  • Rangel Summer Enrichment Program in international affairs, Apply by Wed. 2/4

    The Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Summer Enrichment Program is a six-week summer program designed to provide undergraduate students with a deeper appreciation of current issues and trends in international affairs, a greater understanding of career opportunities in international affairs, and the enhanced knowledge and skills to pursue such careers. The Program usually selects 15-20 participants (known as “Rangel Scholars”) each year from universities throughout the United States. Students live at Howard University, attend classes, and participate in a variety of programs with foreign affairs professionals at Howard and at diverse locations around Washington, DC.

    The Program has two major components. First, in order to enhance participants' academic preparation to work in international affairs, the Program provides two courses and a seminar that focus on enhancing knowledge and skills related to U.S. foreign policy, economics and writing. In addition, in order to provide greater insight into the foreign policy-making process and international affairs careers, the Rangel Program introduces the participants to a wide range of government and non-government professionals who work on global issues and also arranges visits to various institutions involved in international affairs. The Program also helps students explore graduate school, scholarship, fellowship, internship, and professional options in international affairs.

    The Program covers the costs for tuition, travel, housing, and two meals per day. It also provides a stipend of $3,200. 

    The tentative dates for the 2015 Summer Enrichment Program are June 22 -August 2, 2015.

  • Regenerative Medicine Summer School at the University of Pittsburgh, Apply by Sun. 3/15

    The McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh announces its Second Annual Regenerative Medicine Summer School June 1 – 5, 2015.  

    The program is designed to provide a week-long didactic and experiential learning experience addressing the science and engineering related to the multidisciplinary field of regenerative medicine.  The program targets undergraduates enrolled in a science or engineering program, who will have completed their 3rd year of study. Exceptional candidates who will have completed their 2nd year of undergraduate study will also be considered.   • Summer Internships Available at Simmons Cancer Institute at SIU, Apply by Fri. 3/13

    College students interested in a career in medicine or cancer research are invited to apply for one of four internships at Simmons Cancer Institute (SCI) at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. Interns will have the opportunity to learn laboratory and critical thinking skills while immersed in research labs under the supervision of SCI faculty members.

    Three intern positions are located at the School of Medicine campus in Springfield. The fourth position is located at the SIU Carbondale campus.

    “The internships provide successful candidates with daily hands-on experience in our active cancer research labs and hopefully will further strengthen their interests in biomedical research and medicine, including cancer research,” said Dr. Donald S. Torry, professor and chair of the Department of Medical Microbiology, Immunology and Cell Biology.

    Qualified individuals will have completed their freshman year of college by June 2015 and not have graduated from college prior to June 2015.

    Applicants should submit a current college transcript, a résumé and two letters of reference from instructors, along with a personal statement letter describing current studies, activities and future goals. The paid internships are awarded on a competitive basis.

  • Boricua Scholarship for Artist Cooperative Residency and Exhibitions Project, Due Fri. 3/13

    ACRE (Artists’ Cooperative Residency and Exhibitions) is a volunteer-run non-profit based in Chicago devoted to employing various systems of support for emerging artists and to creating a generative community of cultural producers. ACRE investigates and institutes models designed to help artists develop, present, and discuss their practices by providing forums for idea exchange, interdisciplinary collaboration, and experimental projects.

    ACRE’s residency takes place each year outside of rural Steuben, Wisconsin. There, several dozen emerging artists from all over the US join a staff of dedicated volunteers and visiting luminaries. The residency is a time to meet and form collaborations with like-minded peers, make work, learn new skills, and discuss ideas with a group of dedicated, talented makers.  Please find tons of logistical information about the residency in this section, and specific information on how to apply in the application section.

    A variety of scholarships are available. Artist Cooperative Residency and Exhibitions Project (ACRE) is overjoyed to announce The Boricua Scholarship, a recent scholarship addition designed to strengthen our ongoing commitment to diversity in all aspects of the organization. The Boricua Scholarship will enable an artist of Puerto Rican descent to attend the ACRE Residency free of charge. This includes food and lodging for the two-week residency period, as well as access to the myriad facilities and artist community enjoyed by ACRE Residents.

