The students had the opportunity to learn about the different healthcare programs offered at UIC from faculty and nursing students. The visit began with Charese Jackson introducing six CON students who shared their experiences and reasons as to why they chose a career in nursing. This was followed by clinical skills in the CONs newly renovated lab. Students were able to participate in lab demonstrations on basic nursing skills such as, heart and lung sounds, wound care, eye and ear exam, CPR, and health assessment. Many of the students actively participated during the lab demonstrations and verbalized their desire to pursue a career in nursing and healthcare in the future. Following the skill lab demonstrations, the Westinghouse College Prep students participated in a panel discussion with UIC faculty members. The faculty consisted of Ms. Braulia Espinosa, Administration, College of Dentistry; Mr. Garie Pierre-Louis, UIC College of Medicine Urban Health Program; Ms. Herlinda Pineda, Associate Director UIC School of Public Health; and Mr. Nicolas Zarazua, Transition coach, L@S GANAS Program. Many questions were asked and information obtained to assist the high school students for a smooth transition into college. eyes & ears station Delete Edit embedded media in the Files Tab and re-insert as needed.
