Position Summary
The Staff Nurse I demonstrates advanced nursing techniques in the provision of direct patient care, participates in a wide variety of operational and/or daily activities in the clinic and provides leadership within the patient care team. Working under the direction of a provider. Primary responsibilities include triage, patient care management/coordination, documentation, and quality improvement.
Duties & Responsibilities
Administers and/or coordinates skilled patient care. Rooms patients and preps for provider. Takes vitals and alerts provider of abnormal/irregular results. Obtains specimens for diagnostic testing including urine, blood and POCTs. Assists the provider with therapeutics or diagnostic procedures including, PFT’s, pulse oximetry, gentian violet treatments, suture removals and dressing changes. Prepares and administers oral medications and intramuscular, subcutaneous, and intradermal injections including vaccines and antibiotics. Initiates emergency measures for any adverse reaction and reports patient’s condition to provider. Provides direct patient care in the event of medical emergencies. Educates patients and families in components of Pediatric health care related to specific disease entities. Ensures coordination of patient care among staff. Documents patient visit information in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
Schedules various tests, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, and hospital admissions. Pre-certifies diagnostic or therapeutic procedures with insurance companies. Coordinates patient referrals to other physicians or outside services. Triages incoming patient calls, assesses symptoms, provides patient guidance and/or consults with the provider when necessary. Documents patient triage information in the EMR. Monitors tests and procedures entered into the electronic medical record. Provides results and patient direction when appropriate. Follows established standing orders to refill prescriptions or order medication blood levels for symptomatic patients.
Identifies and reports policy and procedural deficiencies and recommends changes. Reinforces and explains departmental and unit policies and procedures to staff and patients. Evaluates new policies and procedures and provides feedback. Models skilled nursing techniques and encourages patient care team members in their roles and development. Directs and supervises Licensed Practical Nurses, Medical Assistants (Certified/Credentialed) and Medical Office Associates. Mentors and provides feedback to Licensed Practical Nurses, Medical Assistants (Certified/Credentialed) and Medical Office Associates. Assists in the training of new and existing staff. Provides performance feedback to supervisor as necessary. Maintains good working relationships with the physicians, hospitals, patients, families, outside agencies and fellow staff members, presenting in a positive and professional manner.
Performs other duties as assigned. Occasionally covers for other Staff Nurse I’s and Administrative Nurses who may be absent or out of the office. Ensures closing procedures are followed, rooms are cleaned and stocked, and supplies are ordered at the end of the day.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications
- Eligibility for licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Division of Professional Regulation.
- Current AHA BLS/CPR and other required unit specific certifications
- Effective communication skills (oral and written) that facilitate therapeutic relationships between patients, family, and health care providers
- Intermediate computer skills with the ability to become proficient in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) with on-the-job training
- Excellent attendance, interpersonal skills and work history required.