  • HBO Access Writing Fellowship, Application Opens Wed. 3/4

    HBO has announced the launch of the HBOAccess Writing Fellowship which will begin accepting applications on March 4, 2015. The program will give emerging writers from diverse backgrounds an opportunity to attend a week of master classes held at the HBO campus in Santa Monica, California focusing on character and story development, pitching ideas and projects, securing an agent, and networking. Each participant will then enter into an 8-month writing phase where he/she will be paired with an HBO development executive and guided through the script development process. At the conclusion of the program, HBO will hold a reception and staged reading for industry professionals where the writers will be introduced to the entertainment industry.

  • "America Needs You” Fellowship Program for first-generation college freshmen, Apply by Tues. 3/31

    Career Services and the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Affairs has been working with America Needs You (ANY), a fellowship program for first generation college freshmen.  The fellowship offers students a mentor coach, professional development grants, and access to prestigious companies in Chicago.    On March 31st, ANY will be hosting professionals from various industries at a career panel from 3:30-4:30 p.m. at Student Center East.  Encourage interested students to attend as this should be an excellent networking opportunity.

    Keynote Lecture: "Women Living with HIV," featuring Monica Gandhi, MD, MPH,Professor of Medicine in the Division of HIV/AIDS,University of California, San Francisco Monica Gandhi MD, MPH is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of HIV/AIDS at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and the Medical Director of the HIV/AIDS Clinic ("Ward 86") at San Francisco General Hospital. Past research efforts focused on HIV/AIDS in U.S. women through the Women's Interagency HIV Study (WIHS), a multisite, prospective cohort study established in 1994 to study the natural history, clinical and laboratory findings of HIV in women. Currently, she is investigating low-cost solutions to measuring antiretroviral levels in resource-poor settings, such as determining drug levels in hair samples. Dr. Gandhi also leads multiple HIV education and mentorship programs at UCSF. She is the principal investigator of an R24 mentoring grant from the NIH focused on nurturing early career investigators of diversity in HIV research and the Associate Director for the Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) Mentoring Program.

    NOTE: There are many graduate and professional programs, and it is important that you find the program that is the right fit for you.  This is one program that might spark the interest of some students, but there are also other programs with similar deadlines as well.  You should explore and consider all of your options and speak with trusted faculty and advisors for guidance on selecting a graduate program that is the right fit for you.

    Masters in Psychology Program at University of Northern Iowa:

    Do you have any students who are looking for a Masters program to help prepare them for a PhD? The University of Northern Iowa has a strong, empirically-based, thesis-required masters in psychology with emphases in clinical science and social psychology, as well as an individualized study option. We offer a small faculty-student ratio, strong faculty mentorship, and new and updated lab facilities and equipment. Our students have a good track record of getting into PhD programs in clinical, counseling, social, and other areas of psychology.     Going abroad….The British scholarships, Fulbright Fellowships and other post graduate opportunities can offer you the chance to realize your dreams abroad! If you are interested in going abroad in fall 2016, start asking questions and exploring your options now. 

    The British scholarships include the Rhodes, Marshall, Gates Cambridge and Mitchell. These awards give you the opportunity to study at a British university for 1-4 years. Strong candidates typically have a 3.7 GPA or higher, a record of service and leadership, and strong academic qualifications for what they are proposing to study in the UK. The British scholarships have a campus deadline of April 30. 

    Post-graduate opportunities…Fulbright offers the opportunity to teach or do research/study abroad. There is no GPA cutoff. Other opportunities such as the NSF Graduate Fellowship, JET program for teaching English in Japan or Illinois Legislative Internship provide myriad opportunities for post-baccalaureate education and growth. Join us at one of the following sessions to learn more about these opportunities.

  • LAS Pre-Health Advisory Board, Apply by Wed. 4/15

    Do you want to be the voice of your fellow students on issues that matter to you? Are you interested in taking an active role in LAS, pre-health advising and helping to create health-related resources?

