2 and 3.4 in neuroscience related courses.

  • Join Project ESTEEM! Come to our Orientation Meeting.

    Do you enjoy working with kids? Have a passion for science? Then Project ESTEEM is right for you! Project ESTEEM reaches out to children currently in the children's shelter, Lydia's Home and The Rice Child and Family Center, and teaches them science through exciting experiments and projects! Volunteers from all undergraduate colleges are welcome to join; you do not necessarily have to major in science and/or education in order to be a member of Project ESTEEM, nor do you have to be a member of the Honors College. However, Honors College students do have the ability to use Project ESTEEM as an Honors College Activity.

    Come join HCAB for a fun night of crafts and volunteering! On November 2nd from 5-7 pm in the Honors College lounge, relax, mingle, and help make cards for Veterans!     The Society of Physicians is honored to host a lecture with Dr.Saul! Dr. Saul is an esteemed doctor and professor at UIC. Not only is he a practicing pediatrician, he has also served as the curricular director of the College of Medicine, and is currently the vice provost for planning and programs for UIC! Future med students, this is one lecture you cannot miss! He will be discussing his research, but pay close attention to hear his advice on other areas as well! He has a primary research interest in exploring and identifying ways to improve how physicians individualize treatment decisions. He has developed the concept of "contextual errors" to describe medical errors that result from failures to identify or take into account factors in patients' lives and circumstances that are relevant to their care. He works with actors who present in physician practices as incognito standardized patients to collect comparative data on physician decision making under various conditions. He is developing and evaluating educational interventions to train health care providers to integrate patient context with research evidence when planning patient care.

  • HCAB presents Fundamentals Of Undergraduate Research 11/9

    To all students looking to acquire more information regarding Undergraduate Research, Dr. Sara Hall, the Director of the Office of Undergraduate Research will be sharing about the "Fundamentals of Undergraduate Research" in her presentation that will include the following topics: The Research University and You, Finding a Research Mentor, Finding Funding for your Undergraduate Research, Where, When, and Whether to Present and Publish, and finally Contextualizing the Capstone.     Do final exams stress you out? Join your Honors College Advisory Board for a relaxing evening. The wellness center will be providing a “stretching out your stress” workshop where attendees can learn about stress and how to manage it with breathing and stretching exercises. DIY aromatherapy oil roll-ons and DIY study snacks will follow the presentation. The event will be held in the Honors College Lounge Burnham Hall on November 30 from 5-7pm.   • HCAB Scholarship Applications, Due Fri. 2/3

    The Honors College Advisory Board will award a $1,000 scholarship to a current Honors College students. Eligible students must be in good standing with the college (3.4 GPA), enrolled full-time, and be significantly involved in Honors College activities and student organizations. This scholarship will be awarded during the Ball on Sat. 3/11; therefore, you must also be able to attend this event to be eligible to apply. For more information, see the attached application (hard copies can be found at the Honors College as well.) Please note the deadline to submit your application is February 3rd at 5:00 p.m. at the Honors College front desk.
