UIC College of Nursing INSPIRE program
OVERVIEW
Goal: Our goal is to expand, strengthen and diversify the healthcare nursing workforce to meet the needs of the underserved populations in rural and inner-city urban areas. The INSPIRE program is designed to provide a rich learning experience for diverse nursing students with mentoring and guidance by faculty and peer tutoring support. At the heart of this course is active, experiential learning in clinical settings and telehealth with discussion and reflection on the unique qualities and needs of diverse underserved adults. The teaching and learning focus on how nursing students can optimize the health, well-being and quality of life of diverse adults in underserved areas.
Learners: Diverse Nursing Students enrolled in the BSN, RN-BSN, Graduate Entry and graduate programs from the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Nursing at all campuses are eligible to apply.
Program Dates: The INSPIRE program will enroll students for the Integrated Diverse Training Program beginning in Fall 2021 semester and continue through Spring 2025. The course will include online didactic education modules, telehealth training, clinical placements with underserved patients. Students will participate in Workshop trainings, online training modules and receive Faculty Mentoring and Peer Tutoring.
Expectations and Time Commitment: Students will complete one online learning modules (30 minutes) per semester, will attend a program Workshop each semester, and will participate in telehealth training receiving a Certificate in Telehealth from the American Board of Telehealth. Student clinical placements will include assigned diverse underserved patients. Additional time will be spent with assigned Faculty Mentor and Peer Tutors and is determined by the Mentors, Tutors and student. Please note that after each semester students will be asked to complete an online evaluation survey of the course. Completing the session evaluations is an INSPIRE course requirement.
Learning Activities: Culturally aligned learning experiences will include (1) didactic training by online learning modules (1 per semester, 30 minutes each) and (2) experiential learning. The experiential learning includes telehealth training and student’s clinical placement assignments will be in underserved settings or with diverse patients. Students will attend INSPIRE Workshops each quarter. Together, the didactic and experiential learning components address the culturally aligned care of underserved adults, including the trajectory of illness, at different levels and transitions of care.
Scholarship: minimum of $6,000 will be awarded to each student who successfully completes each year in the program.
Eligibility Criteria: UIC diverse BSN, RN-BSN, Graduate Entry and graduate students at the Chicago (urban) and Springfield (rural) and Urbana-Champaign (rural) campuses who are enrolled in the UIC nursing program are eligible to apply.
Application & Selection Process & Dates:
This is a four-year program with admission in the fall of each year (2021, 2022, 2023, 2024)

Current HRSA Federal Grant scholarship restrictions for INSPIRE Students include:
- If a student receives federal loans, the stipend may be applied to his/her student loan instead of being disbursed directly to the
- Scholarships will pay tuition and fees after student waivers or grants are applied, including employee waivers, MAP grants, etc.
- Students cannot have more tuition and fee specific aid than what they are charged for in tuition and fees.
- Stipends will be disbursed into students’ UIC accounts, not directly disbursed to students. To learn more please visit https://financialaid.uic.edu/
- If a student is a Foreign National, existing federal HRSA grant restrictions do not allow stipend payments; however, students are able to participate in the program without receiving the stipend.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Scholars who are selected and agree to participate in the INSPIRE program will be required to fulfill their commitment and Learning Agreement. Declining to participate in the program after acceptance creates substantial logistic challenges for the organizers and also takes away the scholarship opportunity from other potential candidates.
Attendance: Students will be asked to participate in all scheduled course activities. The course scheduled activities are based on student and faculty availability and are subject to change. Absences will be excused only for health and other serious reasons.
Course Evaluations: Please note that after each semester students will be asked to complete an evaluation survey of the program. Completing the session evaluations is a requirement of the INSPIRE Program. Please consider applying for this scholarship only if you are able to comply with the above program requirements.