    The LAS Pre-Health Advising office is interested in hearing your input, opinions, and recommendations, and you are encouraged to apply to become part of the LAS Pre-Health Advisory Board.

    The LAS Pre-Health Advisory Board provides a student voice to the Student Affairs office and pre-health advisors on all issues affecting your experience within LAS, specifically pertaining to your health-related educational and/or career goals. The board is open to all undergraduate students in LAS who plan to attend UIC for the 2015-2016 school year. Students in all majors are encouraged to apply. Applications from transfer students, commuter students, and students who live on campus are welcome.

    The group typically meets two or three times per semester to discuss specific topics of interest. Members of the group also have the opportunity to serve as paid ambassadors of the College at a variety of events (new student welcome reception and recruiting events, etc.)

    If you are interested, fill out the application by noon on Wednesday, April 15th. You will be asked to log in with your UIC Net ID and password. Selected students will be contacted by April 22nd, 2015. One meeting will be planned before the end of the semester. Two meetings times will be held the week of April 27th.  Students need only attend one meeting.

    The Society of Future Physicians, along with the Honors College, are pleased to be hosting a lecture presented by Dr. Dimitri Azar, Dean of the UIC College of Medicine. Dr. Azar is an internationally recognized ophthalmic surgeon who brings experience in administration, research, education and clinical practice to his position as Dean of the College of Medicine at University of Illinois. With his outstanding leadership, Dean Azar has overseen the education of hundreds of medical professionals and helped keep UIC as a leader in medical education. Dean Azar will be speaking on a variety of topics ranging from admissions to residency programs. Questions for the Dean may be submitted along with the RSVP.

  • Open Society Youth Fellowship for young activists and organizers, Apply by 5/15

    The Open Society Youth Fellowship supports young activists and organizers as thought leaders and allies in crafting solutions and new youth-focused approaches to open society challenges.

    Youth Fellows should take advantage of the considerable intellectual and logistical resources of the Open Society Foundations and expect to contribute meaningfully to the Foundations’ thinking in return. While fellows will work outside of Open Society Foundations core offices, they will liaise with the Open Society Youth Exchange to identify opportunities for both in-person and virtual engagement with Open Society staff and partners. The Youth Exchange will work with each individual fellow to identify additional opportunities for the fellow to learn from and collaborate with staff and partners through site visits, speaking engagements, and other fora.

    Fellows may produce a variety of work products, including publications, such as reports and blog posts; infographics and other visual content; innovative education and training resources and tools; the launch of new campaigns and organizations; and creation of artistic or cultural expression projects. They may also engage in activities such as hosting panel discussions, traveling to conferences, and presenting on their work in other public spaces.

    The Chancellor's Committee on the Status of Persons with Disabilities (CCSPD) is seeking new members for the upcoming academic year August 2015 to July 2016. Our Mission is to promote empowerment and inclusion of students, faculty and staff with disabilities at UIC. The Committee recognizes that people with disabilities are a diverse group, including individuals with visible and non-visible disabilities.

    The CCSPD provides a forum for discussion and assessment of disability-related issues that are relevant for the campus and the larger community. In addition, the CCSPD advises the Chancellor and other administrative units and makes recommendations on disability-related issues, policies, services, attitudes and practices on campus. This mission is motivated by the belief that people with disabilities are assets to the university.

  • Policy Fellowship Position with the National Head Start Association

    The National Head Start Association is looking to fill a Policy Fellowship position. The Policy Fellowship is a year-long, paid position as part of a dynamic team working on policy and advocacy on behalf of Head Start. The Fellow will have the opportunity to develop skills using data and research to educate policymakers, support practitioners, and engage in a national conversation about the value of early learning. The Fellow will work with oversight and guidance from the Executive Director, Senior Director for External Affairs, and Director of Policy, Data, and Research. 

    The ideal candidate is a recent BA or MA grad with demonstrated interest in early childhood and the populations served by Head Start and strong analysis and writing skills.

  • Internship: Society for Research in Child Development

    SRCD's DC Office Looking for Advanced Undergraduate Intern for Summer 2015!

