  • Coffee and Conversation in the Honors College, Thurs. 11/12

    The Honors College invites you to the first of what we expect will be a rich series of discussions of issues of concern both to the academy and the wider public. This week, the topic is "What the Candidates Are NOT Talking About," and it will be led by members of the Honors College Diversity Committee. This is intended to be a conversation among students and faculty, a free-flowing exchange of ideas in which all in attendance are welcome to participate.

    It will be this Thursday (November 12) at 4 p.m. in 114 Burnham Hall. Refreshments will be served.

  • Cutie’s Office Hours with Anatomy and Cell Bio Prof. Mary Jo Ladu, Thurs. 11/12

    As the Faculty in Residence in James Stukel Towers, Dean Chang and her cats Cutie and Yuki host office hours every Thursday between 8-9pm in Dean Chang's apartment in JST C226.

  • MEntrepreneurship: Practical Thoughts on Entrepreneurship in the Arts. With Cats! Tues., 11/17

    Are you an artist or scientist? An undergraduate or professor? A dog or cat lover? No matter how you identify, you can--and should!--consider yourself to be an entrepreneur. Being an entrepreneur is a lifestyle choice that you can make today. Let's explore what it means to be an entrepreneur, identify some strategies for those just starting out, and get you thinking outside the box... and let's do all of this with the help of cats!

  • Future of Chicago Lecture: U.S. Rep. Mike Quigley, Mon. 11/23

    The University of Illinois at Chicago political science department presents “The Role of the Federal Government in Chicago’s Future,” a talk by U.S. Rep. Mike Quigley (D-5th).

    DETAILS:

    Congressman Mike Quigley will discuss how federal investment can benefit the local economy, jobs, housing and social services — and the challenges of legislative gridlock.

    Quigley was elected to represent Illinois’ fifth district in April 2009. A former Cook County commissioner who began his career as an aide to former 44th ward alderman Bernie Hansen, Quigley has served his community in government for more than 30 years.

    Quigley is the only Illinois member of the House Committee on Appropriations, and at the start of the 114th Congress he was appointed by Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi to serve on the influential House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.

    Quigley’s talk is part of the UIC political science department’s annual “Future of Chicago” lecture series, which brings civic leaders to campus to examine issues with students and the community. Series co-sponsors are the UIC Honors College and the UIC Institute for Policy and Civic Engagement.

  • Future of Chicago Lecture Series and Lunch, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, Mon. 11/30

    The Honors College is a proud cosponsor of the Future of Chicago lecture series. This program brings current and former leaders to campus to discuss the current state and future of Chicago. Honors College students are known to be involved in and passionate about issues in the city and so we offer a chance for you to meet these speakers in a small-group lunch to be held after the lecture series. The talks occur from 12:00-12:50 in BSB 140 and the lunches will be held immediately afterward from 1-2pm. The lunches are limited to 15 students and seats are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.

    Why? It’s the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, and Chicago is celebrating the life and work of The Bard with a number of performances and adaptations of his work this year. The tale of star-crossed lovers is perfect for an operatic adaptation, and the music is stunning.

  • Come to the Annual Honors College Ball! Ticket Sales Begin Mon. 2/1

    The Annual Honors College Ball is a fun tradition for all students, staff, and faculty to attend! The theme of ball this year is Magnificent Mile of Memories. Come build memories with your fellow students and faculty/staff members! 

    The 2016 ball will take place on March 5th from 6 PM to 12 AM at the Holiday Inn Merchandise Mart.

    Tickets will be sold in Burnham Hall and online (link will be available shortly) starting February 1st. Tickets will be sold from 11am-1pm Monday through Friday in the lounge. Tickets for students are $50 and for faculty/staff are $90! We hope to see you there!

  • Honors College Ball Tickets On Sale Now!

    Tickets for the Honors College Ball are on sale now thru February 19th. Tickets sell fast, so get yours early!

    Tickets will be sold in the Honors College Student Lounge (109 Burnham Hall) from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., Monday - Friday. Remember, this event is open to all UIC students, faculty, and staff. Guests do not have to be affiliated with UIC; however, a UIC member must sponsor the purchase. In other words, outside guests cannot purchase a ticket for themselves.

    The ticket price includes dinner, dancing, unlimited soft drinks, and photo booth! Cash or check is accepted. Please make checks payable to the University of Illinois at Chicago.

    General Student tickets are $50 each
    Faculty/staff tickets are $90 each

    Also, UIC Campus Housing is offering a $10 discount to the ticket price for Honors College Housing students! There are a limited number of these tickets available and you must purchase the ticket through Housing’s online system, click here: http://www.housing.uic.edu/dock.

    After signing up, the discounted cost of the ticket ($40) will be charged to your university account. Honors College Housing students who wish to bring a guest(s) may purchase additional tickets in-person at the Honors College at the $50 student rate.

    “(Artistic Director Robert Battle) has already put his stamp on the company, having essentially taken it into the 21st century,” says the Chicago Tribune.  Wheeldon.  Dove.  Naharin.  McGregor.  And of course – Ailey himself. Since Battle took over the company in 2011, these are just a few of the choreographers Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater has presented during their annual residency on our historic stage. The Auditorium Theatre has been Ailey’s Chicago home for over 46 years, and we are proud to present America’s Cultural Ambassador to the World."

    CHICAGO--ETA Creative Arts Foundation is proud to present Lines in the Dust, another Chicago Premiere by Pulitzer Prize nominated co-author, Nikkole Salter. When Denitra loses the charter school lottery for her daughter, she must find another way to escape from their underperforming neighborhood school. The answer seems like a risk well worth taking, but may end up requiring a bigger sacrifice than she ever could have imagined. It’s been over a half-century since Brown vs. The Board of Education. Lines in the Dust, questions how far we’ve come and more importantly, where we go from here.

    Why? This year marks the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, and Chicago is sponsoring a number of performances of his plays to celebrate The Bard’s life and work. Richard III begins with the famous line, “Now is the winter of our discontent,” and traces the Machiavellian Richard’s rise to power and his very short reign as King of England.

    All first-year students will be assigned a Faculty Fellow by the summer after your freshman year.  Come to this interactive workshop to learn more about the role of a Faculty Fellow, tips for communicating and building a relationship with your Fellow, and other advice and strategies for building a strong relationship with your Fellow. This workshop is designed primarily for first-year students and students who are new to the Honors College, but any Honors College student is welcome to attend.

    Fall course registration is coming up in April. It is also a good time to start thinking about Honors Activities for next year. Do you know about all of your options? Confused on if an activity you’re planning could be an Honors Activity?

    To help you navigate this process the Honors Ambassadors will be hosting information sessions to learn about all of the opportunities and to hear what others have done. While these sessions are targeted at first year students, all Honors College students are welcome to attend. Sessions will be held in 121 BH at the following times:

Brazilian native and Capoeira Master, Mestre Calango, and Dr. Lindsay will lead a fun and exciting introductory class that will cover the basic movements, history, and music.   • UIC Open House Volunteers Needed on Sat. 9/24

    The annual UIC Open House event will be on Saturday, 9/24, when thousands of prospective students and families come to campus.  Most campus buildings (including the Honors College) are open and there are presentations and demonstrations happening throughout the day.  It’s a fun event!

    We are in need of student volunteers for the event to talk with prospective students and families about UIC, the Honors College, and your experience here.
