“How would you feel when you migrate to a new country without relatives and being a stranger to the roads, people, cuisine, and transportation systems? That was my reality when I relocated to the United States in 2023 to pursue a PhD in nursing from Ghana, a country in West Africa.”
Life as an international student can be overwhelming, burdened with challenges and uncertainties. Nevertheless, it also offers a wealth of prospects for growth and development.
To begin with, culture shock is one of the most frequent challenges international students face. UIC is among the most diverse universities in the United States. It is not uncommon for an individual to meet students whose way of life, norms, and values completely differ from their own. This radical change renders the international student disoriented, and extremely anxious. However, this highlights a great opportunity for them to acquaint themselves with people from different backgrounds and learn more about their culture. This glaring gap can be overcome by devoting considerable energy and time and exhibiting extreme willingness to adapt and cope.
Similarly, the language barrier cannot be underestimated. International students struggle with understanding intricate concepts and lectures as well as interacting with other students and faculty members. They predominantly struggle with pronunciation, comprehension, writing essays and reports, following fast-paced lectures, and actively engaging in class discussions. This can serve as a huge impediment to academic success and social integration. It is plausible international students get enrolled in the communication courses offered by the school. Additionally, they should regularly participate in discussion groups and practice English speaking with native students to increase their confidence and proficiency.
Acclimatizing to the academic rigors of a foreign educational system could pose serious problems for international students. They are more likely to experience considerable variations in the teaching methods, practices, and curricula, which affects their ability to thrive in their new academic environment. The UIC academic resource center can contribute greatly to their adjustment and success. Additionally, comprehensive orientation programs should be organized to help them familiarize themselves with the academic workloads, pressures, academic culture, and expectations.
Furthermore, securing an accommodation as an international student can sometimes be an insurmountable difficulty. With no prior connections in the foreign country (USA), unfamiliarity with the leasing process, and experiencing financial constraints, all efforts could prove futile. Students should contact the graduate coordinator to assist them with valuable information and guidance. Moreover, connecting with continuing students on social media platforms and LinkedIn can be a great support. International students can also benefit from pre-arrival participation in online forums and student clubs to obtain helpful information and build preliminary connections. This can also facilitate a smooth transition into their new living environment.
Social isolation is ubiquitous among international students, particularly when their native country's support system is nonexistent. It might be challenging to settle in, make important connections, and feel a comforting sense of belonging. These students become solitary and struggle with mental health and wellness. These grueling ordeals they go through may forever etch into their minds and continue to resonate in soreness and trepidation. International students should engage in various academic activities and belong to student organizations to address this pressing need. Moreover, academic advisors and the UIC counseling service are another great resource where students can receive serious and excellent counsel, especially during turbulent times.
In conclusion, challenges are an inevitable part of the international student experience. However, there are resources and support systems available that these students should take advantage of to overcome these hurdles.
