According to the National Science Foundation (2016), women remain underrepresented in the science and engineering workforce, although to a lesser degree than in the past, with the greatest disparities occurring in engineering, computer science, and the physical sciences. This conference allows young women to explore and take an interest in STEM careers. Throughout the conference, participants received STEM exposure through hands-on activities in laboratory settings; education about majors, colleges, and careers; mentoring opportunities with college students, professors, and professional women; and critical thinking and discussion exercises. The conference highlighted academic and career fairs, discussion on current STEM issues, panel discussions, and motivational speakers. The College of Nursing Urban Health Program held lab demonstrations with student volunteers from the Bachelor's, Graduate Entry Master's, and Doctorate of Nursing Programs. Nurse volunteers performed a variety of hands on skills in the newly renovated lab. These skills included heart and lung assessment, input and output management, eyes and ears assessment, and wound care. This opportunity allowed participants to gain insight on nursing skills.
