On November 12th, 2019, UIC's African American Academic Network (AAAN) hosted a Roundtable Discussion. The AAAN is a program on campus to promote success and high impact engagement for students of African descent through advising, student advocacy, and structured leraning opportunities. Attendees included students from Nursing, Dentistry, Pharmacy, and Medicine. A panel of alumni health professionals from UIC health science colleges and undergradaute programs provided insight on their careers and unique expeirences that led them throughout their professional journeys.
Our very own College of Nursing 2019 Alumna, Efua Owusu, BSN, RN was able to share of her experiences as a black nursing student, and now Registered Nurse in the Bronzeville community. Efua began her nursing career in CPS Gwendolyn Brooks College Prep on the city South Side, where she graudated with a diploma and as a Licensed Pracitcal Nurse. Her future goals include becoming an emergency room nurse, and starting a mentoring program for young students who are looking to persue careers in healthcare.