    About SRCD: SRCD is a multidisciplinary, not-for-profit, professional association with a membership of approximately 6,000 researchers, practitioners, and child development professionals from over 50 countries. It was established in 1933 by the National Research Council of the National Academy of Sciences. The Society’s goals are to promote multidisciplinary research in the field of child development, foster the exchange of information among scientists and other professionals in various disciplines, and encourage applications of research findings to improve the lives of children and families. SRCD publishes the premier journal in the field, Child Development, as well as Child Development Perspectives, Monographs of the Society for Research in Child Development, and the Social Policy Report. The internship will be hosted by SRCD’s Office for Policy and Communications, which is located in Washington, DC.

    Intern Responsibilities: The SRCD Policy Intern would assist staff with a number of projects, including helping with these projects: Preparation of Policy Update, a monthly e-newsletter sent to SRCD members focusing on federal policy developments related to children and families

    Coordination of activities for the University-Based Child and Family Policy Consortium (a collaboration of approximately 35 universities with child and family policy programs) including contributing to the preparation of a quarterly e-newsletter and assisting in conducting and summarizing a survey of program directors to help identify priorities for the consortium

    Preparation of a summary of career- and training-related resources (that have already been gathered) for graduate students and early career scholars interested in careers focusing on policy-related child development research

    Conducting and summarizing the results of a survey focusing on opportunities and training needs of graduate students and early career scholars interested in policy-related child development research

    Qualifications: The SRCD office in Washington is recruiting an advanced undergraduate student who has had coursework related to child development and public policy. This person will need strong interpersonal, time management and research skills and must demonstrate computer proficiency in Microsoft Office applications. He/she will also need to be both flexible and proactive in his/her approach to work, and comfortable working independently and collaboratively within a small office environment. The ideal candidate will have had experience in conducting research, including developing and collecting data from questionnaires or surveys; coursework in research design and methodology; and some experience with data analysis.

    Compensation: The SRCD Policy Intern would be paid $12/hour. The internship entails 16 hours of paid work each week. The intern’s work schedule would be flexible and would be developed in conjunction with SRCD staff to accommodate his/her other summer commitments.

  • US Hispanic Leadership Institute Summer Internship Program, Apply by Fri. 5/15

    The United States Hispanic Leadership Institute (USHLI) is looking to hire ten interns for their paid summer internship program. The 21st Century Leaders Summer Internship Program is a ten week program that promotes grassroots community organizing and leadership development in key impact areas.

    The student dedicates ten (10) weeks to reaching his/her goal of registering 1000 new or restored voters. The student must also continue to maintain contact with his/her supervisor at least once a week.

    The internship requires a mandatory training in Chicago, Illinois, May 29-30, 2015. The internship program will officially begin June 1, 2015 and concludes August 7, 2015.   • Paid Locator/Interviewer Position for University of California study

    Locator/Interviewer Needed for Chicago Area:  University of California

    The Department of Psychology at the University of California is conducting an important longitudinal project with adults located in the Chicago area. We seek to hire students on a limited part-time basis (approximately 5 hours a month) to locate participants and/or conduct in-person interviews.  Delivering and sending questionnaires and project materials to participants and close communication with us will also be needed.

    The students must be friendly, highly responsible, and persistent; have a car; be willing to go to participants’ residences throughout Chicago and the suburbs; and have flexible schedules. Maintaining confidentiality of participant information is essential. Experience and/or classwork in clinical psychology, social work, urban studies, race relations, poverty, or the like would be helpful.

    The SISE Program

    The Summer Institute on Sustainability and Energy (SISE) is a two-week intensive workshop and lecture series for students and professionals.  From August 6-18, a diverse body of participants will engage a broad spectrum of energy and sustainability-related topics through daily presentations, collaborative projects, mentoring activities, site visits, and networking opportunities with leading research institutions and companies in the digital technology and energy sectors. The issues presented will be of interest to scientists, economists, political scientists, urban planners, engineers, architects, and entrepreneurs. Graduates leave as thoughtful and informed global citizens with a firm foundation and expanded network for careers in sustainability, energy, and smart technology and infrastructure.

