  WHAT IS THE CLS?

  CLS offers a fully-funded overseas language and cultural immersion program for American undergraduate, professional and graduate students. “With the goal of broadening the base of Americans studying and mastering critical languages and building relationships between the people of the United States and other countries, CLS provides opportunities to a diverse range of students from across the United States at every level of language learning.”

The CLS Program seeks participants with diverse interests, and from a wide range of fields of study and career paths, with the purpose of representing the full diversity of the United States.   PROGRAM BENEFITS

  “The CLS Program is fully funded from start to finish. From the time you step foot out the door to the time you arrive home, the CLS Program covers many of the costs of participating in its  overseas institutes, including:-Intensive overseas group based language courses (20+ hours per week)-Room and board, often with a host family-A full cultural program-Host community language partners-Domestic and international airfare

  Participants receive a small stipend to cover incidental expenses and meals not provided by the program. Upon completion of the program, participants also receive a certified American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) score.”

  The CLS program offers a year’s worth of graded credit that you can apply to your college career.

  PROGRAM STRUCTURE

  “CLS Program institutes cover approximately one academic year of university-level language coursework during an eight- to ten-week program and are designed to meet the needs of students from a variety of language levels and backgrounds. Formal classroom language instruction is provided for a minimum of 20 hours per week. Extracurricular activities are designed to supplement the formal curriculum, including regular one-on-one meetings with native speaker language partners for conversational practice, as well as cultural activities and excursions designed to expand students’ understanding of the history, politics, culture and daily life of their host country.”

  The Department of Psychology at the University of California is conducting an important longitudinal project with adults located in the Chicago area. We seek to hire students on a limited part-time basis (approximately 5 hours a month) to locate participants and/or conduct in-person interviews.  Delivering and sending questionnaires and project materials to participants and close communication with us will also be needed.

  The students must be friendly, highly responsible, and persistent; have a car; be willing to go to participants’ residences throughout Chicago and the suburbs; and have flexible schedules. Maintaining confidentiality of participant information is essential. Experience and/or classwork in clinical psychology, social work, urban studies, race relations, poverty, or the like would be helpful.

  The Guild Literary Complex [Guild] is seeking a creative and collaborative Project Coordinator [Coordinator] to organize and implement Brooksday. Brooksday was created in 2013 to honor and sustain the work of Gwendolyn Brooks. Brooks is one of the most important of American poets—an artist who broke through racial barriers in our literature and publishing, who nurtured many younger writers, and who with poetic virtuosity and courage changed American poetry. Brooksday is held annually on June 7, the date of Mrs. Brooks’ birth, and includes readings of her poetry by invited guests, along with music and special performances.

  This is a paid part-time position that begins approximately mid-February and continues through mid-June (approximately four months).

  Individual Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the volunteer Brooksday Planning Committee [Committee] to develop and implement the entire day of activities.
  • Manage and track program logistics, including but not limited to keeping an updated list of tasks, deadlines, and person(s) responsible for completing each task, organizing a complete schedule for the day, and coordinating event volunteers.
  • Correspond with readers, including sending invitations, collecting responses and required information (bios, photos, etc), and maintaining an accurate contact list.
  • Organize the detailed reading schedule.
  • Manage new and existing relationships with Brooksday partners, as required.
  • Maintain regular communication with Committee and Director of the Guild, and attend all Committee meetings.
  • Contribute to basic event marketing and maintain event social media presence.
  • Provide a post event report and follow-up with partners and readers, as necessary.

  Qualifications

  • Experience presenting live, public events.
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills.
  • Ability to work independently, and with others in a collaborative setting.
  • Strong communication skills (written and oral), and a professional demeanor.
  • Resourceful, inventive, and positive.
  • Computer skills for word processing, data entry, spreadsheet management, and social media.
  • Interest or experience in literary arts preferred but not required.

  Hours and Pay

  The position pays $15/hour for up to 265 hours. The weekly time commitment for the position varies and is based on the following estimated schedule:

  45 hours            June

   

  These hours are not guaranteed. Pay will be determined based on actual hours worked. Hours will be submitted with detail to the Director of the Guild every two weeks.

  The Project Coordinator will be present for the entire Brooksday event, included set-up and break down. Brooksday 2015 is scheduled for June 7, 12-6pm.

These students invest their time and talent into CCWF research, programs, projects, communications, fundraising, and social media. Various backgrounds include law, social work, psychology, communications, and business among other professional discplines. These vibrant students significantly contribute to the cause of child rights protection while learning about the international field at both the global and domestic levels based on the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

  As the internship progresses and interns engage with CCWF internship projects, social media, and reading, they become familiar with the academic and practical pursuits of international child rights protection including the economic, political, cultural and societal contexts in which CCWF and all child rights organizations operate.   The Reproductive Rights Activist Service Corps is a paid summer internship program that places undergraduate students from around the country at reproductive rights and social justice organizations for ten-week summer internships.

  The RRASC program defines reproductive rights broadly to include movements advocating for human rights, economic justice, racial equality, queer rights, immigrants' rights, access to health services, and youth empowerment among others.  Our partner organizations span the country and work with and for various communities.  Since our program started in 1999, CLPP has placed over 350 interns at more than 100 organizations. 

  RRASC internships are substantive with interns participating in organizing, advocacy, direct service, community health, education, research, public policy and more.  All interns receive a $3,300 stipend and complete an intensive internship training at the annual CLPP conference.

  Fund for Education Abroad.  This is for non-traditional locations for study abroad in programs that are both immersive and rigorous.  This fits this program (although Paris is traditional) because it is immersive, rigorous and non-traditional in that students are interning within the social services.  Emphasize that an internship in the social services is a unique and non-traditional destination for studies in France.  It is important to note that this scholarship only supports academically rigorous and immersive study abroad programs.
