Overview
The Director of the Northeast IL Area Health Education Center (AHEC) at Northern Illinois University provides visionary, mission-oriented leadership that supports the AHEC goals and related College of Health and Human Sciences (CHHS) priorities of enhancing student engagement, recruitment and retention; prioritizing accessibility, equity and inclusivity; and bolstering interprofessional practice and education to expand a qualified and diverse healthcare workforce. The Director is responsible for supervising and guiding staff; recruiting collaborators; and developing, enhancing, and implementing related programs and services, including generating and sustaining supportive linkages for these initiatives. This position serves on the CHHS Directors team with the Pre-Health Director and Advising Director and reports to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs or designee. This teams primary focus is student recruitment, retention, and engagement.
Position Summary
To provide visionary, mission oriented and leadership to enable fulfillment of the essential functions of the College of Health and Human Sciences (CHHS); to direct, supervise and guide staff, to recruit collaborators, and to generate and sustain supportive linkages for programs and services provided/implemented by CHHS. Reports to the Dean or Dean's designee.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Relationship Building
- Serve as the primary liaison and external representative with organizations, agencies and public officials including the University of Illinois College of Medicine - Rockford and Chicago, the federal Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) office, the National AHEC organization, Illinois Rural Health Association, and local and state health and education organizations.
- Establish relationships that support the development and implementation of pipeline programs, i.e., healthcare summer camps and community college articulations.
- Recruit membership and oversee the NE IL AHEC community advisory board.
Illinois AHEC Network Collaboration
- Coordinate public relations efforts.
- Plan and develop programs with the Illinois AHEC Network.
- Support the development of quarterly newsletters.
- Support the implementation of rural and urban health experiences, including job shadowing.
Local Student and Practitioner Programming
- Expand and enhance programs supporting student engagement, including the IL AHEC Scholars program.
- Provide continuing education offerings.
- Oversee the call for, awarding and implementation of opportunity grants.
Staff Oversight and Project Compliance
- Ensure that the responsibilities, authorities, and accountability of all staff are defined and understood.
- Provide procedures, systems, and direction necessary for staff to maintain proper records.
- Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
- Ensure that all activities and operations within the scope of this position are carried out in compliance with local, state and federal regulations and laws governing business operations.
Grant Management
- Monitor tracking and reporting of outcomes through monthly reports and related data collection.
- Research, coordinate and support preparation of proposals and grant applications to provide funding for new and/or continuing operations.
- Support review of grant budgets, annual operating and monthly finance reports; approve purchases and expenditures; and ensure that operations are consistent with approved budgets.
Other Duties as Assigned
- These duties would leverage the unique skill set of the director to support College-wide priority.
Minimum Required Qualifications (Civil Service)
Master's degree (M.A. or M.S. M.Sed) in health administration, health care, health promotion, public health, education or related field AND two (2) years leadership experience in a non-for-profit environment.
