Asthma Educator (RN)
The Asthma Educator (RN) oversees planning, development and operations of the Asthma Education Program at Lurie Children’s. The Asthma Educator promotes and facilitates optimal care with a diverse group of individuals including patients, families, physicians, nurses, students, process improvement department and community organizations.

Min Quals:
- RN, BSN required
- MSN preferred
- 2+ years RN inpatient experience strongly preferred. 3+ years pediatric experience with allergy/pulmonary patients preferred.
- Certified Asthma Educator or willingness to obtain within 1 year of employment.
- Experience teaching patients/families.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Highly motivated and creative with solid problem-solving skills. Ability to perform literature review and data collection.
- PALS and ACLS certification preferred.
- CPR Instructor (or within six months of employment).
- MS word and MS excel experience desired.
Job Responsibilities:
- Coordinates, facilitates, and performs the education of all patients requiring asthma education in the inpatient setting consistent with the National Heart, Lung, Blood Institute’s standards, goals, and performance expectations.
- Documents patient assessment, education, and interventions appropriately.
- Participates in the development, implementation and ongoing assessment of policies, procedures, and Clinical Care guidelines that define the education of the patient with asthma to assure compliance with standards established by Lurie Children’s, Joint Commission, National Heart, Lung, Blood Institute and other regulatory agencies.
- Assesses community needs for asthma education; plans and coordinates cost effective education programs.
- Establishes and maintain an effective working relationship with members of the interdisciplinary team.
- Participates in multidisciplinary rounds and Allergy/Respiratory meetings.
- Enhances professional development through participation in seminars, workshops, professional affiliations and educational programs to keep abreast of current trends related asthma education and management.
- Facilitates and collaborates with all members of the team in identifying and participating in asthma research projects and incorporates findings in clinical practice.
- Performs job functions adhering to service principles with customer service focus of innovation, service excellence and teamwork to provide the highest quality care and service to our patients, families, co-workers and others.
- Monitors Asthma Clinical Care Guideline (CCG) utilization providing staff and provider follow up.
