On April 21, 2019, 50 high school students took part in the UHP TRIO Local STEM Conference. This conference is an opportunity for local high school students to gain confidence as they navigate through their college journey.
The TRIO upward bound program is an oppportunity for students to be exposed to higher education and college entrance preperation. More specifically, Upward Bound serves high school students with parents who do not hold a bachelor's degree and are from low-income families.
The day-long event began with an amputation demonstration by the International Museum of Surgical Sciences before the grand rounds began. During the grand rounds, students experienced Illinois Heart Rescue (CPR), suturing through the College of Medicine, and Simulation Lab at the College of Nursing. The UIC College of Nursing Urban Helath Program provided lab demonstrations with student volunteers from the Graduate Entry Master's, Bachelor's, and Doctorate of Nursing programs. Nurse volunteers performed a variety of hands on skills in the newly renovated lab. These skills included heart and lung assessment, input and output management, eyes and ears assessment, and wound care. The high school students also had the opportunity to network with the health professions student panel and answer any lingering questions they had. A current Bachelor's of Science in Nursing student, Miguel Colon, participated as a resource and inspiration for students ranging from grades 7-12. The UIC UHP CON hopes to have educated and inspired the students whom are interested in the healthcare field.