     

    2015 Theme: Digital Rebirth

    Digital technology now allows us to capture the dynamics of entire systems, from manufacturing lines to the electricity grid to the flow of people, cars, water, and waste. Given the need to service concentrated population clusters, cities in particular can take advantage of digital technology and the Internet of Things to improve systems delivering energy, water, and transportation. Yet this requires addressing such challenges as retrofitting or replacing aging infrastructure, data collection and management, privacy issues, cybersecurity risks, and the formation of new business and financing models.

     

    SISE will 1) explore the crossroads of digital manufacturing, smart cities, and energy; 2) dive deep into specific applications such as smart grid and the connected vehicle; and 3) theorize how these innovations can usher in a more sustainable future. Topics will revolve around integration; sourcing and use of supply; reduction of waste; energy and resource demands; big data collection and use; anticipation, reaction, and adaptation to the unexpected; and sensors, connectivity, and cybersecurity.

     

     

    Now Accepting Applications

    Admission into the program is highly competitive, drawing from a national pool of applicants. Applicants accepted into the program can expect to receive lodging support for the duration of the 2-week program and some meals on weekdays. Many will receive partial support for travel costs.

     

    Senior-level undergraduates (as of the fall of 2014), graduate students, and professionals working in the fields of sustainability and energy who are living, working, or studying in the United States are eligible to apply.   • POV Hackathon 9, Apply by Fri. 7/10

    Since 2012, POV Hackathon has provided matchmaking and mentorship for visionary filmmakers and inventive technologists to "re-imagine the documentary for web" in a single weekend.

    POV Hackathon 9 will take place in Chicago the weekend of August 15-16, 2015, in partnership with Kartemquin Films, a collaborative center for documentary media makers who seek to foster a more engaged and empowered society, and The Chicago Innovation Exchange, the University of Chicago's new center to help scholars and entrepreneurs translate their ideas and new technologies into start-up businesses and products.

    Expect to be busy from the Saturday morning through Sunday evening. Hacking concludes on Sunday afternoon, but there will be a screening on Sunday evening, followed by a reception. All events take place at The Chicago Innovation Exchange, 1452 E 53rd Street Chicago, IL 60615.

There is one form for applicants proposing POV Hackathon project ideas (usually "media makers" - filmmakers, journalists, visual artists, etc.) and a second form for applicants not proposing ideas but who want to join a team (usually "technologists" - developers, designers, etc.).     Tickets for the public screening of POV Hackathon 9 projects are now available! The screening will take place at The Chicago Innovation Exchange, 1452 E 53rd Street Chicago, IL 60615 on Sunday, August 16, 2015, at 7 pm. Tickets are free, but space is limited, so you must RSVP to attend.

  • Literary Translator Mentorship Opportunities, Apply by 7/1

    The American Literary Translators Association

    Emerging Translator Mentorships

    The ALTA Mentorship Program is designed to facilitate and establish a close working relationship between an experienced translator and an emerging translator on a project selected by the emerging translator. The mentorship duration is one year, and the emerging translator is expected to choose a project that can be completed in a year’s time and will only be advised on that particular project.

    Applications will be accepted from June 1 - July 1, 2015. The selected mentees will be announced in August.

    2015-2016 Mentorships are available working from the following languages:

    - Catalan (prose or poetry), with mentor Ronald Puppo

    - French (prose only), with mentor Alyson Waters

    - Polish (prose or poetry), with mentor Bill Johnston

    Applications must be submitted online through our submission platform, and must include:

    CV A project proposal of no more than 1000 words. Projects must be reasonably expected to be completed within the scope of the 1-year mentorship. Proposals should include information about the original author and importance of the source text, as well as how the emerging translator would benefit from mentorship. A sample translation of up to 10 pages double spaced (prose or poetry), along with the corresponding source text.

    The programme is intended for Anglophone literary translators with promise rather than experience, who are at a stage in their professional careers when they would benefit from the opportunity to work closely with an experienced mentor over a six month period.
