Job Description
Summer 2023 Nurse Extern Program
In conjunction with the University of Chicago Medicine’s mission to provide superior health care, the mission of the Nurse Extern Program is to provide exceptional professional development for students completing their last year in a BSN or a direct entry MSN program. The focus for the nurse externship program will include Adult and Pediatric In-Patient Units, including medical/surgical, ICU, and Emergency Departments.
In this 10-week summer intensive program, students will be matched with one area for the duration of the Nurse Externship program.
We are looking for candidates that have a passion to work for UChicago! Following the summer externship, there will be an opportunity to continue to work during your last year of school. The schedule will be flexible to work with your school schedule.

Zoom Interviews will be scheduled between February 27th - March 10th, 2023.
The formal Nurse Extern program will start Monday, June 12th, 2023 – August 19, 2023
Required Qualifications
- BLS (CPR)
- Request 2 professional reference letters prior to interview - one letter is required from a nursing instructor
- Copy of most recent transcript
- GPA of 3.0 or higher required
- 250-word essay on “What being a nurse means to you?” and “How this program will help you achieve your future goals as a nurse?”
- Be enrolled full time in an accredited BSN program or direct entry MSN program
- Be entering the final year of a BSN or direct entry MSN program with graduation expected by spring of the following year

Nurse Externship Details
- Candidates need to be available for 3, 12-hour shifts for the full duration of the 10-week program
- Positions will include both day and night shift opportunities
- Candidates will be expected to work some weekends

Must comply with UCMC’s COVID-19 Vaccination requirement as a condition of employment. If you have already received the vaccination, you must provide proof as part of the pre-employment process.
