Basic Function:
Provides professional nursing care for Kent State University students; provides health education and emergency treatment when necessary. Reports to Nursing Manager or other designated health care professional.
Examples of Duties:
Duties/essential functions may include, but not be limited to, the following:
Performs patient assessments (e.g., obtains and documents patient health history, records vital signs and symptoms and notes changes, makes observations and draws logical conclusions, identifies abnormal diagnostic data and reports information to physician); makes nursing diagnosis.
Develops, provides, and monitors plan of nursing care; provides professional nursing care (e.g., administers medication and treatments ordered by physician, applies and changes sterile dressings, provides eye and ear irrigations, administers injections, performs spirometry testing etc.); prepares patients for medical/surgical procedures; provides emergency treatment and first aid as needed; provides patient education regarding health care and responds to patient inquiries.
Documents/charts patient treatment, medications administered, vital signs, nursing care provided, etc.
Informs patients of laboratory results and explains medication procedures.
Assists physician with office examinations and medical/surgical procedures (e.g., screens patients, performs hearing and vision tests, IV insertion).
May order supplies and equipment; may serve on in-house committees.
May direct the work activities of Licensed Practical Nurses, Nurse Aides/Assistants, and/or other classified, student, or temporary employees assisting with patient care and related activities; trains or orients new employees, assigns selected work duties, and monitors work performed.
Performs related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing. A minimum of one year patient care experience as a registered nurse in a hospital or health care facility.
License/Certification:
Current license as registered nurse in Ohio. Current certification in CPR or must successfully complete training course and be certified during employee's probationary period.
Knowledge Of:
Nursing practices and procedures
Pharmacology
First aid
Skill In:
Providing professional nursing care to physically and mentally ill and injured
Interpersonal communication to effectively interact with University personnel and public in person and over the telephone (e.g., to contact outside health services to exchange information)
Written technical/medical communication (e.g., to compose meaningful, concise and accurate reports on patient treatment)
Ability To:
Recognize symptoms and take appropriate action
Gather, collate and classify information
Train and provide effective work direction to other employees, to manage time effectively and set priorities, to carry out or assist in implementing changes, if supervising required by position
Demonstrate physical dexterity and lift 50 pounds
Operate a computer for data entry/retrieval as well as learn and proficiently use Electronic Health Records
Preferred Qualifications - if applicable:
Immunization experience preferred.
